And Prince (RIP) did this without going to a single rehearsal. Dhani was quite concerned that Prince would mess it up and Tom Petty (RIP) told Dhani (basically) to chill because it was Prince and therefore, it would be great. And it was. Petty and Prince were friends. Prince was a little arrogant and this unnerved people and some didn't want to work with him. But Prince knew his worth and felt he didn't have to rehearse like others did. Prince had a natural gift for musicianship.

That’s not the true story. Prince went to the rehearsal but Jeff Wynn’s guitarist that played the first solo wanted to do both solos. During the rehearsal he played both and Prince said let him play, I will take over during the performance. He never practiced that with them because of Jeff Wynn’s guitarist.

I feel like someone should explain what happened here. Just listening to it is very emotional, but Prince was really playing for a different audience. That was for guitarists, for musicians, to understand, something that George Harrison would have understood and appreciated. The entire solo was there to illustrate the genius of Harrison as a songwriter, and Harrison and Clapton as guitarists. Prince showed a deep understanding of the A-minor/A-major split modal through the way he stayed on the A-C-G theme as the root moves around to create the progression, then his move to the Dorian IV (F#) is a brilliant call-out to Harrison's guitar language - later in the solo, you can see Prince smile at Tom Petty when he goes back to the natural F to rejoin the rest of the band. The little fill figures are a nod to Clapton's brilliance on the original White Album recording as well. But Prince still made it his with the trem-picking, and that absolutely brilliant octave section about 2/3 of the way through, just really slick and nasty. A lot of this was literally Prince proving to the legendary guitarists in the audience that he was one of them, that he understood the theory, the technique, and the Beatles, to be honest, as well as anyone who ever lived. It's easy to understand that this solo was heavily emotional, just after George's passing, but the tribute is so much deeper than just being a great guitar solo - Prince paid tribute to the craftsman Harrison, and that was really powerful to anyone who got it.

Glad you took my advice and checked this out. It's one of those moments in time where time stands still and history is made. People come together to honor George and it all just comes together. Personally it was pretty emotional for me the first time i saw it. Seeing Dhani up ther playing his dad's song, looking just like his dad at that age, and me being a musician with a son who followed my footsteps to become one also it hit home pretty hard for me but nothing like the Taylor Hawkin's tribute when his son go up there to play drums with the Foo Fighters. That had me and my son in tears watching it.

That stage is one big rabbit hole of musical talent. The two singing are Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne. The two of them were part of a Supergroup with George Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Bob Dylan called The Traveling Wilburys. Jeff Lynne was part of another group from the 70's called Electric Light Orchestra aka ELO. Check their music out.

I watched it live and my mouth was open and I have loved Prince since I first saw him! I was so crushed when he passed especially the way he did. That solo was one of the best! Him as guitarist I also love Stevie Ray Vaughan you should check out Texas Flood or Pride and Joy! Yes Prince is a legend in every way! He wore heels and lace and women such as myself was like he is hot lol and he was until the day he passed.

Legend has it that to this day, Prince's guitar is still in orbit, and still smoking a cigarette after Prince sexed it like a madman! 🤣

My understanding was that Prince was responding to a few critics with this performance and boy did he make them eat their words!

I don’t remember if it was 50 or 100 list put out the top guitarist and Prince was rightfully pissed off. Prince wasn’t scheduled to be a part of this tribute. He asked to be part of it and of course they said yes. He was much more laid back and dropped this performance like a bomb😂 killed it 😂❤ The mic drop moment when he tossed his guitar was a big F you to Rolling Stone magazine 😊

I love, love, love this performance, so much incredible talent brought together, and Prince, of course, has epic guitar playing.

I think one reason Prince didn’t get the accolades he deserved as a musician was in part because he was a bit of a diva (in the sense that he knew he was fabulous and expected everyone else to know it as well). You can see it here. Didn’t go to rehearsals, just went in with his red hat and red accents grabbing attention before he played a note, and blew them all away, had a guy following him around ready to catch him when he fell backwards, and did that “mic drop” at the end with his guitar. 11 awesome guitarists all with great reps and yeah, some big egos hard won by decades of amazing work, and he just rolled them all right there on stage. He knew he was all that, and it rubbed people the wrong way sometimes. Thing is, you get to act like you’re all that when you ARE all that.

I was there - planted in front of the tv when the Beatles played on the Ed Sullivan show. From day one I was obsessed with George Harrison like a little teen girl gets. I later loved Prince, Tom Petty, and the rest of the guys playing here. I'm in awe of this performance and also I cry a little bit whenever I see it

I'm glad someone else mentioned this. The moment that you talked about Prince's guitar in the Purple Rain video, this was the first thing that came to mind.....I said "if he thinks this is good, he should hear him on While My Guitar Gently Weeps"....by the way, the others in the collaboration are Tom Petty (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) and Jeff Lynne (from Electric Light Orchestra....you should check them out if you haven't) on vocals, Steve Winwood on keyboard and Mark Mann (ELO, Oingo Boingo) and Prince with the guitar solos

Everytime I hear that solo and watch him it makes me gently weep because we will never get a new performance or a new album from Prince. There was never anyone like him before and there will never be anyone like him after. The world lost the day Prince died.

Prince’s solo was supposed to be half as long. You can see him looking back at Petty, and petty nods, keep going legend. .. and so he does

Very cool to see you discover Prince more and more. He was a National Treasure and as close to being the God of Music as any human could ever get. More Prince video reactions would be appreciated and would make me subscribe. Prince Live "Play that funky music/Hollywood Swinging/Fantastic Voyage" videoclip and "Empty Room @ Montreux" are EPIC and must-sees as well!

I’ve been a Prince fan from all the way back in the 1970s. Thank you for all your respect to Prince. The depth of his music is incredible. I love quite a few styles of music and find myself gravitating to the true artists. Thank you once again for your awesome reaction. I will look for some reactions from you for my other favorite artists. Luis Miguel, Luthier Vandross and Midland. Yes Latín, R&B and County. 🤠

The thing that is the best about this video that people forget, is that by this time (2004) Prince was not a "hot commodity" he had long since been on a major record label, and was not self releasing all his own music online. (a pioneer in that regard) but he was basically more than a decade out from having a bonafide charted hit. He was much more of a niche artist now, his music was much more spiritual, experimental, instrumental, and polarizing for his mainstream fan base. This performance came out of nowhere. In fact there was a lot of people that didn't know he was on stage until that solo! This performance coincided with the release of his album Musicology (2004), which was his biggest album and most mainstream in a long time. Following that up with a huge tour. So this was the beginning of his reemergence on the scene where he began to get the respect he deserved as not only a great performer, but as truly one of the greatest musicians in history!

Oh my heart is happy to see you react to this. Haven’t seen the reaction yet. However, I’m confident that you enjoyed this immensely and were quite surprised. The song was written by George Harrison from The Beatles. The young man between Tom Petty and Prince in the back playing the guitar, is George Harrison son Dhani.

Yeah Prince can do anyting don't believe me search KZbin for Prince bass solo . Back note on that video though Prince was asked to sit in on that song and asked to come to rehearsal where he said don't worry about it I got this and never went to. Other members of the set were slightly worried and not knowing what to expect. But were all in complete awe of what his performance did. Keep up the good work sir
