I will be planing and truing 7" x 9" timbers for the 2nd floor joists, setting the joists in the pockets, and installing temporary flooring to support a new shorter hoist.

Good Evening, Hope your day is going well. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your video series on building a dovetail log cabin. My wife and I are making plans to do just that. I noticed on a couple of your videos there appeared to be what looked like sheet metal on top of certain features (e.g. the pylons where you set the sills, the tops of the second floor joists, etc.). I wondered if you could describe the purpose for each of those? Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. God bless.
@TheBeardedCarpenter
@TheBeardedCarpenter 3 жыл бұрын
Howdy Bill- the metal sheeting on top of the second floor joists is just temporary protection from water dripping between the temporary floor boards. It helps keep the timbers from having streaks on the sides. The flashing on the piers keeps the sill logs from wicking moisture from the concrete piers. Thank you so much for watching the videos. Take care and God bless you

Sir, you did not talk about the metal sheet that you placed on top of the joists, on top of which you put the second floor flooring. What metal is that? How thick are they? Is it the same metal and thickness as what was used below the sill logs? I also saw the metal sheets were curved upwards at the ends. Secondly, the last joist that you put in, had a pipe-like groove cut into one of its ends. Could you please explain that? Regards.
@TheBeardedCarpenter
@TheBeardedCarpenter 4 жыл бұрын
AS Howdy- the metal is just cheap aluminum flashing that will keep the rain water from making streaks down the sides between the temporary floor. I just pulled the metal back from the end of the joists so I could set the log that is over them. God bless you
@TheBeardedCarpenter
@TheBeardedCarpenter 4 жыл бұрын
AS The groove on the end of the joist is because it was at an electrical hole drilled through the wall log. Blessings to you

Do the wall logs supporting the floor joists need additional bracing when the joist sits above a window?
@TheBeardedCarpenter
@TheBeardedCarpenter 3 жыл бұрын
Howdy JT- I put blocking in the logs so weight can be transferred down. There is a substantial amount of wood left under the joists and on the outside I have the full height of the log so it is still really strong. Good question by the way. Thank you so much for watching the video. God bless you

At about the 9:56-min mark you mentioned the chamfered joists... From what I understand, that originated in timber frame construction because sharp corners are more likely to catch fire.

Dear Sir, greetings of the day. When you fix the length of the joist that goes into the joist pocket as 3", is it because the total pocketed length of any joist is then 6", the thickness of the logs? Or is it just a number that you feel is adequate to withstand any load, be it on the main floor or loft floor? Secondly, how do you arrive at the dimensions of the joist as 7" by 9"? Warm regards.
@TheBeardedCarpenter
@TheBeardedCarpenter 4 жыл бұрын
AS Howdy AS- the the depth of the joist pockets are just 1/4” more than how much the joists will extend into the log. I feel three inches is adequate for carrying the load on them. There is enough wood left on the log under the joists and the full height of the log on the outside to not weaken the log from being able to do what is asked of it. A 6”x8” joist would have been strong enough to carry the second floor load but since l had some hefty looking logs in the walls l chose to go a bit bigger with them to keep the proportions equal with each other. I do a lot of over kill on timbers to keep everything asthectically pleasing and to keep things correct proportionally. Hope this helps you. I appreciate your questions and I hope I’m able to clarify things for you. God bless you
@AS-xo3lk
@AS-xo3lk 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheBeardedCarpenter Thank you for the encouragement Sir. I have a desire to understand things that I like, down to the last detail. And I feel in you I have found a person who has a streak of perfectionism. Hence I ask. I do not always understand everything that you say but that is understandable given your vast experience as opposed to I, whose sole carpentry exposure thus far has been to spike a few nails into doors to hang clothes from. Nevertheless your patience with the questions is beyond commendable. Warm regards.
@AS-xo3lk
@AS-xo3lk 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheBeardedCarpenter Thank you Sir. When you say the depth of the joist pocket is 1/4" more than how much the joists will extend into them, do you mean that each joist pocket is 3 and 1/4" long? As a sample, how deep (the dimension along the height of the floor log) will the joist pocket be on average? Regards.
@TheBeardedCarpenter
@TheBeardedCarpenter 4 жыл бұрын
AS Howdy AS- just now found this. My phone didn’t give me a notification. Sorry. The depth of the pocket is from the inside face of the log to the back side of the cut out. The height of the joists in the log is taken from the center line. I can go either above or below the center line depending on how tall the joists are. Working from an established center line makes it possible to use logs that aren’t exactly straight or maybe a little bit wider or narrower depending on the individual log. I am able to use the natural shapes of the logs and when the cabin is chinked each log shows it’s own personality. I do appreciate your questions and hope someday you will be able to build your own log cabin. God bless you

From a professor of video and editing: You need to turn your microphone higher on the DB meter… -47db as an example. I can barley hear your audio because you’ve turned it down due to the over modulation of the audio. Turning down over modulated audio won’t fix it. I assume you have the Rode ‘Filmmaker” lavelier microphone. In the setting output menu, turning it to a lower number makes it over modulated. Tuen it to a higher number and it will be better. I know it sounds odd,, but trust me….., good luck, because I can’t hear this video due to the low levels and over modulation.

all iknow Howdy- there has been an audio problem for some people. Not sure what happened but we’re working to figure out what it is. This is the first time there has been a problem. I apologize for it. Have you tried watching it on a computer? Hopefully we can get it fixed. God bless you

I could only hear background noise with my 1 ear - Bluetooth earbud. I switched to my 2 ear wrap around the neck earbuds and sound was perfect.

Weird sound heard like background noises. Who knows why. I restarted my phone and made sure the KZbin app was up to date. Restarted my phone. Still the same. Using an Android here. Crazy Android.

Eric Johnson Howdy Eric- not sure what happened to the audio- my son in-law is talking to a professional video editor to figure out what happened. I’m pretty ignorant on such things and have to leave it to someone else. I apologize for the audio. Hopefully it won’t happen again. Have a great 4th. God bless you

@@TheBeardedCarpenter I don't know much about those things as well but my guess was something was crazy when you added the voice over. But for the life of me I wouldn't think you would change settings mid video. Something was definitely weird. Stay safe my friend. I truly appreciate your trying to educate us in how to do things. Thank you so much.

May I ask what device you are watching from? We are trying to figure out why it’s working for some and not for others.

The Bearded Carpenter I was just watching from my iPhone. The sound came on a little more than halfway through. I just rewatched it on my friend’s TV, and it was fine all the way.

Howdy Richard- I apologize for you not being able to hear it. We had a video once before that had an issue with audio. Some people heard it fine and some didn’t. Hopefully it will be corrected. Thank you for watching. God bless you
