Went to fight in Iraq in 2001 when I was 18 years old. I was just a kid. I left as a pissed off kid. Came back a humbled, legless man. This song always makes me cry cause i still till this day can not imagine how my mother felt. Im first generation American. Both my parents are from Mexico and they couldn't understand why I wanted to go and give my life for my country. I am a proud American and I would do it again a million times over.

yeah, if I remember correctly, there was a banner or something that said "Gold Star Families". I had a hard enough time not bawling like a baby through this song but when that happened.... oh the dam broke and the tears flowed like a waterfall. How in the world Tim got through this song, and Alan Jackson got through his first live performance of "Where Were You" is beyond me.

I was born in 1963. Growing up in the early 70's, the news wasn't running 24/7 on several different channels and kids weren't allowed to hang out in the middle of adult conversations. So i was in my upper teens before I knew about the viet Nam war. The way the soldiers were treated when they came home, it broke my heart! I'm not from a military family, but I was raised to honor and respect soldiers and veterans. May God bless them all and their families!❤

A friend's father passed 8 years ago. After he came home from Nam, he worked tirelessly thru the VFW for Vets and other worthy causes. Although his highest rank was Sargent, the VFW gave him a 21-gun salute and a lonely F16 did an unofficial spectacular fly over. I never seen a sendoff like that before or after.

Dear beautiful human, I'm listening to this as I wrote this, I once got a poem from a client who received it as a young girl from a canadian soldier (written in 1945) God and the soldier we adore In times of danger not before. When war is over and all things righted, God's forgotten and the soldier slighted.... I still have it, framed it and as of this year I'm spreadding the words..... Love your reactions, warm hug from a stranger from the Netherlands ❤

I was a US Navy Hospital Corpsman (FMF). Served 1986-1996. Last 5 years I was in charge of my command's Color Guard. Since then I have been doing military funeral details. Done more than I care to remember. This song came out around the same time my very small town suffered our lone casualty. One of my son's best friends and my friend's only son. Married just 3 weeks. Sergeant in the Marines. It was a long time before I could listen to this in it's entirety. Still hits hard.

Tim was on a plane reading an article about the goodbye letters soldiers write before they go off to war and was inspired to write this. Him and co-writers whipped it up pretty quick. There is no video you are correct because his album was already released when they wrote it and he was to perform at the ACMs and sing his single from the album. He sang this instead and this performance is THE only recorded version.

I know you don't need my 'welcome,' but you have it. I also want to say I think your patriotism is a breath of fresh air. Our country is going through such a tough time now, with people who don't value the freedom our ancestors got for us and the fact that good men and women continue to try to protect us every day. It's heartwarming to see that you value the promise of what this country can be.

there is a video to this-- it shows the soldier , his family, Arlington National Cemetery- and the family receiving the flag-- its a creator video, not official , but it follows the storyline perfectly. The song was popular over a decade ago in the midst of the war with the middle East, as all soldiers are required to write these letters -- just in case they aren't fortunate enough to come home.

Thankfully, there are 3 from dad unopened, 2 from each of his brothers unopened, 1 from me unopened, and 2 from my oldest brother unopened. Fun facts.... Tim was raised as Tim Smith, until he was ready to go to college. He asked his mom about going, and they couldn't afford it, but his dad he didn't know he had could. He met his real father then... The infamous baseball player Tug McGraw...!!!! Can you imagine finding out your father was rich and famous ?? His dad rejected him at first, but they had built a relationship eventually. I think his lack of his Dad in his life makes him the incredible father and husband that he seems to be. He uses his platform to spread good. That is a great thing. Glad you enjoyed this one. You are correct, the Patriotism in this country is not dead yet... but we are dying off at a great rate. Hoping the younger gens will get more involved and learn what it takes to keep a country like ours the way we do.

I've been a Tim McGraw fan along with my 2 daughters from his first album right up to now, his first 3-4 albums are amazing if you love great story telling and like great pick me up songs (I cleaned my 🏘 to it) 😅😅😅 When my son met his wife she was a bigger fan than me and my daughters so we got tickets to see his show and it was one of the best shows I've ever been to and we danced and sang to every song. His album Southern Voice is great and has 2 songs called I'm Only Jesus and You Had To Be There are awesome and the stories in the songs touched me so much, as a Christian I'm Only Jesus really got to me, great message. I just found you channel and I'm really enjoying it thanks

Thank you for your appreciation of the military, from a veteran's wife. I met him after he was done with active duty but every annual training and weekend he went away pulled on my heart... and knowing that he could be called out at any time. Anyways, thank you.

I went and visited with many of the families of my guys who did not make it home. This song and it’s presentation made those feelings come rushing back like a tidal wave. Awesome job.

If you ever need a good cry session, just watch this video again. This song is so good, but it is always tear inducing. I don’t think I have ever watched this video, or listened to this song without tears, running down my cheeks. I agree the part where Tim sings about angels singing amazing grace chokes me up every time.

Sebs & Alli Every soldier deploying to a war zone, or conflict zone, must write letters to their next of kin/loved ones, or at least when I was in. Those letters are held & delivered if & only, death occurs. That's what he's singing about.

Take a look at Joey and Rory Feeks, "When I'm Gone". This song was written and performed before Joey's diagnosis of terminal cancer. It was almost as though she could see the future.

I wrote those letters, every time I hear this song it takes me back too a place and time... 24yrs in the infantry and thank God those letters never had to be read by my children... Ali, the coming home videos are sweet, the saying goodbye to my 7 and 9 year olds.... absolutely the most difficult thing I've ever had done.

I know this is a little old, it is the first time I saw your KZbin. I am a career, marine, several deployments under my belt, I’d like to ask one favor…. There are two groups of veterans that are somewhat ignored, or put down, I would like for you to put out a special message to them. Every time I see a Vietnam vet, I shake his or her hand, and tell them, “this is far overdue, but welcome home!“ The Korean war is known as the, “forgotten war. “Please when you see a Korean that, walk up, shake their hand, and assure them their sacrifices, and the deaths of their buddies are not forgotten by America. Thank you, Semper Fi!
