I've never cared for Neil Young's voice, yet he's written some of the most poignant songs ever and I can't imagine them having the same impact with someone else singing them. There is definitely a different level of feeling that he brings to the music.

Decades ago at the Live Aid concert all of these rockers came out in their costumes and bs, then Neil walks out on stage by his self in sneakers, blue jeans and a plain white tshirt and his guitar and blew everyone other band away performing ' Needle and The Damage Done '. A bunch of glitter and a chunk of gold. ...ok, that's being too hard on everyone else... still, it was striking.

One of my favorite lines in any song: "Doesn't mean that much to me, to mean that much to you." He doesn't care what someone thinks of him.
@philipbarton2634
@philipbarton2634 4 ай бұрын
@albertsmith93156- I read it different. I think he cares very much about what she thinks of him. He is trying to shake off getting dumped. He is telling himself "its all good, I dont need her, I'm going home to my sanctuary (his ranch- I'm rolling home to you) and I'll be fine". It's one of my favorite lines also. Rallying optimism in the face of grief. The old man made it through similar emotion, and so can I.

@@philipbarton2634 I took it as he was talking to the "old man", not a girl. To me, it explains the separation of generations... young people not trying to impress the people that came before. The beauty of art is that it can be interpreted differently by those that experience it. Great line.

Neil has always been authentic ~ he made a point over the years to refuse companies that wanted him to endorse their products ~ yet he will fully get involved in causes he believes in ~ like supporting FarmAid & the First Nations ~ he has recorded some really powerful songs like "Ohio" which to this day still haunts me or "Southern Man"

Thank you for the heartfelt reaction Aileen! Though he has lived in the States most of his life Neil was born and raised in Canada and is genuine Canadian treasure! You must react to his song "Heart of Gold" from the same concert, and make sure you watch the intro too, as it shows a lot of his personality. Another one of his songs to get to one day is called "The Needle And The Damage Done". He has been called "The Godfather of Grunge" and I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert opening for Pearl Jam in 1994, a simply amazing concert!

@@marke8323 You don't generally relinquish your original citizenship when you gain a new one. I know this because I'm dual UK and Canadian. Neil is still very Canadian, not only because of his roots and where he was raised, but also in the elements and content and perspective of the songs he writes: see "Ambulance Blues" and "Helpless," just for two examples. Neil is still thought of as a Canadian artist by most music fans, I think. I mean, he's even associated with plaid flannel shirts, the style of loggers everywhere. 😉

A fellow Canadian, Neil Young has been a musical chameleon for the length of his long career. His early work as a member of Buffalo Springfield (Mr. Soul or Broken Arrow) as well as almost everything the band did. Next, he joined up with Crosby, Stills and Nash. Ohio is a cry of anguish as well as an angry call for change, among so many other great songs from them. His solo career has been so many different styles and always interesting, poignant and enjoyable. Old Man, Harvest, Heart Of Gold, Like A Hurricane, Down By The River, Cinnamon Girl, Harvest Moon, Long May You Run, Rockin' In The Free World, The Needle And The Damage Done, and so many more.

50 PLUS YEARS listening to Neil... he like Bob Dylan very gifted musicians, they're legends! Like the Beatles their music will be relevant for decades to come. So much music of his to explore! You are in for an experience of great rock n roll music, both acoustic and electric! You know, talking about electric, just for grins, the thing is there's so many, but nevertheless, if you like to get an idea of his electric side, search on KZbin for Cinnamon Girl. There's several, both acoustic and electric. Look for the electric version titled "Neil You & Crazy Horse - Cinnamon Girl (live 1991in real HD) Fun rock n roll video to watch! As a suggestion, Rolling Stone had a special edition of Neil couple of years ago. His life, and their take of his top 100 songs. They missed about 17, that I contacted them about them in no uncertain terms.... lol! Should have been at least his top 125! Since you asked, hopefully you can find the edition from Rolling Stone, there you'll find a treasure trove of of songs. However like I said there's at least 17 I came up with that should have made the list. Nice reaction Aileen. I see you covered Old Man just couple of days ago and first time seeing your channel... I subscribed because of your reaction to NY! Good job girlfriend! Peace, Love & Groovy Tunes!

Neil is one of the very best (imho), he was a very successful folk singer who scored hit after hit with his wordsmith abilities and acoustic guitar and harmonica skills. And then he broke the biggest rule in folk music, "thou shall not use electrical amplified guitars", and he introduced electric guitar and rock into his musical catalog. This could've killed his career, if he wasn't Neil Young.. because, the man is a musical genius and gave us countless of amazing songs. A few to keep in mind : "Heart of gold", "Needle and the damage done", "Rocking in the free world", "Harvest moon", "Southern man" (which prompted a reply from Lynyrd Skynyrd with the song "Sweet home Alabama"), "Ohio", "Like a hurricane", and "Powderfinger" are all songs you should check out at some time, you'll love them and hear all "shades of Neil" in that selection.

