I've been lucky enough to attend some of Peter Read Miller's Sports Photography Workshops and recommend them to anyone. A great experience shooting from the field at professional venues next to pros from AP, Getty, USA Today and others. Plus, the classroom instruction and photo critiques with Peter are a tremendous learning experience. You get the benefit of his experience having shot hundreds of SI covers and covered many Olympic games. You will become a better sports photographer and those skills will make you a better photographer in general. Thanks to these workshops I'm getting better jobs and taking better photos.

Thank you sir, very informative. Never thought about a remote, clever. I use a Canon EF 35-350L and a 5D classic. I just saved up and bought a 5Dnmark iv. I suppose I can save up and get something used that I can remote with my EF 35 f2. I am not a pro but I get some nice images. I got some beautiful fall foliage as back drop last weekend. I was using my EOS1 and Portra 800 in 2019. I just started using digital and will visit your library and website. I did watch your video this morning on settings, very helpful. I have kind of followed you throughout the years (I'm not a creep) and have always admired your art. I love your composition and excellence. I was a painter prior to photography but my hands just do not cooperate any more for that. Anyway, thank you for the direction on shooting soccer and giving me confidence on these complex digital menus. Give me a center point and let me pump....lol

I've shot kids soccer for a lot of years now, and the only thing I can think of that I found that Peter didn't mention is to position yourself with the sun at your back if you can, so that they are running towards you into the sun. Full sun on the players face will make for a much better shot than a face lost in shadow.

cadmus777 do you happen to have any advice for a bird photographer to get into shooting action sports? I’m pretty good at tracking action and always thought about doing high school or college sports. I realize it’s very demanding on the body and a lot of work involved. I’m just curious how you get started doing it? Do you reach out to the high school directly and ask them permission to shoot the games and then just sell online jpeg to the parents, family? Does the high school pay you to shoot, or do you just shoot for free and only make money selling digital or physical prints? Thanks for any advice you have.

all good stuff. shooting from goal line makes it easier to use long lenses at the angle of view is smaller than on sidelines.

Question, why is the red ribbon placed on the target, what does it mean or what is it for?
@brianvnc
@brianvnc 5 жыл бұрын
I think you meant to say to shoot in Manual mode with those settings. If you set your camera to Aperture Priority, the camera automatically selects the shutter speed. So if your lens widest aperture is f/4 at night, I assure you the shutter speed will be slower than 1/1000th.

I'm sure all his gear is maxed at 2.8. 2.8 with big stadium lights can get you closer to 1000.

Hi Peter, i have a 70-200mm f/2.8. But sometimes i find it not enough. Since you mentioned using an extender is an option, will it affect how fast it focuses the subject? Thank you!
@nichtfurdich3502
@nichtfurdich3502 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it will affect the speed of your focus, since u lose a stop of light. Since this comment is already 9 months old, i guess you already know the answer by now 😅 I just got me a 70-200 f2.8 in combination with a Canon 800D (apsc) before that I used a 55-250mm f4-f5.6 so i might also need a teleconverter. But i don't know yet, since the low league football has off season here in germany. Can't wait to use the lens 😅

When your child is a defender, a 70-200 still does not reach them to get them facing the camera. Any suggestions for this scenerio?
@boostedmaniac

lorax2000 [alann] you might have to move up the side line some. I’ve found shooting near the goal line works well for me to get faces. I almost always crop all my images with a 70-200.

Get close to midfield if you want to shoot defenders. I shoot for my kids school teams and club teams and roam the sidelines (staying on our team's attacking 1/2).

If your kid is a defender and he's the only thing you want to capture, then standing on the opposite end of the pitch won't help much, even if you have a long lens, I'd probably go up the field a bit, but not all the way. I have a video on my channel talking about shooting football (soccer), check it out, hopefully it helps you.
