As many have said.. you kinda missed in the last verse where she gains the courage to leave the relationship and tells the man to just STAY with his wife because she is done. I have seen a lot of reactions to this song and many of them have a similar reaction. They can't get past that it is sung from the mistresses point of view. Which is understandable. But in the second verse she talks about all of the lies she was told. While she knew he was married, he likely told her things like how his marriage was basically over and he no longer loved his wife. She believed all the lies, making her as much of a victim as the wife. She didn't see herself as a homewrecker but rather as a woman saving the man she loved from a horrible marriage. It is a lot to take in, which is why she still basically begs him in verse 2 to stay with her. Once she realizes the truth we get the 3rd verse. She is "up off my knees" and standing on her own. She realizes she is better than this.

Oh she listened. And she’s 100% right. If a woman knows a man is married and still goes after him, she’s wrong from the beginning. Even if she changed her mind in the end. She’s asking why the wife gets the best of him… BECAUSE SHE IS THE WIFE. No side piece has ever been the main dish.

I wish he would have left his wife to be with the homewrecker, then he could cheat on her and give her a taste of her own medicine. I will never feel sorry for a 2 bit Annie. This is a format for country music. The lyrics mean one thing through the song, then on the last chorus they flip the script. The kicker about this song is that Jennifer Nettles the woman who sings it, was the wife, not the mistress. They wrote the song, and she sang this song from the point of you of the mistress, when in real life, she was actually the wife in the scenario.

Keep in mind, that in country, one line often changes meaning throughout the song. At first she was saying "why don't you stay (with me)" and at the end.. "next time you think of leaving her need for mine.. why don't you (just) stay (where in her bed). I highly recommend watching the studio version even if you don't react to it. The emotion she puts into this song is absolutely genuine. I'm with you on the feelings about cheating. The song, though, does certainly explore the side of a common story that isn't usually explored.

I have a dear friend who was the other woman at least twice that I know of. Watching her go through it was heartbreaking. I can't say I understand why she let herself get in that situation, but she knew very well that neither man would leave his wife for her. She grew out of that phase of her life. I love the progression in this song where the woman is begging him to stay with her, to telling him she won't live that way anymore and he should stay with his wife/girlfriend. Anyone can make a mistake, but it takes a strong person to stand up for themselves and choose something better. Wikipedia-According to Nettles, "Stay" was inspired by Reba McEntire's 1986 single "Whoever's in New England", a ballad in which a wife addresses her unfaithful husband. "Whoever's in New England" was, in turn, based upon "Weekend in New England," a pop hit by Barry Manilow. After hearing "Whoever's in New England," Nettles thought that it would be an original approach to take the perspective of the "other woman" (i.e., the mistress), as very few country songs had ever done so. Once she decided to take that perspective, the song "practically wrote itself" here is Reba’s song kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6SUqaOLrdeAnrcsi=olnl-NEL73zyUQlf here is Barry’s song kzbin.info/www/bejne/amaygJaPhbBga5Ysi=SKdcq2A9E5W6upIi