Neil wore a number of musical hats. This is acoustic Neil. But, the man was also an early pioneer of electric guitar distortion; dirty, dirty, dirty. They call him "The Godfather of Grunge", because he was doing grunge 10-15 years before it was a thing. At one point he paired up with Pearl Jam and they did concerts together. Eddie Vedder calls him "Uncle Neil". You should check out one of those live videos. Pearl jam will be doing a Neil song, taking it up in intensity, Neil walks on stage, the crowd explodes, then, BAM the intensity ratchets up to 10. Try Pearl Jam with Neil Young, Rockin' in the Free World, Toronto 2011

In 1966 Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Richie Furay formed a band called Buffalo Springfield and out of that band came Crosby, Stills and Nash, later on Neil joined the group. Richie Furay started a band called Poco and The Bass player Randy Meisner became a founding member of The Eagles. Anyway Neil is talented writer and guitar/ singer, I have followed him all that time. You should try Poco's Spellbound, Heart of the Night and Call it Love. There are more Poco songs like Rose of Cimarron that are really good.

One of the deepest rabbit holes there is,period. And probably THE most diverse artist,stylistically,in modern music history. Put it this way,there's another side,one of many actually,to Neil's music that earned him the moniker "The Godfather of Grunge". And pushing 80 now,he's still pumping out great music. Right up there with the greatest songwriters of all-time. I'll suggest anything off his Everybody Knows This is Nowhere album from 1969,a couple years before this video. It's his first album with Crazy Horse,and Neil Young and Crazy Horse could be an entire rabbit hole in and of itself. Try out Cinnamon Girl,Down By The River,the title track of Cowgirl In The Sand. LOVE your reactions.

Old Man and Heart of Gold are worth the price of admission alone for Neil Young. He told a story about when he first played this solo work for his band members in csny he took them to a lake on property he owned and they went out in a little boat and he had amps set up on both sides of the lake and he played these songs in full lake stereo...lol. Obviously, they were impressed.

Neil is among dozens of artists from the era who played acoustic guitar and wrote/sang songs. Some made it big, most didn’t.

Alieen, I was lucky enough to take my Dad to the Sydney Big Day Out 2011? we listened to this song. I'll take it to the grave with me as one of the most 'connecting moments' we've had. Seeing one of my Dads' hero's and what a song. check out' Heart of Gold'!

Oh Aileen the Neil Young rabbit hole runs so deep. His career is a lengthy one starting wirh Buffalo Springfield then joining Crosby , Stills & Nash to having his own band with Crazy Horse and solo material like this. Style wise he covers a lot of ground from acoustic ballads to fuzzed out rockers. Well worth the deep dive. Check out the song Harvest Moon , i think you'll enjoy that one.

I love all of your genuinely emotional reactions. Helps me feel music again that I’ve gotten used to, and listened to so many times, the emotion has faded. You help renew the emotional reaction and attachment to this music (especially Pink Floyd!). Oh and you are absolutely gorgeous.

Aileen, Explore Neil's career, not only as a solo artist, but with The Buffalo Springfield (with Stephen Stills, Richie Furay & fellow Canadians Bruce Palmer and Dewey Martin), and Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young -- TREASURES GALORE EVERYWHERE -- Seeing The Buffalo Springfield live when I was in college around 1968 was something I'll never forget -- Neil & Stills were playing dueling lead guitars in a song and jumping up & down face to face like little kids in a backyard competition ..... "Expecting to Fly" from them, "Mr. Soul", etc, etc ..... & of course "Ohio" from CSN&Y about the Kent State university student slayings by the National Guard during an anti-Vietnam war protest -- Neil's career, PHEW -- Truly one of the GREATS

My goodness. Wonderful reaction to a beautiful song. This song came out when I was 14. I'm 65 now and it still makes me smile as I remember my youth, the "old men" I worked with and my life now with my ever growing family, children, and grandchildren. Perhaps there is a pang of jealousy that I'm no longer that young man, but it quickly goes away when I reflect on everything that has come to me in my life. Thank you, yet again for sharing your reactions to what, art least to me, weas some of the greatest music ever made.

Neil was an old soul. A deep dark well at a young age. Now that's he's old, he's settled, but back in the day he was a true artist. Btw, he still lives on the same ranch.
