They actually recorded this song as a revolt against the academy of country music. When they told George Jones to go home and not perform after they cut his performance down to a minute. Ya just don't do that to a legend. I believe this song won Song of the Year. That shows how powerful it was. During alan ACM performance he sang a few bars of his song and stopped dead only to break out singing George Jones song out of respect for the legend. He then walked off the stage like a Boss.

Back in the 80s country music started shifting into Southern rock... George Strait helped shift it back to a more traditional sound, and since the early 2000s it has started shifting to a southern pop sound, there are many artists and bands that are holding the line, but none as influential as George Strait was/still is.

Strait…he’s got some good stuff, but a lot of his fans just seem to be fans of something easy to grab onto. A lot of them seem like they haven’t really delved into country deep enough, IMO.

This is epic. The song won Bluegrass Song of the Year. George and Alan's performance was the CMA Performance of the Year and a year later the CMA Song of the Year, despite not being released as a single. The line, "cut out its heart and soul" pretty much sums it up.

These two are 100% traditional country. No flash, no dancers, no costume changes. LOL Just them & a guitar & a backup band, standing onstage, in the same spot, until they are done with the performances. It's ALL about the music & the story. Alan actually walked out of a country awards show when Beyonce performed. He said he had nothing against her or her talent, however, he was disgusted with the publicity stunt of the whole thing, chasing the dollar. Also, FYi, 'The Possum' is Geroge Jonse's nickname.

While I agree somewhat with what they say, I happen to subscribe to the school of…there’s room for everybody! It’s NOT an either/or situation!!! I really agree with your comment. I love the old classics to no end but some of the new stuff is pretty darn good. Like all things in life there is a bit of evolution to it whether we like it or not. All have their place and to be honest there are a few artists out there who still record traditional style country music. If we want to see its popularity come back then we need to support those artists and help cause a redirection so to speak. You mentioned Hardy in your comment and I got to see him live at a music festival last year and was blown away by his talent. Plus he's such a fantastic songwriter.

There has been a serious shift in Country Music over the past 5-7 years…and there is a new faction currently which is popular along with the ones you’ve been listening to and loving. But they are really singing about the other current faction that has been totally “popified” and borderline rock in some cases…that the labels and such are pushing in the industry. A major divide…I can’t even listen to half the new stuff…snap-tracks and all sorts of other changes. Fortunately we still have hundreds of great ones for ya Sebs!

Even AJ has put out plenty of the Country music you are indicating. It’s the more recent snap-track trash that is the real issue. Peppy, upbeat, and other more rock/pop isn’t the even the problem. And I don’t even think that King George and AJ would say so. They also don’t expect Country to be the form we had from the 20s-70s. The problem is the overproduced, snap-track type garbage that doesn’t even attempt to relate or connect to Country’s famous “Three chords and the Truth” roots.

These guys are unbeatable. They were calling for people to remember when country had more to say than just drinking and hooking up. In the last verse where they sing that even the Possum has been told to pack up and go back home - Possum was George Jones's nickname, and his performing spot was rescinded on one of the awards shows in favor of a pop artist. Alan, who did perform, in the middle of his own song stopped and switched to George's song that was pulled. Then he walked off stage and out of the building. The music has sold out to the pop side to scoop in younger audiences who haven't been bought up with the traditional legends. This song is their protest.

The first time they performed this song was on the stage at a country music award show. Did you actually stop and just imagine that today? Two of the biggest names in country music singing a song about how the record labels and producers are killing traditional country music. To write a song against Nashville and the record producers saying that it's no longer about talent and traditional instruments while standing on an awards stage in front of them. I think most singers would be too afraid of the repercussions but I think it made them more popular with people like me

In the 80's there was a return to traditional Country music. Therr was a whole lot of traditional singers that came along. Alan and George are two of them. Although Alan came along at the end of the 80's. George Strait made it cool to wear Cowboy hats again. Then as the turn of the century came around Country music started going more, and more pop/rock.

I agree with everything in this song, and i grew up listening to 70s, 80s , and 90s country and even some older stuff here and there. I am a fan of the old school country but we have to remember that what my generation often calls "real country" was just as unwelcome back in the day. I do enjoy SOME of todays country music....mostly the ones who dont see a ton of radio play because they havent sold out. Some of them used to be more mainstream til this shift began. And some still are but i probably enjoyed some of their earlier songs more than what they are putting out today.

I remembered when they sang this on tv. Hank Williams, Merle Haggard and George Jones, 3 of the greatest mentioned in this song. If y'all get a chance, react to a Merle Haggard song. "Mama Tried" and "I think I'll Just stay here and drink" are my favorites, but they're all good. A little bit on his background, He was sent to San Quintin prison in 1957 for petty crimes and was out in 2 1/2 years and in 1972, he received a full pardon from then California governor Ronald Reagan. How glad are us country music fans to have heard his songs.

I think it's less about the rock and pop elements of the newer country music, but the loss of the powerful, substantive lyrics. The "outlaw" movement in the seventies rejected the extremely traditional country style of the sixties and incorporated elements of rock and blues, and those singers and their songs are country classics. But while the sound was different, the substance was there. There was a message. Powerful themes. There is a place for lighthearted, fun songs, but the corporate side of the music industry can lose sight of the substance in the music in favor of a bunch of singers with all the same sound, all the same look, and no real message. There is room for a lot of different sounds and influences in country music as long as it has heart and soul and doesn't crowd out the rest of the various styles. 😊

They were trying to "POP" the country sound, removing fiddles and steel guitars. The Academy snubbed George Jones (The Possum) and wouldnt let him perform his song at the ACMs. Alan started his so g and switched to George's song!! This is a literal protest against the whole country music radio and recornding industry....... The powers that be wanted SHOWIER artists an true talent was being ignored

I. LOVE. COUNTRY. MUSIC. !!! There may be a song or artist here or there that I don’t care for but that’s why they make volume controls and power buttons! It’s like parents having a new baby. You don’t love your other kids any less, your love just grows exponentially to love the new one in it’s own right. Having said that, I do stand firmly with Alan and George’s statement about the ‘industry’s’ motives and practices. You can’t disrespect those who blazed the trail just for a buck but they do it every day. Not a big fan of the ACM or the CMA. Thankfully there are those who will never let tradition die! 🎶♥️🎶♥️🎶♥️🎶

Nothing wrong with change, BUT you can't forget who you are! Actually Outlaw Country was invented as a protest to the rigidity of the "Nashville Sound" 50+ years ago. Outlaw Country is anything but traditional. That's why Bocephus sings, "I am very proud of my daddy's name. Although his kind of music and mine ain't exactly the same."

Your comment describes what I was wanting to comment. I love Waylon Jennings, but he wasn't exactly traditional himself. He, Willie, Johnny and Kris together were not really traditional either, so the changes being made to traditional country were happening even back then. I like the traditional country music the best, but I still love Waylon and the Highway Men. But beyond that, the more traditional I can get it, the better. The big thing is whether or not I can hear the fiddles, the acoustic guitar and steel guitar. If you get too many electric guitars in there, the fiddles, acoustic guitar and steel guitars get drowned out. I can handle an electric guitar if it isn't drowning out the fiddles, acoustic and steel.

Cma is the issue. Once Viacom bought cmt country music went away. Change happens, it’s changed since Ernie ford to Alan Jackson but the basics have been the same until the mid 90’s and it’s gotten worse
