Non-fiction author Sebastian Junger left his mark on the genre in 1997 with "The Perfect Storm." He went on to become a war correspondent, and came close to death on the battlefield, but never had a near-death experience like he did just a few years ago. Now, that's the subject of his newest book, "In My Time of Dying." Jeff Glor has more.
"CBS Saturday Morning" co-hosts Jeff Glor, Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson deliver two hours of original reporting and breaking news, as well as profiles of leading figures in culture and the arts. Watch "CBS Saturday Morning" at 7 a.m. ET on CBS and 8 a.m. ET on the CBS News app.

@@bethanydee1920it’s a temptation to believe what you have stated. It it might be true. He states that he is “trying to find the sacred” in this experience. Like all of us he is a work in progress. Faith is a two sided coin, Faith and Doubt. Unfortunately he is more on the side of doubt. He is a work in progress. As Jesus said after the rich young ruler walked away dejected, “with God all things are possible.” Remember Jesus loved him.

@@JD-HatCreekCattleCo of course there's still hope for him. I was merely saying that if that astounding experience didn't cause him to set his mind & heart in a way where he's determined to start a definite process of seeking out the truth specifically about God then I don't know how many more times one might expect the Almighty to go to such an extreme measure to try and get that response. He still says he's an atheist even after all that which God himself provided. The scriptures say we're to "choose" God and at some point if we won't he'll give us over to a reprobate mind. Also I believe that time is of the essence now in what seems to many people to be the very last of the last days. God's already been calling us thru much thunder, lightning, earthquakes, etc and this man received a very personalized wake up call. I hope and pray he takes God up on his offer and soon.

I had a near death experience in the early 90s. I saw my brothers dog who had died 2 weeks before from drowning and I saw my grandparents who had died in the 70s. My brothers dog was now a puppy and my grandparents were in their 30s. And obviously I had never known my grandparents in their 30s nor had known my brother’s dog when he was a puppy. My brother and I have been estranged for decades. Thankfully 🙏🏻. As I was just talking with my grandmother, I felt a pull…through the tunnel and I heard my doctor say, “we have a pulse!” A dear friend of mine Vinney Todd Tolman wrote a book about his NDE ….a must read. He had been pronounced dead, zipped up in a body bag and then years later wrote a fascinating story about his NDE experience . “The Light After Death”

Former hospice nurse here, he is right, I've seen it a thousand times and I can't explain it. People who appear to be comatose come out of it when they say they see a family member or who are confused about everything but are reasonable and certain when speaking to invisible loved ones. And as frightening or supernatural it may seem to their living family who witness it, it is so comforting to the person dying, you can see it on their face. It's someone they love to help them cross over. I'm a science person too and I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it. It's not universal but like I said, I've seen it a thousand times, no exaggeration. I could tell so many stories of amazing things I can't explain.

I also want to say that I had my own experience with what you might call death or the afterlife. I don't tell this story often because I think people think I'm nuts or don't take me seriously. Keep in mind, I'm a former RN and I believe in rational, data driven science. I used DMT several years ago. A lot of people dismiss these experiences as brain chemicals and hallucinations but I'm here to tell you, what I saw was more real than anything I've ever experienced. I'm not a religious person, I didn't see God but I did see a beautiful "woman" (she was more than that but I don't want to go down that rabbit hole). She communicated with me directly, she didn't speak (I know it's a trope but I think sometimes tropes are tropes for a reason). My body had ceased to be and I wasn't quite a being but a small part of the universe that had always been and will always be. She explained to me how it all works, how lives work, I won't get into it because it's a lot and I feel like what she "said" was directly for me, like the message would be delivered to someone else in their own way so they could understand it in their bones. I no longer fear death. I live my life in a whole other way, still not spiritual, just free. I have peace of mind because I know the end is never the end. Take all that for what you will. Afternote: people ask me about DMT and if they should do it and my only answer is "are you ready to meet God today?" As a serious question. You have to actually be ready to meet whatever your version of God is going in, it's not for fun or recreation. And then you just have to let whatever happens in there happen.

