Well for a planetary invasion the guard use dozens of millions of troops.And if that doesnt go well,hm then there are two options.More troops or exterminatus if the planet is under massive demonic assault and if it is of no worth exterminatus.On the other hand lets say Cadias case there are a billion guarsdmen with hundreds of thousands of vehicles or millions accompanied by titans and space marines.In space there are hundreds of vessels always if not thousands.The republics forces would be a laughing stock in front of this and presumed either a suicide mission or a small vanguard.Litteraly even agri worlds have millions of planetary defence forces.Star wars cant compare to Warhammer40k on scale power or numbers.(Glad to see fellow Warhammer 40k fans here though,have a nice day sir

This is what hooked me to TCW show. The battle sequences were always beautifully animated and combined with the speaker melting sound design made this show unmissable to me. The Battle Of Umbara arc (the one with General Krell) was probably, in design and sound terms, the finest piece of Star Wars I've ever seen. Rebels, although it is improving massively compared to it's early days, just can't compare to this exquisite series.
@dr.boring70227 жыл бұрын
Currently, Rebels doesn't. But hopefully we can get some battle scenes like this. I liked the Battle of Scarif, even though it isn't in Rebels, but Rebels is leading up to it, so hopefully, we could get more battles like that.

If you're looking for scale, "Rebels" will never amount to what Clone Wars did. The Clone Wars was one of the largest wars ever fought in the SW universe, Rebels is the very beginning of the Rebellion, with very limited resources. Hell, Battle of Attalon (and a few others) in "Rebels" is the bigger than all Original Trilogy battles except for Battle of Endor. It makes zero sense for Rebels to have a battles anywhere near in size of TCW battles. Rebels are a group of ragtag fighters with random ships, and not battlegroups of cruisers that hold 490 strike craft and thousands of clones each.

I'm going to answer that 3 years later, but the proton cannons we can see (that shot down a few LAATs) would penetrate very quickly venators shields if in range. We can see this scenario in the Ryloth first ground invasion episode, with acclamators getting melted in a few shots. Granted, venators have better shields but still would be risky to assume. Especially they are enormous targets so the dozens of in range cannons would have no problem getting a hit

Good point, only Y-wings and attack gunships are seen. I would say that the distinction may not be so important in regards to the Y-wing, which seems to remain competitive with dedicated starfighters during dogfights (with shields, two heavy laser cannons and a turreted ion cannon), but also carries bombs. It is a fighter bomber, and good at both :) Despite Y wings being used a lot throughout the Clone Wars official books don't mention Acclamtor's or Venator's carrying any. Official numbers may be a "standard" but malleable. In many cases they may have less of the starfighters listed in the description, but more Y-wings and gunships. At one point the Admiral points out that this is a "planetary scale invasion" and has to refuse to send bomber support when requested to one location, so it's also possible more variety of air-power was present elsewhere in other battles around the planet.
@ph897878 жыл бұрын
I'm basing this on Shadow Squadron. But it appears that the Venators are capable of carrying at least 12 Y-Wings.
@richardched60858 жыл бұрын
By this point in the War V-Wings and the Eta-2 Actis haven't entered service yet and the ARC-170 and the Clone Z-85 Headhunter were just being introduced. So far the Republic Navy only had V-19 Torrents Delta-7B Aethersprites and BTL-B Y-Wings (Plus the Surplus Planetary Defense Fleet Starfighters like the Z-95 Headhunter, R-41 Starchaser, R-22 Spearhead, And the H-60 Tempest)
@Barrobroadcastmaster8 жыл бұрын
I think I remember seeing the statistics on carrier compliment you listed from the old Cross-sections book, unfortunately it's very outdated. The Nimbus starfighters were I think what they called the V-Wings. But you're definitely right about the Y-Wings; those Y's can definitely handle themselves!
@AGH3318 жыл бұрын
Never question military tactics and strategy in The Clone Wars - just gives you a headache. It's all driven by plot. With full space superiority (the Venators seem to be unchallenged over Geonosis) and Acclamators roaming the skies, they could have easily just bombarded the surface and taken out the flak emplacements before landing their troops. The reason events played out like this is because the show's writers wanted heavy casualties and a desperate situation after the landing.
@Yonkage8 жыл бұрын
"1,152,000 clone troopers" seems like it's a lot, but it's really not remotely. The Battle of Normandy involved the landing over over 2 million Allied troops in France.

