Hendrix, Page, Vaughn, Winter were innovators who built on the early American blues artists, and created the genre we now loosely call “blues rock”. All are considered guitar gods. They created much of what others did later. Prince was of the next generation, and was one of the greatest musicians of my lifetime. This much is indisputable. His music didn’t fit the “guitar god” mode of the others, and I feel that’s possibly why he didn’t get the recognition. IMO he’s up there with those other guys, and had complete mastery if his instrument. Just my opinion, though.

Dani Harrison was a huge Prince fan. When Dani heard that his father abdvPrince were both to be inducted unto the Rock Hall of Fame on the sane night, Dani asked if Prince would join the already tremendous line up and play the guitar solo. So George Harrison's son Dhani personally asked Prince to perform in this tribute to his dad at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. On the day of the performance Prince was late to the award ceremony. He hadn't rehearsed with the band. And the band actually went on stage without him. Prince literally showed up at the last minute and only just followed them on stage on the nick of time. Dhani Harrison however didn't even realise that Prince had made it. He only notices Prince is actually on stage with them halfway through the song at 2:03, when Dhani finally turns left and sees Prince. At 2:16 they catch eyes and smile. And at 3:35, Dhani Looks at Prince, nods at him to say "Go on, go for it!". Then Prince begins an absolute face melter which has since gone down as one of the best guitar solos in history.

George, Tom, and Prince are all together now and those heavenly guitars are definitely jammin'. I've read that Tom said they didn't rehearse this with Prince. Prince talked to Tom, and just said, I'll do some guitar work, or words to that effect. And if you notice, as they play, Prince is constantly looking at Tom, getting a feel for where the song is going, putting in the licks where they fit, then as he sees Tom is wrapping it up, Prince gives it that huge finish. Prince shines here, but he's also part of the team, taking a great song and tribute, and making it absolutely unforgettable.

It was truly amazing to see your wife’s reaction to this. 19 years later, Prince fans like myself are still in absolute awe at this unbelievable performance. It is truly one of the greatest moments in rock history…period. I once heard that Prince had never heard the song until he was sent the DAT to learn it. It was actually Prince’s idea to perform last; the producers actually wanted him to go first, I believe, but because he’s PRINCE, of course he knew exactly what he wanted to achieve by giving the last solo. Did you notice that the color scheme of his outfit perfectly matched the backdrop of the stage? I’m quite sure that was no accident…he knew exactly what he was doing. I sat and listened to a panel of some of his engineers at Paisley Park a few years ago and his guitar engineer discussed this performance. He said Prince tossed him the guitar and told him to give it to Oprah as a gift. What else can be said? We will never ever see the likes of Prince again in our lifetime.

I sometimes think the total package of Prince overshadowed the brilliant components of Prince. His voice, his songwriting, his dancing, his fashion, his ability to find and nurture talent, his ability as a producer, and, yes, his instrumental skills, particularly with the guitar. Any of those taken alone would be enough to nurture a career. With him, they sometimes end up subsumed by the totality of the supernova known as Prince.

The build up is everything. When showing this to someone new to it, you just want to say, "BUT WAIT!!!" What Prince could do with a guitar was genius and magical. Like he was born with it in hand. Thanks for the reaction!

Old school metal fan here and I never ever even knew Prince knew how to play a guitar until I seen this video a while back.I couldn't believe he could shred like he did.Got to respect those abilities there.

Just phenomenal talent on stage. Prince stole the show. He was a extraordinary musician. Was underrated as a guitar player and could hold his own with most - his showmanship was off the charts.

The young gentleman you see by Tom that was smiling with Prince before he began was George Harrison'e look alike son Dhani ( pronounced by himself as Danny ). I watched this live that night, I knew how close friends everyone on that stage was to George, and as an avid Beatles/George was my fave fan) trust when I say I went through more than one box of kleenex. Yes, Prince is who is so awesome in this and deserves the accolades 100%, but it was all so much much more...a group of friends who all knew each other coming together for their fellow brother.

When I watch this performance, I think about life before recordings and how that if you didn't see it live, you just missed out, forever, that's all there was to see and hear back then, live performances. How lucky we are to have recordings! As amazing as this was though, imagine if you were there in the audience? I think I would probably be crying and screaming or maybe I'd pass out or something. And Prince, he yeeted that guitar to heaven, because he killed it.

Was fortunate to see him live in 2014, depending on what reading you do on Prince but its pretty well documented he was proficient in playing 10-12 different instruments by the time he was a teen but guitar was his first love, Hendrix was a huge influence for him.

I was in line at a gas station once and heard two teenagers behind me say “there are no famous Black guitarists”. I’m in my fifties. I turned around and said “Prince!” A little louder than I meant to. I then told them about Jimi Hendrix and Sister Rosetta Thorpe.

Glen Campbell didn't make it either. Go check his visit with all the country people as he does "Gentle on MY Mind' then says "I'll play one" and proceeds to play that guitar better than anyone coulda done. It was an AMAZING performance. Yeah . And he does a "william tell overture" as well that is mind blowing. But he aint a guitar player worthy of Rolling Stone. Rolling stone wouldn't know music if it got jammed up their ass.

Prince is the ish on multiple levels. His own discography is enormous with reportedly thousands of songs in his library that were never released. He also wrote music for dozens of other successful artists - many of the female pop musicians of the 80's built their careers performing Prince songs. The man could obviously shred on a guitar. Finally he played an amazing game of hoops despite a height disadvantage.