@@loveoneanother77 as far as what it's like...my trip only lasted 20 minutes (I smoked it) but I felt like I was in there for hours. I've heard of people living a lifetime in there. I had a guide through the universe but the universe looked very different from how we picture it, crazy geometry, kaleidoscope vision, down to the quantum level and out to infinity. An extreme feeling of peace and understanding and certainty. That's the best I can describe it in a short form. I can't speak for anyone else but that's what it was for me. I will die alone. We never had kids. I am semi-estranged from my siblings who I just cannot be around due to major life view differences, ideological differences and lifestyle differences. Their kids are not interested in me. Their kids are also not interested in me. And in my last 15 years or so in the military I was set up for challenges most would not take on, which resulted in my ostracization by those I served with over multiple decades. I gave up on people and am now struggling with blood cancer, AFIB, and a rare heart condition that I apparently was born with but never knew about, and severe arthritis from decades of daily workouts, and military activities. In short, I can't imagine anyone I know who died that will be meeting me when the moment comes. I am a super introvert and any attempt I make to connect with anyone just fails or blows up in my face. As someone who gave up, I don't even expect connection. So what can we do when we die? I will say this though. One night in 2005 right after four of my soldiers being killed in an IED ambush, and one of them being mortally wounded and left lying on the ground beyond help, I laid on the ground next to him and whispered to him. I didn't know him personally but I said every good thing I could think of. That night in my sleep I felt a rush of vibration take over my body and floated up into a rich array of colors that washed over my body with strong feelings of love that I have never felt before or since. When I woke up, I was clawing at my poncho liner not wanting to wake up and leave this blissful experience. That dream or whatever it was gives me hope for a good experience when I die one of these days. Or maybe it was that soldier saying thanks for my send off to him. Or God letting me know that he'll be there for me.

He is truly very fortunate to have survived. Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA) are nothing to ignore. Learn the warning signs (a big one is seeing a pulse near your belly button). Six years ago, at age 66, my husband was getting some unusual bruising so I convinced him to go get a check up (it had been years). First thing the doctor found was he had a severely leaky mitral valve in his heart. Around the same time, his brother was having surgery to repair a AAA. Knowing that their mom had also had one, I suggested my husband get checked for one. Sure enough, he not only had a AAA, but two iliac aneurysms and two popliteal (one behind each knee) aneurysms. He had surgery to repair the AAA and iliac ones but the popliteal can’t be repaired at this time. I’m so thankful his were discovered before he had a dissection.

Atheists do not believe in God or Gods word. They only believe in what they can see with their physical eyes and feel with their physical hands. Yet, you can look up to the sky and see billions of stars and planets hanging out on nothing but, "gravity". You can't see gravity, you can't feel it. Scientists can't explain it. We only know something is there holding billions and billions of mega ton stars and planets in just the right places, for humans to have life on earth, something they call gravity, but believers call God. You can't see the spiritual until our body is dying or has died. Then our spirit will either go up to one we have accepted as our Savior or go down to one who receives those who refused to believe in the one who created them. I believe this man was given a strong warning and a second chance to seek God and His Son. I pray He does that. Believers who have experienced NDEs have encountered God, Jesus, angels and heaven. And have come back in awe complete peace knowing where they are going when they leave earth. And they tell as many as they can to ask God for forgiveness of their sins and to believe in Jesus Christ. I will never understand how someone could have this kind of experience and not change their mind about God. But I am praying for them. 🙏

I have been listening to, reading about, and watching people recount their NDEs for just over 10 years. I have over 10,000 of them behind me. There are very definitive patterns that recur regardless of belief systems, cultures, race, gender, or any belief system at all. There is most definitely something beyond what we are able to perceive in a normal conscious waking state. While psychedelics might get to some of this in altered states of consciousness, it is not the same. And while there are many definitions of what an “afterlife” might be, I am as sure as a living person can be that consciousness continues after death (that innate, felt sense that “I exist” or “I am”). Whether that qualifies as an “afterlife” by definition is up for debate. Some of these occurences defy any medical explanation at all. Probably the most radical I have encountered so far is one person who was “dead” for three days and in a body bag when he returned. He was only noticed by the morgue attendant, otherwise he would surely have been dead permanently when either buried or cremated. His “adventure” was certainly book-worthy. The stories are far too numerous for any person or organization to catalog, estimated to be in the millions annually in the US alone. And, these estimates are only for the ones reported in some fashion.

@thomasalden6263, I'm with ya, my friend. I've had 13 heart attacks and three full cardiac arrests ranging from 2+ minutes, 3+ minutes, and 4+ minutes. The first time, I went someplace unbelievable, where I could tell it was my mom who had died when I was 19. She was holding her arms out and just repeating my name. As she got pretty close, I could feel myself being pulled back, reeeally really hard, and woke up to people doing CPR. The second time was similar, but I saw my paternal grandparents. The third and final time was in the hospital. I knew I died and was standing in the first to my hospital room, looking at myself lying on that bed. People were riding in, through me if that makes any sense, and working frantically to save me. I kept trying to tell them to just let me go. I've had a good life and to just let me go. They brought me back, and I freaked every one of them out by telling them what they had said and what each had done. Being a paramedic for 32 years and a cop simultaneously for 14+ years, I learned that life is far too fragile. My best advice is tell the people that you love that you love them, forgive because grudges aren't worth it, and don't sweat the small stuff.

