The night before Prince rehearsed (twice) with the band and barely did anything on the guitar-in fact the other guitarist did the solo instead of Prince. Prince purposely did that so nobody would tell him to tone it down. The only time anyone saw this performance was the night it was performed.

Rolling Stone Magazine left Prince off its top 100 guitarist list , he didn't know the song , and did little rehearsal with the group. He told them not to worry. Some of the judges from Rolling Stone are in the crowd. What an F you moment. Only Prince.

Prince knew the Beatles late, but it was right around the time of ‘Purple Rain’ and he showed it on ‘Around The World In A Day’. He was a big fan. He responded to the proposal to play this song with ‘I liked the idea, I'm going to listen to the song a few times and I'll let you (the event organisers) know’. In the words of the musicians present, he didn't rehearse a shit because the two times he started to play the solo, Marc Mann stepped over him: Prince didn't complain a word. Then Tom Petty, who was a friend of Prince, agreed with him to play the last solo. At that point Danny was going crazy, both for the moment and for the show. Petty told him not to worry because ‘it's just Prince doing a solo, what can go wrong...’. PS: Prince knew every name on the stage and their works. Steve Ferrone, the drummer, get close to Prince to say hi, Prince said "I know you". Minutes after, Ferrone hear a familiar riff from the stage: one from one of his songs played by Prince.

There’s quite an interesting lore around this particular performance. Supposedly Prince had been omitted from a 2003 list published by Rolling Stone about the greatest guitarists of all time, just months prior to this performance. To top that off, reportedly George Harrison’s widow wasn’t thrilled with his participation in the event, as she thought his extravagant persona might take away from the focus being on George. Anyways, the story goes that every time Prince would show up to rehearse with the rest of the star-studded band, they would interrupt the session, or worse yet Jeff Lynne’s guitar player would just start playing the solo, note for note, like Clapton. And Prince would just stop and let him do it and play the rhythm, quietly strumming along. This went on for a couple practice sessions. According to Joel Gallen (producer and director of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony), Prince was not given the opportunity to even rehearse his solo. It got so tense that he supposedly had to step in and ask Prince if he wanted him to intervene, to which Prince just replied- “Don’t worry about it, I’ll deal with it”. What you see here is precisely how he dealt with it. Which explains his epic walkoff at the end, he just throws the guitar off in the air and walks off the stage like a boss. It was the ultimate “fuck all y’all” . Sadly he was gone way too soon.

Here’s a little more info/clarification for you… The drummer is Steve Ferrone. He played drums for Average White Band as well as Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. In an interview with Questlove, he told a great story about going up to Prince during the rehearsal and later hearing Prince playing the guitar riff from one of the Average White Band’s songs (I think it was School Boy Crush if I’m remembering correctly). Also, Marc Mann was playing lead guitar, who was a member of E.L.O. with Jeff Lynne. George Harrison had passed already at the time of his RRHF solo indiction. This was in 2004 and he passed in 2001. Unlike the Kennedy Center Honors, where the honorees tributes are always done by other performers, the i nductees of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame usually always perform when they are being inducted. Except when they are inducted posthumously like George was. Thank you for your reactions. I rather enjoyed watching your faces. I will listen to this performance sometimes and without watching I still know when Prince comes in. I get goosebumps every single time. That man was definitely a master of his craft.

As someone else mentioned, Prince was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame this same night. He performed a 20 minute set with his band earlier in the evening, but this performance gets all the attention, probably because of how many great musicians were involved. I find it sad that everyone knows of the ‘George Harrison tribute’ but not Prince’s own induction.

Prince was in high school in 1975, and not active. The Revolution were disbanded by the end of 1986, so they were not there in 2004. Steve Winwood is not known for being a "blues guitarist." In fact I have never heard him described as such and I've been a fan since 1980. Other than that, your intro was longer than it needed to be.

Winwood played lead organ. Traffic, which he fronted, is one of the best classic rock groups, ever. And Prince went solo (without his own band). And Prince could have, if he wished, played on that stage any instrument with vigor as he learned to play 19 different instruments and played most of them on songs he wrote.

So here’s the real story behind Prince performing. Tom Petty and everyone else formed to perform the tribute to George Harrison who was inducted into the hall of fame along with Prince and others. Prince at the last minute asked to join the group to be part of the performance. He decided to do this brocade he had just read an article by Rolling Stone of the best 100 guitarists and Prince wasn’t included. This was his response to that. 😊 I love that he chose to use his trusted Hohner Mad Cat. That guitar has been with him since the beginning- 1978. 😊 FYI, The lean back was planned, his security guard was there to hold him up. Also his guitar tech caught the guitar. 😊

Stop 🛑 sating the Revolution! None of those people are there. These are real rock superstars! Jeff Lynne is sharing vocals with Petty. His guitarist from the Heartbreakers, Mike Campbell is on lead guitar until Prince comes in. Dhanni, George's son is playing rhythm along with Petty. Steve Winwood is on the keyboard. I know your generation is lazy, but geez ... Just do 60 seconds before you start spouting out erroneous, incorrect information and opinion.... Come on man!

@davidmullens7565 it’s sad that this performance became all about Prince. George Harrison, or his gorgeous song, is rarely mentioned in the majority of these reactions. Most don’t even read the complete title, never mention George’s name, or know who’s being inducted. Just waiting to see Prince. George and the others are acknowledged in this one, but they still came across as a side note. A stage full of true rock legends deserve better❤️❤️❤️

My dude. you need to chill out for a sec. Prince was inducted, I see other musicians outside of Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, and Dhanni Harrison. I was guessing that Prince and the Revolution were playing together because that was his first major group from what I have been learning. I have learned I was mistaken. And FYI, we did research before we hit play to figure out who was playing what, but there were still musicians that weren't named.