Yonkage the SW galaxy has trillions of Planets with Billions of people each. you would need 6 Star Destroyers to control Earth! Due to the lack of fighter escort, a small group of fighters (3 or 4), were able to maneuver between gunships and transports and cut through them like a hot knife through butter. Also, when there are air defenses, you first launch reconnaissance flights (with a damn CAP (Combat Air Patrol), then SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defense) or DEAD (D stands for Destruction), then you send in the transports (again, WITH fighter escort). Seems like the second invasion was more like "Leeeeroy Jenkins", than an actual, planned invasion.

That, or the Venators could have just bombarded the region from altitude.

Mik Moen You would still want to follow that up with suppression of air defenses, set up a CAP to secure what air superiority you can, and then send in the ground troops to finish the job. @CountKibblesNBits8 жыл бұрын
This is one of the few times I like the "Canon" explanation. Basically once the empire took over it was fairly easy for them to completely subdue Geonosis due to: -This battle destroying quite a few of the planet's defenses and factories -The shutdown of most of the droid army at the end of the war, which would cause a large blow to available manpower. - The main political and military leader Pogo the Lesser was killed by Vader on Mustafar - And the Fact Palpatine is one Bad motherfucker and gives no fucks about ethics and had the entire planet bombed with biological weapons, committing mass genocide against the Geonosians
@SinerAthin8 жыл бұрын
I'd also like to point out perhaps the most important reason being the fact that Geonosis was alone after the war. They had allies during the Separatist movement, but by the time of the Empire, they were alone. When you consider the absolutely ludicrous size of the Empire, Geonosis was just a tiny bug(no pun intended!) in comparison to that massive behemoth that was the Empire. It's as if the US had invaded Switzerland... except that US was 1000 times bigger as well. Even if it had been in its strongest, Geonosis would just lose due to sheer weight.

@janslosn30197 жыл бұрын
knesrevi fair point, lasers travel at 3*10^8 m/s and go at straight line. so yeah they're accurate af. However seeing from this clip, it is far too slow to be a laser. Therefore I have come to the conclusion that they're not laser but plasma. I'm not going as far as counting the frames to get the exact speed, so I'll assume they have the same speed as modern bullets. Seeing how the gun is manually guided means it's comparable to WW2 AA gun, which has an average hit rate of 0.9%. However the number is even lower in this case since those gun have neither proximity fuse or timed fuse, so they won't explode near an aircraft. So yeah, missiles are more effective as an anti-air counter in this case.

If you mean the space battles, then even if writing is a factor, another fact is the difference between the Clone Wars and the Galactic Civil War. In Clone Wars, both factions are two superpowers with their own federal armies In the Galactic Civil War, or in the era of Rebels before the war officially began, one faction was a Superpower, the Galactic Empire The other is a much smaller faction the Rebel Alliance Rebels is a tale how the Rebellion came to be Not long after the Empire’s founding, Rebel Cells formed in different areas of the Galaxy. To resist Imperial Control Over the nearly 2 decades more Cells was founded, but were all independent of eachother despite their common goal. No Cells have the power or manpower to fight an open War with the Empire, so it’s mostly skirmishes or Guerilla Warfare Raids Even after the Cells came together and became the Rebel Alliance, they still lacked the manpower to openly go to war with the Empire. Then Alderan and Yavin happened which the Galaxy both saw the evil of the Empire and how it’s possible to hurt it. It encouraged mass imperial defections, eventually making the Rebellion more of a Superpower, making the conflict more of a Civil War But the Empire still had the advantage, even as Luke became a symbol of hope. It wasn’t until Endor, The Rebellion became its own superpower and became the New Republic which defeated the Empire later on So Rebels there’s only small skirmishes to be expected, post Endor it became more of a Galactic War

Technical note: the Republic attack force lacked defensive fighters. They had a ground assault group - the gunships and the armor deployment vehicles. They had a bomber group for attacking ground installations. Those two groups did take on Geonosian intercept aircraft, but a dedicated group of escort fighters could have held them off.

