The old man was the care taker of a ranch Neil had purchased. Their talks were the inspiration for the song.

Um it’s the younger man who owns the ranch saying “it doesn’t mean that much to me to mean that much to you” … it means I employ you, do what I want
@Tijuanabill
@Tijuanabill 8 ай бұрын
@@DD-sr9xm I can't agree with that, sorry. Why would the young man say he's "been first and last, look at how the time has passed, I'm all alone at last?", after saying "run around the same old town". These are not the words of a young man, at all. To me, it's obvious the writer is interested in the old man, and his life, but the old man couldn't care less.

Neil Young’s early music like “Old Man” was one of my favorite songs in middle school back in the early 1970’s. His Harvest album is still won of my favorites. I’m 12 years old again when I listen to it and it takes me back to a simpler time in my life ❤ I saw him in concert in Phoenix, AZ for my birthday sometime in the 2000’s. He was awesome 👏

The caretaker's name was Louie and he had lived on the ranch most of his life and knew every inch of it, personally. It was previously named the "Lazy Double L" ranch by the two attorney's who owned it as hobby ranch. Louie came with the ranch as one of it's most valuable assets when they themselves bought it and he stayed with it when they sold it to Neil. Neil renamed it "The Broken Arrow Ranch". Louie lived on and cared for it with all his heart and soul and Neil, as the new, young (no pun intended) owner was astounded at his utter dedication and devotion to it. The ranch itself is what the line "doesn't mean that much to me, to mean that much to you" is about. Neil grew to love the ranch as much as he grew to love and admire Louie and his outlook on life...or so they say.

I love this intimate performance with just Neil & his guitar (harmonica). He was only 27 when he recorded this song as a young man. Now he is an older man at 77 years old. Neil is a very talented musician, singer & songwriter. He was with the groups Buffalo Springfield & Crosby, Stills & Nash in the later 60's. Also had his own group with Crazy Horse for a few years. Neil went solo & has had so many great songs over the years. The albums "After The Gold Rush" & "Harvest" from the 70's are considered 2 of his best.

Went to a Neil Young concert in Tampa, Fl early '80's. Many microphones were set up around in a circle on the stage and each one had a different instrument at it. Neil walked up to the first microphone, picked up the instrument, played a segment of music with it and walked on to the next microphone where he did the same. Once he'd played all the instruments, they played all the music together and he sang to it. I hope I have explained this well enough to do him justice. It was an amazing evening.

Neil has so many great songs to recommend. He started out in a band called "Buffalo Springfield" and wrote and sang "Mr Soul". Some other songs are "Cinnamon Girl" and "Everybody Knows This Nowhere" and "Down By the River". His albums from the early 70s include "After the Gold Rush" and "Harvest" albums which rank are up there with the best in rock. Check out "Don't Let It Bring You Own" and "Southern Man".

On February 1, 1972, I hitchhiked with a buddy 80 miles to Pittsburgh in a blizzard to buy the Harvest album on the day of its release. I will never forget that when we were walking on the ramp from I-79 north to I-80 west in a foot of snow, an angel of a mother with her two kids in the car, stopped in a blizzard to give us a ride. There are so many great songs on this album including Old Man, and I still regularly listen to them today!

He meandered all over the stage playing all the different instruments. As someone who grew up with this man's music, it felt like a great honor to see it live. who needs a freakin band when you're this talented. The texturing and layering- -the back and forth with the highs and lows---knowing when to let the notes breathe--what notes to play softly and when to pounce on a note or chord is so missing in today's music. True musicianship and composing at the highest level.

Are you beginning to understand why we Boomers are so critical of today's popular music?
@hazmania
@hazmania Жыл бұрын
With good reason. So much is rubbish, no poetical or lyrical mastery, barely literate to be honest, and far too much use of electrical gizmos to auto tune the voice, the instruments. Summed up as many “artists” can’t actually sing in tune, can’t play any instruments, or can barely play one, and couldn’t write beautiful, meaningful lyrics if they tried. Obviously there are exceptions (like REN, Dimash, Aurora, Oliver Anthony) but mainly the criticism is fully justified. Annie, Cornwall, UK 🙂🌸

I don't know where to start. I should write a book about my experience with Neil and his music. I was 19 when I first heard one of Neil's songs. When I say one of Neil's songs, because I went to a dance hall in Houston one summer night in '70, and a very popular local rock / psychedelic band was performing - Fever Tree. As I walked in, they were playing "Nowadays Clancy Cant Even Sing".... As I walked around the place, something about those lyrics and kudos to Michael Keller the lead singer. He had such a raspy bluesy voice, the lyrics just seem to capture my attention. At the end of the night and as an encore they performed the song again and this time I was at the side of stage, totally mesmerized by the song. It was a few months later, as I was listening on the radio, a broadcast of Neil at Royce Hall, that I found out it was his song! Before that evening I thought it was one of Fever Tree's. That evening, Jan. 30, 1971, my birthday, became a major game changer for me. That concert of Neil's and especially when he sung Sugar Mountain was THAT moment in my life that took me in a musical direction I am so blessed to have experienced the 7 decades with Neil and so many others from that era. Sebs, if you do a deep dive into Neil's music, its going to be a very deep dive. His discography is immense! However that being said, there is a song he performed on his Live Weld album, in '91, that's actually a cover of his dear friend.... Bob Dylan. Its "Blowin in the Wind" His guitar playing, the soulful emotion he puts into that song is other- worldly. If there ever will be a song and how its performed by Neil on that album, to become a global anthem for world peace it would be his electric version of Bob's prophetic lyrics. Peace out kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJvEi4eAoNx_iNUsi=2WcgnQqQCaoZeKyS

The album "Rust Never Sleeps" is a great example of Neil Young's immense talent. This is where the "godfather of grunge'" really takes hold. but its a beautiful album and timely, coming out of the post punk period, mostly recorded live but presented as a studio album, it is full of raw beauty. The album as a vinyl disc has an acoustic oriented side and an electric side and it's a great example of Young's songwriting and playing. Favourite songs? just start at the beginning.

I've loved his music since the first time I heard it more than 50 years ago, he is one of the all time best singer/songwriters. Try anything off the "Harvest" album, you won't be disappointed.

You should listen to his song "Alabama". It was the reason Lynard Skynard mentioned it in their song "Sweet Home Alabama".

Check out his unplugged dvd where he sings, plays the harmonica and guitar all at the same time. Simply amazing.

Neil Young Gave The Band, CSN&Y his song, "Expecting To Fly," right before he quit the band. Crosby later said he felt stupid for being surprised at Neil's departure, as he said goodbye in the song.

If you want one you have probably heard, it's heart of gold. I believe they were on the Same album. He also sang that at the same concert as this performance.

Neil Young is an incredible musician, singer, songwriter in every style he has chosen for over 50 years. I've seen live as a rocker during his Rust Never Sleeps days, as part of the amazing harmonies and musical perfection of CSNY, as one of the legendary musicians performing for 3 days at Desert Trip 7 years ago. Summer of 2023 i was lucky enough to catch him in an intimate outdoor setting, only about 6000 seats, and his performance was mesmerizing! IMO still one of the best out there. Enjoy that rabbit hole, I'll enjoy watching you on the journey.
