I've had my locs 11 years and I'm kinda moving into semi free forming. My hair is quite soft so my roots never stay in for too long. So now I just wrap my hair a lot or put it in two plaits. I used be quite into the maintained look but now Im really appreciating just letting my hair be.

GREAT INFO. I DO MY RETWIST EVERY 2 TO 3 MONTHS AND FEEL I CAN GO LONGER , I DO LIKE THE NATURAL LOOK, CAUSE I CAN WEAR IT ANYWAY WITHOUT THE RETWIST. I DO WASH ONCE A MONTH DEPENDING ON THE WEATHER AND HOW MY HAIR SMELLS ALSO. EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN PREFERENCE, BUT SAFETY FIRST, LESS IS BEST, BUT WASHING IS ESSENTIAL

Semi free form is definitely what my hair wants bc it is cotton soft and thin, but my strands are surprisingly strong thankfully. I am getting a fuller look and I like that. Some of my locs are flat and getting wider and I like that look also bc it gives my hair more volume. My hair grows into my locs and my bases are strong just from non manipulation and less washing. It will be 1 yr for me in April. I thought about adding a few cowrie shells, but I dont think my hair texture would be happy with that. Do you?
@AtreyuLocs4 жыл бұрын
Your texture sounds somewhat similar to mine in that, while it’s soft and fine, the strands are surprisingly strong. I wish mine hair grew into my locs though 😔 Anyway, it sounds like you have a good situation going on over there. I think you might be able to get away with cowrie shells considering they’re light and your bases are strong. Once upon time, I was going to put some in my hair but then the impulse dissipated and I never did 😂

I got an appointment in April to see the dermatologist because I have been having issues for a while. I didn’t know really about alopecia and a long time ago I noticed to spots on the side of my head where my locs where...but I though maybe it was damage from a dye job etc..so I have been shaving the side for years. Fast forward I guess I’m semi free form..I had spaced out seeing my stylist so I’m not getting my hair retwist as often. I would wash it and do a light re-twist and that’s it. But now I notice my edges is thinning out..but you said it could be my hair growing away from locs (who knew) so I’m going to try to braid what little I have until I see the dermatologist. This video is informative! Thank you !
@AtreyuLocs3 жыл бұрын
That’s great to hear! Yeah, a dermatologist can really pinpoint what’s going on with any skin/scalp issues. There are so many reasons why a person could be losing hair or thinning out that it takes someone with expertise to narrow in on the exact cause or source. And yes, if there’s hair still growing out of your scalp but the loc itself is thinning, then most likely the hair is growing away from your locs. The braid technique has been a loc-saver for me 🙂 I’m glad the video was helpful. Thanks for letting me know. And good luck with that appointment!

When are supposed to palm roll? Like after a wash, every time? Since ur not retwisting. I do separate my locs after my wash sometimes but two of my smaller locs are flat near the root but all others are not flat.
@AtreyuLocs3 жыл бұрын
When to palm roll is completely up to the individual. If you’re worried about locs getting flat then, yeah, do a light palm roll after washing your hair, even though you’re not retwisting, since the hair is malleable while wet. You don’t have to palm roll every time. You’ll figure out how often you need to do it. I hope that helps!

Thank you! And congrats on 10 years! Yes, I suppose being lazy leads to the same end result 😂 To answer your question, as long as no tension is being applied to your scalp when using the clips or rubber bands, you should be fine. Make sure neither one is too tight on the locs as well. They could thin out from the pressure. Hope that helps!
