Great reaction! One of the best pop songs ever written. Funny story, TFF were in the final stages of recording 'Songs From the Big Chair', when Roland Orzabal (sp?) came up with this little two-chord vamp. Their producer heard it, loved it, and encouraged him to develop it into a song. He wasn't very interested, who can blame him, he'd just recorded a very complicated album, but the producer convinced him to give it a shot. Turned out to be one of the defining songs of the '80s and the biggest hit TFF ever had. You just never know when and where lightning will strike. ^_~

Their lyrics "So glad we almost made it, So sad they had to fade it.." That's a jab at the radio industry at the time, that asked them to cut off like 8 seconds of their song, otherwise they'd have to fade it out. Not only is it an awesome song with deep meaning, it goes even deeper with that little Easter Egg lyric they put in. Nobody got to hear the full complete version on the radio back then, they literally did fade it out.

@@blaze1148 No, the lyric literally says fade it. It was a jab at the radio stations that told them their song was a bit too long for their allowed radio time slot, and if they didn't shorten the song then they would have to fade it out early.

05:08 __ You mention, "Dollar forty-five for gas," from back in the 80s. When I was in high school in the mid/late 60s, gas was 25-cents a gallon. I drove a Volkswagen Beetle with a 10-gallon tank. A fill-up was $2.50 and would last a week! ;o)

It’s those first few bars of the intro that hook you into this song which for me personally is possibly thee best pop song ever recorded because you had to be a young person living through this 1980’s decade to appreciate what you were listening to at the time.
@51Dss
@51Dss Жыл бұрын
I think the meaning of the song is that when you're free and able to indulge every whim - flying a glider, riding bikes in the desert, driving a convertible sports car...unburdened with worries about work, illness, politics...you feel like the world is in the palm of your hand. Everybody aspires to be the king of his own kingdom...everybody wants the luxury of time, health, money to live unburdened by worldly things. It is a feel good song - I agree with that sentiment. It is these young guys who were living that kind of lifestyle when they wrote and performed this song. And it was symbolic of the '80s - a decade thought of as a time of greed and over indulgence (somewhat unfairly IMHO). These guys were lov'n life and they were singing about it. Great song - fresh faced young guys enjoying good clean living.

They put out a new album of ALL NEW MUSIC in 2022 and it's incredible. They sound better now than they did in the '80s. The album is called "The Tipping Point," and though the entire album is great, make sure to watch the official videos for "Break The Man," "The Tipping Point," and "Rivers of Mercy" (be prepared to cry for the last one). Also find a live version of My Demons during the 2022 US tour (they went to the UK, too, but the lighting isn't as good). Loved the song, but the stage lighting in the US was mind blowing. Yay for y'all enjoying TFF!!

Tears For Fears are Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal. Curt sings lead vocal on Everybody Rules The World, but Roland sings the majority of their songs. Check out the glorious Woman In Chains which has Roland on lead vocal, the song has become a feminist anthem. Also check out Advice For The Young At Heart with Curt on lead Vocal, or Head Over Heels (Roland) or check out The Tipping Point which was released in 2022 and has both Curt and Roland singing throughout.

Shout is also very good, but for me it's one of those songs that I don't appreciate until I hear it again (does that make sense?) - like, if I am scrolling through my playlist, I'll look at Shout and think "meh", but if I actually PLAY it, then I remember why it's good.
