Today on Turdtowns it's an episode of Posh Towns. This is the show where we visit the eight most expensive towns and villages in a County based on house prices. Devon is having a housing crisis with more second home owners than council properties. In some towns as much as 60% of properties are Air BnB and holiday rental. This is destroying the communities and leaving winter ghost towns. Many of these buyers come from London who have big wallets.
Do you think second home owners should be banned or taxed more? Do we have a god given right to live in the town we grew up in?
Watch this video and let me know your thoughts!

Next turd towns should be North Wales - Rhyl, Flint, Connah's Quay, Colwyn Bay, Bangor, etc. I live in NW and there are many beautiful places but Rhyl could dominate an episode by itself, just don't bring your swanky Citroen.

I was in Rhyl for a day in 1994. It was a dump, with boarded up shops everywhere. Welsh people ask me if I've ever been to Wales, and I mention being in Rhyl. The reply is always the same... "Rhyl's not Wales" they exclaim, "Rhyl's an embarrassment!"

Great video Mr Towns! We absolutely LOVE Woolacombe. We live is Stoke, a TurdTown in the true sense of the word, but leave our caravan in Woolacombe over the summer and spend at least 6 weeks of the year down there (before dragging the van back to Turd Central for the winter). We're not at all surprised by the average house price, as the stock is dominated by large properties with a sea view. There are a fair few family homes set back, but a 3-bed town house will still set you back £450k, which would buy you a 6-bed detached home in Stoke. We like to go out of season, and we hear a lot of the locals moaning about the tourists, having returned after letting their homes for the summer! Let's face it, they wouldn't be there without us... co-existence and respect is the key, and thankfully, Woolacombe pulls it off admirably. I'd live there if I could afford it 🙂

Come to Stoke on Trent for the next turd towns, the city could be an episode all to itself with the 6 towns (although Longton is starting to improve) and there are other smaller towns/villages within Stoke that could feature too such as Abbey Hulton, Blurton, Chell, Northwood and Smallthorne. Could do a few around Newcastle-under-Lyme as well like Silverdale and Chesterton.

Salcombe is well overrated exactly as you say - but there are some fantastic Devon towns and villages that are actually reasonably cheap to buy a house - Lynton and Lynmouth are the ones that spring to mind first - I reckon you can get a nice house there for 350 to 400k, and kennels are roomy too. I've been for my morning walkies on Woolacombe beach loads of times and the beach is lovely, but the village kind of doesn't really exist - you're better off up the hill in Mortehoe. On Dartmoor, Widecombe (no Ann won't be there so don't worry) is cheaper than Lustleigh and has much more stunning views arriving into it from any direction. Basically the south coast is over-touristy, and some of the crap towns on the north coast, although crap and cheap, are really quite fun - Ilfracombe and Combe Martin. I go to Devon every year and when I go to the posh towns I always make sure to take a crap outside the most expensive house I pass by and run off so my owner has to chase me and doesn't have time to clear up the poop. Woof!

I agree with you that there's always a lot of comments on KZbin that the whole of the UK is struggling but that's utter nonsense... Those people are in a bubble... Me and my wife go to a new city, town or village in the UK each weekend and there's an absolute tonne of towns that are thriving... Wether you like it or not, middle-class towns are doing well and working-class towns not so much... I could name hundreds of towns in the UK that are amazing and would blow the average person's mind if they visited there!... Sometimes you can get a thriving middle-class town that is just 10 miles away from a rundown working-class town and even though they are geographically close, they are figuratively worlds apart... Residents in those two locations think that most of the UK is like where they reside and haven't a clue what it's like in each other's town either!... If you dropped a person from one of these rundown towns into a wealthier thriving town, their eyes would pop out lol... I personally know a lot of working-class people that don't even know this other world in the UK exists and they do not travel out of their own town unless it is to a similar town or city... They haven't a clue that there's hundreds of nice towns, villages and rural locations just a short drive from their homes!

I know why Bigbury and Thurlestone are on this list - The coast there is stunning. I live next to Lustleigh - Beautiful chocolate box town that's like stepping back in time, it's also no wonder that its on this list, but it's not as isolated as you'd think. The moor and many touristy areas are pretty much on its doorstep. Moretonhampstead and Bovey Tracy are both a stones throwaway in either direction, even if the road is a bit pants. If you're a cyclist, you've got the Wray Trail running right through the town, following the path of the old railway. There's even a big department store (Trago Mills) that takes about 20-30ish minutes to cycle to from Lustleigh which is really easy to get to, for those inclined and know how.

