As a Cornish tradesman, I can say that these days, it's not so much second homes. It's gone way beyond that now. Those buying up the seaside town and countryside properties in Cornwall are large hispitalty and financial investment firms, not individuals who've done OK. Done a lot of work for buyers, sellers and agents round here over the years. Dealing with an individual/owner or family where these sorts of properties are concerned is increasingly rare. Adding this comment as, you need to understand a problem to stand a chance of fixing it. "Second homes" is now misunderstanding the problem. More insidious than that now. Great video though. 👍

St Ives is still nice and as much as I enjoy a night out in St Ives, it gets wild during the summer, reminds me of Ibiza and then during the Winter months it does get quieter. Is a shame to see houses sitting empty being owned by big companies, I think they should do more, perhaps charge a town tax to these big companies who buy up houses for hospitality, they could then put the money back into helping younger people looking to get into proper work and own their own homes. I live in Hayle down the road, is really nice but during the summer it takes ages to get from one side of town to the other due to traffic.

It was along exhausting search to find a home we could afford, and in the end we had to settle for a small bungalow in a tiny hamlet. House prices are horrendous here, and now half a million wont get you much. We are so lucky to have one home, any one with two is just taking the piss, it makes me fucking angry that so many places are taken over by the wealthy, time for a peasants revolt i think. @Sh.tPilot9 күн бұрын
To get a drone out of a tree, invest in some paracord, you can buy 100-200m of it for like 10 quid, and perhaps something like a carabiner that climbers use. When you wrap the paracord up it weighs practically nothing and takes up almost no space. But what you can do is tie the carabiner to the paracord and use like a spinning around motion to throw the paracord over a branch up high and use it to shake the tree. It's much better than using pinecones to hit the drone. The only problem is, most of those dji drones when they crash from that high, you'll probably break the shell or hopefully not, the arm and then you'll have to repair it.

I don’t have a problem with people owning holiday cabins which are rented out but family homes… no. @PopularesVox12 күн бұрын
And in the North as many empty decaying ones. We don't have a housing shortage, but a lack of public investment in housing and local communities and an economy driven by the property market, in which the building of new homes benefits both developers and the banks. It's also a key factor behind not stemming a population increase. Housing is too expensive.

They have ceased to be real settlements lived in by real people - its like visiting a museum, except that you aren't allowed in.

@@antonycharnock2993 I was particularly thinking of Linton in Wharfedale and Keld and Muker in Swaledale, which seem to be 'dead' villages, but you are right about Staithes - I remember going there over 20 years ago on a Saturday morning in August, and the streets were packed with cars being loaded up as holidaymakers vacated their holiday cottages. Excellent video 👌Spot on in so many respects. Speaking from a personal perspective as I live full time in one of the posh villages very close to Polzeath. Moved here as my partner is from these parts and wanted to return ‘home’ beautiful coast line beaches moors etc but communities are decimated as Cornish grandparents sold properties to the 2nd home owners / holiday lets which are owned by high end wealth individuals but mostly Off shore companies / Corporations. As a working professional who has lived and worked in many countries around the world I was able to afford ‘one of the posher houses’ The prices in most of the hospitality sectors are eye watering compared to even major cities they mostly cater to the tourist industry making it unaffordable to locals or simply close in the winter like a ghost towns. Spot a house in Rock with the lights on during the winter months! The 2nd home Council Tax won’t even touch the sides of these property owners. I'd love to see you check out Gillingham in Dorset - an ugly duckling of a town. It's quite a pleasant place generally (definitely not posh though!), but the town centre is absolutely atrocious. There are so many boarded up shops and empty buildings, not least a derelict co-op that caught fire 15 years ago and has since been left to decay. Don’t know how you police that and it’s obviously too late for some places. The crooked councils would probably syphon off this too.
@bordersw123911 күн бұрын
They already do - stamp duty on that would be £62.5K rather than £25K if it was your main home. April will see a doubling of council tax for 2nd homeowners.

I don't think stamp duty is a good tax in general as it puts people off moving house which leaves lots of older people in 4/5 bedroom houses only using 1 bedroom, but yeh it makes sense on 2nd homes

Bigger stamp duty will only go straight to the Starmer immigrant fund, nowhere else.