@@riverbilly64 the evidence for intelligent design is overwhelming. The one thing that Darwinian evolution has disproven is the evolution of the species. Science is showing conclusively that the Big Bang, the fossil record, the Cambrian explosion, the complexity of the cell, (believed to be a nothing bit simple blob in Darwin’s day), the coding language of DNA, the incredibly tight tolerances for life on earth all point to a creator as they always have. It wasn’t long ago that atheists were scoffing at NDE’s. What’s odd to me is the people who claim to believe only in science will believe anything but a “head being”, regardless of the evidence. That’s definitely odd.

In the afterlife I hope there aren't scads of people admonishing me for not accepting God into my life, just the same as I avoid them on this plane. Hoping I will be reunited with loved ones after I pass sounds like a movie plot. It comes down to how your mind is wired, are you mainly a rationalist or are you more geared towards believing in archetypes having dominion over you. Sounds like cult mentality to me. I really didn't appreciate him saying if you're alone when you die you f'ed up. I'm sure that idea frightens people & was unnecessary. If there is a god I dont believe that god is punishing.

my story: my mother who was also the person I loved most in the world and I were so connected I can't find the words to convey it. She gets sick when I am in the 7th grade and our neighbors graciously allowed me to live with them while she was in the hospital. I stay there October and November and assume she will be home in December. Dad comes to pick me up "yay!" I am going home. Except when we get into the car, he tells me she is gone and I turn to stone. For months I have dreams that she is with us alive and well and she always tells me I AM NOT REALLY DEAD. Somehow my 12/13 yr old mind knows that I am young and have a good group of friends and I am going to make the most of this time of my life. I also know that I will pay a price for that. And pay it I did in my 30s when I could barely function. I could not go on without her. I did not accept the situation as it was, I knew I would die soon. One after noon I saw a medium on the Joan Rivers after noon show who claimed to talk to "dead" relatives of folks in the audience. I could not get a reading with him and thought someone local must be able to do this in Boston. All the info just flew into my head. My car seemingly drove itself to a bookstore that had spiritual classes. I asked the guy at the front desk "where can I find a medium"?? He came back with a name and number. The night before my appointment with her I told my boyfriend that my mother talked to me in my head and told me that she died because the relationship was too close. I go to the medium the next day and that phrase was the first thing out of her mouth. By bf did not know her name or number and could not have called and told her [he wouldn't have in any case]. and that very moment I knew the meaning of those dreams, that she still existed and that was all I was looking for. That I will see her again is a certainty. That I can live with but I could not live knowing I would never see her again. [in my 20s I had several out of body experiences while falling asleep and it also helped confirm that we don't need our bodies to "exist"]. I hope this story helps someone who is grieving.

I can relate as in 2016 I died 8 times on the way to the hospital (from a massive widow-maker heart attack) and was the biggest recovery on record at Cedars Sinai hosptial... and I saw some major things. I wrote about it in my INSIDER article last year in September 2023.

@@JamesDirette meaning the most intense and fastest recovery. They had to revive me 8 times back to life and then went in a coma for a week right after surgery, where they kept me alive with about 30 IVs and hooked up to an Ecmo machine, which kept my heart beating. All my organs failed and when they took me off the Ecmo machine after 5 days, expecting me to die (like pulling the plug), I woke up completely recovered. All my organs miraculously healed within a day and was taken out of the ICU to a regular hospital bed... and then two days after that I was released from the hospital completely. Plus, all the doctors and nurses said they have never seen someone flatline 8 times in a row, only to survive, with a full recovery no less.

Yes it’s annoying seeing all of these people who are convinced that they know the answer to life’s greatest mystery. We have barely an iota of knowledge about our universe and consciousness. Junger goes into it in the book about how the things scientists have discovered especially in quantum physics are absolutely mind-boggling. (Just read about the double slit experiment, that alone is crazy) He said recently that “Maybe we understand our reality as well as a dog understands a TV”.
@Black-dog-likes-walks

I read his book and it was truly outstanding. Definitely a must read. In his book one can see that Junger is a rationalist almost to the extreme. No nonsense and everything has some sort of rational explanation. With that said Junger was moved by his experience to realize there is more to life than what we perceive and experience. In fact it’s likely that there is some sort of phenomenon, experience, consciousness or life after death. He comes to this conclusion after investigating near death experiences, physics/ quantum mechanics, and science.

A staunch atheist, and yet at least following a brush with death recognized that it was truly a miracle that he'd survived...and so, without jumping to conclusions, the wheels *are* turning, however gradually, at last, within the skeptical person's heart & mind.... It's progress. And hopefully they will ultimately connect those dots with the final leap of faith.

