"That guy" is Jeff Lynne of ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) a legend in his own right. When interviewed once about how the Beatles might have ended up sounding if they'd remained together, John Lennon said ELO. Jeff became a close friend of George Harrison and produced much of his solo work and also performed with George, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan & Roy Orbison in The Travelling Wilburys. ELO in itself is a deep and hugely enjoyable rabbit hole to disappear into.

You should check out Jeff Lynne’s ELO. Quite the catalog of amazing hits. They are incredible. Jeff Lynn was a musical genius. This was Prince’s response to being snubbed by Rolling Stone Magazine’s top 100 guitarists. Prince didn’t do this in rehearsal. That’s why he kept looking at Petty to see if it was okay to keep going. Petty was happy to oblige and keep singing the chorus while Prince had his moment. And did I mention … Rolling Stone magazine execs were in the audience. He certainly proved his point here. And the strutting off stage at the end. Priceless.

And Prince (RIP) did this without going to a single rehearsal. Dhani was quite concerned that Prince would mess it up and Tom Petty (RIP) told Dhani (basically) to chill because it was Prince and therefore, it would be great. And it was. Petty and Prince were friends. Prince was a little arrogant and this unnerved people and some didn't want to work with him. But Prince knew his worth and felt he didn't have to rehearse like others did. Prince had a natural gift for musicianship.

While the solo on this video is tremendous, I can tell you with all seriousness that he played solos night after night, for 35+ years in everything from clubs to arenas to stadiums that blow this one away. I had the privilege of seeing him 5 times in person. My favorite memory is of standing about 6 feet from him while he ripped solo after solo for close to 3 hours, and melted my face off. And guitar heads need to also check out “Joy In Repetition” from his live album “One Nite Alone It Ain’t Over” There’s so many more. I don’t remember if it was 50 or 100 list put out the top guitarist and Prince was rightfully pissed off. Prince wasn’t scheduled to be a part of this tribute. He asked to be part of it and of course they said yes. He was much more laid back and dropped this performance like a bomb😂 killed it 😂❤ The mic drop moment when he tossed his guitar was a big F you to Rolling Stone magazine 😊

That stage is one big rabbit hole of musical talent. The two singing are Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne. The two of them were part of a Supergroup with George Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Bob Dylan called The Traveling Wilburys. Jeff Lynne was part of another group from the 70's called Electric Light Orchestra aka ELO. Check their music out.

He was music. It flowed through him and he became at one with his instrument. When he plays the piano it seems he is at one. His touch on the instrument he is playing seems almost a caress. He doesn’t force anything, it just flows and you are correct that he plays and arranges as he plays. There will never be another like him because his relationship with music was individual to him.

I feel like someone should explain what happened here. Just listening to it is very emotional, but Prince was really playing for a different audience. That was for guitarists, for musicians, to understand, something that George Harrison would have understood and appreciated. The entire solo was there to illustrate the genius of Harrison as a songwriter, and Harrison and Clapton as guitarists. Prince showed a deep understanding of the A-minor/A-major split modal through the way he stayed on the A-C-G theme as the root moves around to create the progression, then his move to the Dorian IV (F#) is a brilliant call-out to Harrison's guitar language - later in the solo, you can see Prince smile at Tom Petty when he goes back to the natural F to rejoin the rest of the band. The little fill figures are a nod to Clapton's brilliance on the original White Album recording as well. But Prince still made it his with the trem-picking, and that absolutely brilliant octave section about 2/3 of the way through, just really slick and nasty. A lot of this was literally Prince proving to the legendary guitarists in the audience that he was one of them, that he understood the theory, the technique, and the Beatles, to be honest, as well as anyone who ever lived. It's easy to understand that this solo was heavily emotional, just after George's passing, but the tribute is so much deeper than just being a great guitar solo - Prince paid tribute to the craftsman Harrison, and that was really powerful to anyone who got it.

Not only was he an awesome musician writer-producer, but he is one of the first people that actually didn't let the record company keep his masters. He kept his own music and got to do what he wanted. And when he got his money together he opened his own Studio and eventually he built the paisley park house with the studio in it. His artistry, creativity Uniqueness along with trend setting... I mean, when the record company wouldn't let him out of his contract, he wouldn't let wrote slave on his face. Eventually he got them to let his contract go and buy it out. Whatever I care. I remember which. He always did HIS thing. He went before his time, but his music will last forever.RIP❤

You know he didn’t know the song. Then came up with that. A musician without peer. So underrated for his musical abilities. That was a master class on how to go from rhythm to lead And i think the thing that’s most overlooked is that he’s quite happy to play as an ensemble then solo. I really hope he enjoyed the experience as much as we did. And I am forever grateful I got to see him perform live because he way and always will be extraordinary.

Prince was a musian/genius. He taught himself to play the instruments. Preforming was secondary to him. Music was his first passion. Prince came up at the same time as Michael Jackson and while MJ was talented and "Thriller" was an amazing record. I never thought it was better than the "Purple Rain" record. I was in 4th/5th grade when these records hit. However Prince and "Purple Rain" was largely over looked due to MJ and "Thriller." I think Prince being overlooked yet again by the music world/ Rolling Stone's Top 100 Guitar was a slap in the face. So when given the chance he did what he did best played his heart out by putting his soul into the performance and music. Then walked off knowing this time he would never take a backseat to anyone again. JMO!

Prince was the first musician to go after all of his rights to his music and his songs and his production. The battle lasted a couple of years, and during that time he couldn’t even use his own name, so he went by the symbol for Prince and the Revolution until everything is settled

This performance and Prince tossing his guitar up and walking off was Prince's middle finger to Rolling Stone Magazine who had just days before snubbed him on their list of the top 100 guitarist of all time. This performance cemented him as one of the top 5 greatest guitarist in history where he had always deserved to be. Nice reaction! There were a lot of stink faces by Rolling Stone Execs that night.

Glad you took my advice and checked this out. It's one of those moments in time where time stands still and history is made. People come together to honor George and it all just comes together. Personally it was pretty emotional for me the first time i saw it. Seeing Dhani up ther playing his dad's song, looking just like his dad at that age, and me being a musician with a son who followed my footsteps to become one also it hit home pretty hard for me but nothing like the Taylor Hawkin's tribute when his son go up there to play drums with the Foo Fighters. That had me and my son in tears watching it.

I'm amazed that you picked up on his impromptu guitar soloing. He was the king of just ripping a guitar solo on the spot, off the top of his head. To hear a blazingly amazing impromptu solo, check out his cover of "Just My Imagination" from an August 3, 1988 Aftershow. Made up, on the spot, effortlessly flowing through his fingers. Never played before, never played again. Grateful to the person that bootlegged that show!
