First time I heard this, I was in a relationship and he was cheating, since I couldn’t talk to him, he kept telling me I was crazy, so I had him to watch this video with me. He turned around and looked at me. I had both our bags packed and when the song ended he turned to me and said “wow”. I picked up his bags and told him, don’t stay or I’ll go. He picked up his bags and left. The song got the message across better than I ever could!

Nettles actually wrote the ballad four years prior to its release. It was inspired by Reba McEntire‘s Grammy Award-winning song, “Whoever’s in New England,” that tells the predicament of a wife who thinks her man is having an affair. However, Nettles decided to tackle it from a different point of view. While there are a myriad of songs written from the viewpoint of a person betrayed by a lover, Nettles could not find one that sings from the perspective of the other two people involved. The singer-songwriter noted that most people did not realize that even those who are doing the cheating get hurt too. So, Nettles chose to put the other woman’s perspective in a song - and the moment she did, she was overwhelmed with emotions that “Stay” pretty much wrote itself. Even though Nettles has never lived the track’s storyline, she knew the subject of cheating and betrayal is something many listeners could relate to. Sugarland‘s other member, Kristian Bush, even remembered how he was left speechless by its lyrics the first time he listened to it. *Taken from an article www.countrythangdaily.com/sugarland-stay/

I admire Jennifer for tackling the "other side" - how the "other woman" feels in her relationship with a cheating husband. As others have said, Jennifer's husband cheated on her yet, in the end, she chose to highlight the pain of that other woman over her own pain. And, she gave the other woman the role of becoming strong enough to reject the relationship - to regain her own pride. Oh - and damn, doesn't Jennifer have some pipes???

I love at the end when she finally recognizes her worth, and tells him why doesn’t he stay… with the other woman. I think part of the prize of staying faithful and married to one person, is later in life getting to experience having grandchildren together. To look back at the life you’ve built together and reap the rewards of that hard work. Having a 50yr wedding anniversary party with kids and grandkids, all of whom are there and celebrating with you because of the commitment you made to your partner 50yrs earlier.

She is singing from the mistresses point of view. She is so emotional because her husband cheated on her. To be able to see the other woman’s side is amazing and heartbreaking. You will notice in country music songs the song will start off with a certain lyric, but then they will flip the script, so that the words that meant one thing at the beginning of the song now means something completely different. At the beginning of the song, the mistress is begging the man to stay with her. At the end of the song she’s telling the man that he needs to stay with his wife because she’s not gonna deal with his crap anymore. Amazing song amazing reaction, thank you.

And like you, it makes me want to do right by my wife and be thankful for having her in my life. Like Jennifer alluded to in the song, she will only beg you to STAY for so long before she tells you to go STAY with the other gal. That's if you even get that lucky at all. She might throw you out right away! I think the song was written from a non-married point of view, but the lyrics apply to both married and non-married couples! Great heart-felt reaction by you Serb. I loved that. 👍👍

"Stay" inspired by Reba McEntire's ("Whoever's in New England," which is from the perspective of the wife). "Stay is from the perspective of the other woman. Even though Nettles has never lived the track’s storyline, she knew the subject of cheating and betrayal is something many listeners could relate to. Jennifer Nettles was married to bar manager Todd Van Sickle in 1998. They divorced quietly in 2007 the year that the song came out. The reason for her divorce from Todd Van Sickle was never disclosed by either party with Jennifer just stating the "I didn't get married in the spotlight, and I did not intend on getting divorced in the spotlight," she said. "It was private and sacred to me, and when you hold something sacred, you keep it to yourself." The emotional struggle that comes with divorce for what ever reason is what shows up in the video. The song was written 4 years before it was released. They divorced quietly in 2007 the year that the song came out. You really need to watch the official video for this song it is just what you see here; A singer with an acoustic in the background but was recorded during her divorce from Van Sickle.

That song and especially the video hits you right in the feels. I love the raw emotion by Jennifer and how she’s hurting, begs him to stay with her, but develops strength as the song progresses until she tells him to stay away. This topic may be uncomfortable for some but Country tells it like it is and if there’s any emotion that you’re dealing with, this genre will bottle those feelings up and make music that will hopefully help you. Great songs along the lines of this one, about infidelity, realizing your mistakes, or even getting the courage to break free from a damaging relationship are All These Years by Sawyer Brown; Promises, Reasons I Cheat, and Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart by Randy Travis; It’s Your Call by Reba McEntire; and You Were Mine by the Dixie Chicks. Man, I’d love for you to react to those songs!!!