Pride? You read him absolutely wrong. He said it in a matter of fact way but not in a prideful way. If you want others to respect you for believing in a higher being, you should also respect them for being atheist. We believe what we want to believe. This guy is “ atheist” because his dad was “ atheist “ and even after seeing his dead dad is still like NAH 🤔🤦🏻‍♂️ Dawkins said something like even if GOD physically showed Himself to him , he would still probably believe he was just hallucinating. Most people who do not believe it’s because of one thing and that’s pride. If you were a Christian you would know this because it’s littered throughout the Bible. The Creator loves, adores & accepts us all back home with open arms, whether we believed in the Creator or not while we are living on earth. The Creator is Unconditional Love & that is how "Unconditional Love" reveals itself to us all when we get back home. That is the best news one can possibly (re)discover, but some human beings only feel comforted by heaven if it is accompanied by the assurance of some kind of perfect, harsh-judgement, vengeance & external hell-fire. When we go back to our celestial home: None of us wish that upon anyone. We are once again also Unconditional Love & Unconditional Forgiveness without reservation. All the pain, negative feelings, experiences & thoughts we had as a human being evaporate upon our human death because they aren't a part of our Soul's Nature, that's a part of a Human's Nature. Human nature isn't relevant once we leave our human body. The only thing that goes back home with us is the love we gave & recieved while on Earth.

I woke up on my back in darkness with a radiant light to the side of me and I could feel someone standing there who made a loud clearing throat sound. I was startled and rattled and closed my eyes so tight. I then woke up in my hospital bed after being taken off the ventilator. I had my right lung removed because I had a pulmonary artery hemmorhage from a tumor the size of my fist. It all started when I was coughing up tons of blood.

Well, isn't an atheist someone who doesn't believe in God? He never said this experience has led him to believe. He just says the experience has made him think there might be an afterlife. There is an afterlife for all of us. But depending on whether we have faith in the living God who created us, will determine where we will be in eternity.

If you read through the thousands of cases of people who've died, one thing is really clear -- non-believers have the same wonderful experiences and the exact same level of love and acceptance as religious people. That's not what you want to hear, I know, but based on countless experiences, God clearly doesn't care one bit if humans are religious. In fact, a pretty sizable percentage of people who used to be religious come back and say they cannot stomach religion after meeting God. Some have even gotten divorced because their spouse couldn't handle their disinterest in religion after decades of church going. They usually say it's too limited or judgmental, etc. I've read and watched hundreds of hours of accounts, and I'm just telling you what people who've died report. That said, it does seem he's benefited from the concept of being more than just a meat suit.

@marthajean250 she wasn't talking about religion which is a set of doctrines and practices. She was talking about the Christ Jesus and his light and love - not the same things and the bible itself clearly makes the point that the latter is what's important.

@@grafxgrl8030 I was saying that when @marthajean50 replied to your correct comment about the truth of Jesus with her own comment about religion which are really 2 different things then her comment doesn't necessarily contradict yours. I was just trying to let her know that even though a lot of people believe religion is what Christ taught, the definition of religion really is much closer to meaning prioritizing doctrine & rules above the 2 great commandments in order to earn your way to heaven. But of course that's not what Christ was trying to teach us. So what @marthajean50 said about who she describes as "non believers" and God not caring about humans being religious is something I'd agree with as well. That's all.

An atheist has an NDE...sees a dark black, infinite pit open up next to him...and someone shows up claiming to be his dead, also atheist, father and tells him to come with him... If you know Christ, then his experience aligns with the Gospels...but not the positive outcome that someone who knows Jesus would encounter... I pray Sebastian, and anyone else with his mindset, finds Jesus through all of this...because it's all true

I agree. My feeling is this was not his father. Which is why he experienced terror instead of peace. I am praying he at least asks God to help him know that Jesus is real and is the only way, the only truth and the only life.

As someone who's been watching NDE reports on YT for Approx. 15 years what I see is a man who's not driven by finding the truth. Entrenching oneself in the place of an atheist, as is this makes you more rational or intelligent or strong is missing the whole point. I was an agnostic until I came across the subject of NDE. By chance. I wasn't searching for it. I didn't know about it. As I said, after so many years of watching NDEs and reading about them, I think that the LESS intelligent and rational thing to do is NOT to believe in an afterlife after studying them. Correction - it is FALSE that everything that is happens in NDE happens by taking drugs of lack of oxygen etc. These are just false slogans that people who don't know much about NDEs say. There are NDEs where people report things that happen or things that people did while they were "dead" that there was no way in the world they could have known unless their soul was indeed out of their bodies. There are shared NDEs. where the person who has an NDE is not even the one that's dying. And it's also unfounded to say that ONLY the dying can see the dead. There are so many people, living people, who claim to have the ability to see the dead and I don't see how he can categorically say they're lying. Bottom line, in my humble opinion, he didn't really delve deep enough to this whole subject.