It is absolutely shocking to know there are places where almost half the houses are second homes. We have similar problems in the Scottish Highlands and some of the islands, but I don't think it's that bad, as yet... I suspect you're right in your assertion that, if you can afford an expensive second home in the nicer parts of Devon, you can also afford the council tax increases; but clearly there does need to be some regulation that limits their availability. It's really difficult to know what the answer is to what can be done to help local young people join the property market in such places, where is often just no base-level housing available, at all. Really, you need some housing that is available to rent and perhaps buy into after a few years - given that if you don't have a higher London income and don't inherit any property, you're unlikely to be able to afford outright ownership until your old age. As you discovered during your recent trip to Co. Durham, there really are no areas in Southern England that come anywhere close to the levels of turdiness that are commonly found in the North of England, Wales and Scotland. That's not to say there aren't poorer areas in the south - rather, that their poverty is on a wholly different level, save perhaps for a few areas within the larger cities... You also have the disadvantage of living as far away from all of these places as is possible to be, in Cornwall! I wonder, therefore, if you've considered doing residential areas of cities such as Plymouth or Bristol? Alternatively, you might compare commuter towns of such places, say within a 30-mile radius, and score them on such facilities as public transport availabilty, or how long it takes to drive to work in the city; and what kinds of facilities are available locally, such as shops, entertainment venues, sports centres, swimming pools and schools. As a Scot, I'd love to see you apply your traditional model to the likes of Inverclyde (Greenock, Gourock, Port Glasgow, Wemyss Bay, Inverkip, Kilmacolm); East Ayrshire (Kilmarnock, Stewarton, Darvel, Hurlford, Cumnock, Auchinleck, Mauchline, Galston, Drongan); North Lanarkshire (Airdrie, Coatbridge, Cumbernauld, Kilsyth, Motherwell, Wishaw, Chapelhall, Bellshill, Viewpark, Shotts, Stepps); West Lothian (Whitburn, West Calder, East Calder, Polbeth, Blackburn, Livingston, Bathgate, Armadale, Broxburn, Fauldhouse, Winchburgh, Linlithgow.); and indeed you could probably manage to film several of these on one trip; and maybe also a couple of Posh town videos such as East Lothian (Haddington, Dunbar, East Linton, North Berwick, Gifford, Gullane, Cockenzie & Port Seton, Prestonpans, Musselburgh, Tranent, Ormiston, Macmerry, Longniddry, Pencaitland;) and, the Scottish Borders (Melrose, Galashiels, Earlston, Duns, Eyemouth, Kelso, Jedburgh, Selkirk, Peebles, Hawick). You might even manage some Lancashire or Staffordshire too, if you fancied it!

I live in the south hams and avoid these places at all costs. Still visit Bigbury on occasion out of holiday season. Also a huge fan of Mazda, own a skyactiv 3 and a 1993 Eunos Roadster.👍

8:39 - I'm going to recommend that hotel to the home office for housing our... "undocumented dreamers". Heheheheh.... this little liberal town in Devon should love that!

Great video, but very coastal centric. I'm surprised not to see Chagford on here. Thats the main haunt of the 'rich and famous'

You'll be happy to know that Devon, Cornwall and Somerset councils are now enforcing something called the Localisation Act 2011, which means you cannot rent or purchase a property there unless you meet the same conditions as wanting social housing -- must have connections, such as relatives locally, a job in the local area, and have a family history there. For my own nomination, I think its time you ventured into the Midlands, especially the East Midlands, around Nottingham, Derby and Leicester. Lots of it is run down, but we also have a number of posh areas. Theres a lot of ex-mining communities (check out the aptly named Coalville, complete with closed colliery in the town centre!) so theres a lot of places to explore.

I used to live in the South Hams, but the slightly less expensive bit inland. Visited most of these places at some point. Agree with your assessment of Bigbury 😅. Salcombe had to be no. 1, but surprised Newton Ferrers or Dartmouth aren't on there. The pub in Lustleigh is very nice. Great video thanks

I’m sure “Right Mold” was brought to us by the same company as “Blonde for Men”. It’s helping all those blonde haired potters get a second home.

Great video. I live on the outskirts of plymouth and can support you on the fact that places like bigbury and Thurlestone are completely dead and souless - even in summer. As for salcombe - i can't stand the place. There is a level of smugness and superiority from those who ho there in the summer and its a ghost town in winter (which i prefer). Countryside around it though is absolutely stunning.

Poor people can't stand places like that. How dare people save up to and contribute to the community and live somewhere nice 😂😂😂

I live in Devon and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Some of the lanes can be "interesting" and very narrow and do seem to go on for miles, especially the one's with grass growing down the middle!

You were so dramatic about Salcombe's P+R carpark :) It's a mere 700 metres walk to the water's edge, a bit hilly but very scenic.

I own a small 2 bed house in Woolacombe, love using it year round as a 2nd home. Only shame is that the town itself is very seasonal, so mostly everything is closed in the winter. But its otherwise beautiful, and great for walking the dogs on the beach