@ Yeah, unfortunately it will. My point was it’d be nice if it went into the local economy.

Used to go camping in Cornwall years ago before Gevor tin mine shut, (I was going to try to apply for a job at Gevor on my next visit). At that time, Cornwall was great place to visit. The Local were just starting to complain about outsiders moving in, plus a lot of unemployment after the mines closed. Polperro was a great place to visit especially the Blue Peter Inn. At that time, you could park just a short walk away. Cornwall’s biggest mistake was not getting independents from the rest of England.😁

Ask yourself one question, it’s not the locals who have sold their homes to the highest bidder, then complain that their children can’t afford to by a home in their town. If the locals feel that there are to many second homes in their town, stop selling their homes to the highest bidder and give them to their children then.

That's true. Where I live, it's common knowledge. 😂 The Cornish can be two-faced gits at times. I should know, I'm cornish. 😂

What a brilliant episode you covered so much and all well put across. When did an average wage not give you the opportunity to get on the housing market? And what happens next ?Generation rent will retire at some point and with a limited pension for most who cover the rent ? I fear we are sleep walking into a real problem.

As someone born and brought up in Cornwall and still live here, I wouldn't ever come here for a holiday. It puzzles me why anyone would want to come here, it's rubbish weather and it's an utter rip off. What people pay for sh-1-t holiday accommodation is bonkers.

Blame the greedy locals who sold them in the first place !
@Hali8811 күн бұрын
I don't blame them, I wouldn't want to live in a little village 40 mins from the nearest small town and hours from any real city with no jobs except crappy tourist related ones

Greed >? I think you will find that it was the only option many of them had that didn't put them on the streets !

They blame the English for taking their homes, but there are plenty of Cornish, born and bred, who have a few properties on the go. Just visit some fishing villages. Down with the English up with the Cornish.£ 😂😂😂£🎉

Its a great shame that local Cornish people cannot afford to live in thier own county thanks to greedy second home oeners mainly from London .Many traditional once working class cottages are brought as holiday homes have thier original featires ripped out of them and the character is lost for ever ,look what theve done in St lves ,the place has become a building site ,and why does the council allow this ?that what l would like to know

Sorry about the drone but I really look forward to these videos (I live in Cornwall and agree with everything you said). Keep the faith and don't give up! The second home issue is a well known problem and needs to be highlighted and, as you said, the 100% council tax will do f-all!

Thanks for that I think many of your viewers really appreciate the efforts you make. The whole drone misery was quite entertaining, I was with my brother when his drone dropped out of the sky into a tree, when we went to get it the farmer ran out shouting "get off my land", no idea how but he complained to the drone supplier who sent him another. As for your political analysis at the end - well I would say entirely justified. Keep up the great work. ( PS when you run out of Posh and Turd Towns do "Just Towns" you could do an area say Cheshire in a couple of days)

Loved this, I've been to all these towns and your trip to Polperro made me laugh out loud 😆 I totally agree with your views on second homes, l live in N Devon where the situation is very similar to Cornwall - half a school bus now instead of three because no kids here any more, no shops etc. There should be a limit on each town, ie no more than 10% as second homes

29:31 Sadly The UK is far from the only country that idolizes the wrong sort of people. While I agree with you in regards that China talks about and values its Engineers more than the UK, they also have their own share of degenerates. Just so you know that Tiktok, which is one of the worst things to ever exist, originates from China, where it is referred to as Douyin. In other words, idolizing the wrong sort of people is not just a UK Problem, but also a global problem. PS Welcome back. I feel Sorry for what happened with the drone. I hope that you can get a new one soon.👍

Great videos good sir - any chance you'll do videos on the in between of turdtowns and posh towns like the mid tier ones ? Reviews on any lesser known towns is worth a watch to me
@Turdtowns4 күн бұрын
Yes when I started this channel I wanted to cover multiple angles. The issue is there isn’t really a whole lot of data to focus on each town individually other than if it’s rough and the house prices. But I like the idea of affordable but good places to live. I already have a list drawn up for Somerset 😊
