एंथोनी गोंसाल्वेस ने जहाँ हिंदी फ़िल्मों में म्यूजिक अर्रेंजमेन्ट सिस्टम की शुरुआत की उसे डेवेलप किया वहीं उसे और आगे बढ़ाया सेबेस्टियन ने। बहुत से फ़िल्म म्यूजिक हिस्टोरियन मानते हैं कि उनमें वेस्टर्न ऑर्केस्ट्रा को भारतीय ऑर्केस्ट्रा के साथ संयोजित करने की अद्भुत क्षमता थी। पर हिंदी फ़िल्म संगीत में उनका सबसे बड़ा योगदान माना जाता है काउंटर मेलोडी की रचना करना, हार्मोनी बनाना। उनसे पहले फ़िल्मों में काउंटर मेलोडी का चलन नहीं था और जब सेबेस्टियन ने ये चलन शुरु किया तो वो बहुत से संगीतकारों के फ़ेवरेट हो गए।

Counter melody was introduced by Pankaj Mullick in dharati mata duniya rang rangili song. So was western instruments in Indian music were introduced by him and R. C. Boral, so was western tunes in Hindi songs by Pankaj Mullick. Naushad, Lata mangeshkar have already said so at various platforms this in documentaries on Indian film music/Shraddhanjali series she released. Interlude music also introduced by these 2 great music directors. They did all orchestration themselves, those days there was no music arranger system! They should be given due credit for their contribution. As for C. H. Atma's Pritam aan milo, music was supervised by Pankaj Mullick! Check old version 78 RPM record, clearly mentioned so on the label!

Right. In that Era almost all prelude and interlude were being composed by the music directors themselves. Especially S. J. However, some lead pieces were composed by Sebastian. But, credit of counter melodies and obligato completely goes to Sebastian D'Souza, which used to be out of the world.

Sebastian ji was not just an music arranger, he used to write the musical notes for the musicians. They were grammatically trained musicians and could replicate the notes. It goes without saying that the music composers would first have a sitting with the producer/ director along and try basic tune. Then practice with the singer/ s by minimal instruments and the assistant. For the final rehearsal the entire cast of musicians, arranger/ assistant and the music composer come together. Another notable arranger was Frankie, assistant to Ravi.

Shree Sebastianji was undoubtedly a great music personality. He has a great authority on western classical music. Like Shree Dattaramji, he could have become independant music director in Hindi Cinema. His contribution to Hindi Cinema Sangeet is immense. Music director Shankarji n Jaikishanji were talented n both of them could play many musical instruments themselves. Shankarji had a great musical sense n also knowing classical dance steps. Sebastianji worked with many music directors, but he shone in the company of Shankar Jaikishan. The music of Street Singer was done by Shree Shankarji. The producer actor Shree Chandrashekhar was the friend of Shankarji from Hyderabad. In an interview, Shankarji said that the harmonium was played like accordion by Jaikishanji in the song " Aie Mere Dil Kahi Aur Chal".

Very good information indeed. I always thought that after the tune of the song was finalized, it was another important job to select different musical instruments to be played at appropriate time within the song. The sound of flute, sitar, group of violins, and sometimes harmonium played very crucial role in bringing up the mood of the song. I was not conversant with the role of music arranger. Like many others I thought that all these jobs were done by music director. Now I understand that I was wrong. Thanks for highlighting the role of music arranger in composing the final integrated music of the song.

Very nice video ! However - in song "Ae mere dil Kahin aur chal", it was not 'accordion' which was played but 'harmonium' played by famous composer, instrumentalist Pandit V Balsara, who used to play harmonium in accordion style ! Likewise , Pandit V Balsara Ji played his harmonium in accordion style in song " Chor gaye Balam" also and many other Shankar Jaikishan songs in the yester years, and which we still remember fondly till today !