@VeeranLegacy8 жыл бұрын
I think orbital bombardment is against the rules of engagement of the Republic, that was a strategy use by the Sith Empire and the Galactic Empire; plus I don't think the Venator-class can do efficient orbital bombardement, it was built more as a star carrier than a true star destroyer.

+dinogames this is a question for Dave Filoni, but from a story point of view my guess is they didn't have The firepower, the Acclamator-class barely act as an anti starfighter frigate, it is closer to a cargo hauler than a true warship and 6 Venator don't do that much damage, from the studio point of view I think it would be to easy and less fun to watch but again it is my personnal thoughts

Ha ha ha ! _"Rebels isn't bad, Clone Wars is just too good."_ You'll have to excuse me for the laugh because i'm enjoying the irony (though i do not disagree with the statement.) For the movies, the community love the original trilogy and hate the pre-logy. But for the show, they love the pre-logy and hate the trilogy. It's kind of funny, really XD But i kind of understand where it's coming from. See, what happened in the movie Trilogy is what's happening in the "prelogy show" and what's happening in the "trilogy show" is what happened in the prelogy : relation between talk/preparation to fight/action. In the movies, the trilogy shows the fight between the alliance and the empire with very little talk or "narrative building up" as to explain the conflict, because the conflict truly already had started and made the movie centered around "how the conflict is waged" and less about the "reasons that lead to the conflict". In the prelogy that was the opposite. The pre-logy movies were centered around the reasons why the republic fell *willingly* into an Empire while the Clone Wars, and all the battles waged in it, were a smoke screen for Palpatine's ascension to power, while in the trilogy, the rebels are fighting against impossible odds to restore that same republic to it's original state before the fall - hey're at a point where talking serves no prupose and only the fighting is left. For the "trilogy show", it's the rebels that are building their strength prior to finally engaging the Empire in open battle (the civil war) and are relying on smuggling, spying and building "alliances" through secret meetings and the usage of diplomacy, while the Empire is standing at a point where it's strength is _actually_ impossible to confront straight on, while in the pre-logy show the war is already well on, with the Clone and Separatists armies fighting on a thousand worlds accross the galaxy. So of course both shows cannot relate in terms of "intensivity of actions", because both are facing very different contexts from each other : "Clone Wars" was an all-out conflict between two sides that were relatively well matched ; ideal for this kind of setup. "Rebels", in the other hand, is an iolated group of dissidents fighting against an Empire _prior_ to the destruction of the Death Star and the subsequent fightings that followed during the Galactic Civil War. In a nutshell it is *normal* that we're not able to see the same kind of fighting we've seen in "Clone Wars" happening in "Rebels", because everything's on a different scale.

The landing on Geonosis is oddly remniscent of the landing on Omaha beach during D-day. There too very little went as planned. They encountered way stronger defences than they planned, many groups landed in the wrong places and practically no primary objectives were achieved in the planned manner. Heavy casualties were sustained but in the end the landing forces won.

Ok, you don't have to be a total history or military tactics pedant to say that this whole sequence is bullshit. The GAR warp in 12 carrier/cruisers into the system without a single enemy warship in sight. They just surprise attacked their way into orbital superiority. If they want to plunge several armor and infantry divisions straight into the heart of the enemy, as apposed to landing them somewhere else and rolling them there, go for it! But they have to smash the Geonosian defenses FIRST. They should have bombarded the enemy emplacements from orbit, then sent a few squadrons of recon fighters and bomber squadrons to mop up anything they missed, then landed their ground troops. I know apposed landings like ANZAC Cove and Omaha Beach are cinematic and exciting, but it makes the Jedi look like hopeless amatuers. If that's what the writers were going for (and they certainly could have gone for it, the Jedi were not trained for this) then they should have gone all the way.
