SEC Soccer Photography • Canon EOS R6 • 100-500 • 70-200

I go to the Regal Soccer Stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee to photograph The University of Tennessee as they play a match against the University of Georgia. I used my Canon R6 and the 100-500 and 70-200 lenses. It was a great match and as the sun went down that night I experienced a sunset as beautiful as any I've ever seen. I also demonstrate the rolling shutter of the EOS R6 and why I use the mechanical shutter for soccer.
Tennessee went on to win the South Eastern Conference Tournament a few weeks after this match.

Great video Phil, myself I liked the 70-200 shots but that is me. I like the expanse it gave you. Found interesting the rolling shutter examples at the end. Might have to see how the Z6ii works in that respect. 👌

Thanks, Ron. I like the results from both lenses but the 70-200 has that little extra bit of beauty. I agree. I like to use the 100-500 for the range, soccer fields are really big! I'm pretty sure the R6 sensor is faster than the Z6II so there will almost certainly be even more distortion from the Z6II. But that's ok. Thats why they still put mechanical shutters in these modern cameras. I was surprised when they did not put a mechanical shutter in the new Z9. That's pretty amazing to me!

Thanks, Adrian! I really like both of those lenses equally. They each have their uses and have things that they can do that the other one can't do. That was an "Adrian Alford" sunset! :)

Thank you! I like to use the 100-500 for larger wildlife, like Deer, Elk, or Bears. For small birds, I still prefer my crazy 800mm f/11 lens.

I thought good pictures and then after I attempted a high school girls soccer match I immediately revised my thinking from good pictures to GREAT pictures. Maybe a difference between high school and college, I don't know, but you got a lot more vertical leaps than I did. I grabbed your settings and using the same gear as you, I got some incredibly average photos. I shot about 1500 images and ended up with maybe a dozen that were interesting. How many images did you shoot to yield what you've shown here?

Thank you. I don't recall the exact number but shooting 2000 during a match is not uncommon and that is in 12 frames per second mode, not 20. Definitely want to shoot many and share few when working a soccer match. I'd say these SEC College players are a little more active and likely to be airborne than the athletes at a typical High School match.

Thank you! I used face and Eye detect autofocus on my main focus button. occasionally, If the camera was choosing the wrong player for my needs, I would use my second focus button which I had set for single point.
