(1) always determine if the group is going to require separate bills (easiest approach and least politically/socially risky way, IMHO) (2) Otherwise, it is my experience that the true art of picking up the bar tab or dinner table bill, is to unobtrusively arrange with your server or the manager/etc, for no bill to be brought to the table, rather, request that at the end of the dinner, the server should bring/send to you the final bill, of which it has ideally already been charged to your account/card, such that all that is required of you is the addition of gratuity and your approval/fingerprint scan/signature, etc... at least this is pretty much the modus operandi of my social circle

If I picked up the bill I'm friggin paying for me, her husband, and 3 kids. So usually at family outtings I'll partner up with my parents. It's like choosing teams in volley ball. "ok we're splitting this 3 ways. Red team Blue Team and Yellow Team." Hey...wait a minute you have one less guy on Blue team!" "Yeah but you had to go an order the NY strip" "well he had 3 drinks even though he went with a burger" "ok ok...we'll give you mom and dad but we get the single guy" Deal!
