Completely agree. As both a TFF and Beatles fan,I've never got the link here with the Fabs. Literally, the only thing similar is the brass sound of Penny Lane. The Beatles never recorded anything remotely like this track,anymore than TFF recorded anything like Helter Skelter
@keithosmond573010 ай бұрын
@@normandavidtidiman9918 You guys really can't hear it? It was so obvious to me the first time I heard it that it was an homage to the Beatles. IMO there's never been a more obviously Beatlesque song short of actually ripping off one of their songs.
@normandavidtidiman991810 ай бұрын
@@keithosmond5730 You need to re-read my answer. Tell me one Beatle song this resembles,apart from Penny Lane. There are none.
@keithosmond573010 ай бұрын
@@normandavidtidiman9918 No; there are no COPIES. But the entire vibe is clearly Beatles-inspired. And yes, there are MANy snippets within the song that, while not COPIES, have distinct ECHOES of various Beatles songs (mainly Sgt Pepper / Magical Mystery Tour era). I've never sat down and stripped out each echo to pinpoint the exact song it reminds me of, but they are there. And I'm FAR from alone in hearing it. In fact, I can't comprehend how anyone familiar with the Beatles CAN'T hear it.

Some very of-the-time UK references here. I was 15 in 1989 when this came out and just starting to become aware of politics. "Politician granny with your high ideals, have you no idea of how the majority feels?" is a reference to the then UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher - it proved prophetic as she was outed from power a year later ... "Food goes to waste, so nice to eat, so nice to taste" is a reference to the EEC (forerunner of the EU) butter mountains and milk lakes which were making headlines at the time, and seemed obscene in the light of recent famines in Africa. "Kick out the style, bring back the jam" was a reference to UK mod legend Paul Weller's band The Style Council, which was a very different style to his earlier band The Jam and seemed to reflect 80s slick excess and materialistic attitude much more (at least as far as their image went) and perhaps seemed a far cry from the raw and relateable late 70s/early 80s sound of The Jam. TFF seemed to be communicating their disapproval of their colleague's reinvention of himself and were suggesting he go back to his 'Jam' roots! :)

It’s a great track in its own right but there’s no denying the influence of the Beatles. In particular Sargent Peppers and Magical Mystery Tour. The production has Sir George Martin all over it also. If anyone wanted to get close to the sound of the Beatles these boys did a pretty good job to be fair.

This song paid homage to the Beatles. The song did peaked at the #2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the late summer of 1989. A song like this could have been on the Sargeant Pepper album back in 1967. A banger of a song indeed!!!

This is a very good reaction. You both come across as sincere music lovers. You dig deep into what the songs are about. You will be delighted to know that the same director who directed Michael Jackson's "Leave Me Alone" directed 'Seeds of Love' as well. Both were very expensive and ambitious videos at the time. Just some trivia for you: "Kick out the style, bring the jam is a reference" to two English bands Style Council and The Jam both of which featured Paul Weller (who was known for his social message in his songs in The Jam but later formed another band that was more about look and style rather than substance.). Also "politician granny" is a reference to the British PM, Margaret Thatcher and many in the UK were disillusioned with her power control politics that resulted in shutting down of several factories, industries, etc. Mr. England sowing the seeds of love is again a reference to a well known gardener. The sunflower reference came from a graffiti outside Roland's house in London at the time. It was an emblem for a political party or some kind of a political movement. Also this whole album marked a move towards healing. Their first album was about pain and therapy and second, more outward looking and releasing of pent up feelings on a global scale. Phew!

It is less happy go lucky and more sermon of love. We must put love into the cosmos to receive it. This was a wonderful time for half analog, half digital studios and the recording and mixes from that period. This is a deceptively simple sounding mood with a complex arrangement and chord progression. The guys cutting vocal melodies top off the art. During that time, Seal's first album was a similar masterwork of sound while Michael Jackson had a video with the same cut up visuals. It is a beautiful song from a time where such was still appreciated...

Great review, I really enjoy watching your reviews, T1 looked a bit perplexed through the first part of the song. Tears For Fears are the best band to come out of the 80's, their songs usually have hidden meanings and can be quite political. The line "Politician Granny (Grandmother) with your high ideals, have you no idea how the majority feels" is talking about the British Prime Minister of the time, Margaret Thatcher in the 80's, she divided the country by taking away from the have nots, and giving to the haves. TFF are unique in that both members sing lead vocal, you heard Curt singing Everybody Wants To Rule The World, whilst Seeds Of Love has Roland singing lead. You should check out Woman In Chains with the fabulous Oleta Adams sharing vocals with Roland, and Advice For The Young At Heart which has Curt back on lead vocal. Or you could check out The Tipping Point which the duo released in 2022, both Curt and Roland sing lead throughout, the song is about the death of Roland's wife in 2017.

Maybe their best album. Incredible song - thanks for the reaction! Believe it or not, they're still putting out NEW music! At over 60yo, and they sound as good now as 40 years ago. Check out The Tipping Point - My Demons, and for a good cry at current events, Rivers of Mercy. Another good one of theirs from "back then" is Woman in Chains. Would love to see a reaction to that. Also very appropriate for today. Two bits of trivia: "Politician Granny with your high ideals..." is referring to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher of the 1980s. And the line about "kick out the Style/bring back the Jam" is about musician Paul Weller (read up on it if you're interested). And the lady who floats above Roland is his now-deceased wife. Roland has been remarried, but it was very recent (2017). Just thought those are odd enough lines, you might not know their meaning. "Easter eggs" as it were.

It was your subconscious interpreting it despite the uplifted tune going on behind the words. That's just my thoughts. Also i like tears for fears but that one idk just never got into it. Have you guys listened to "MAD WORLD" by them? If not i highly recommend. I really think youll both dig it. Honestly I'd be surprised if you didn't. It could've been written about current times. The relevance ...well you'll see. Thanks for your reviews. There’s a problem with this… at the end of the 80’s the dawn of the 90’s there was a great expectation of massive changes to come. The Berlin Wall fell and the Soviet Union collapsed. Songs like this and “Right Here, Right Now” by Jesus Jones sung of an optimistic view. 1990’s film “Flashback” about aged hippies discovering the present time has Dennis Hopper as Huey Walker predict… “Once we get outta the 80's, the 90's are going to make the 60's look like the 50’s.” But it never happened. Even with a massive war - like Gulf War One… there was no ‘peace’ movement like there was during the Vietnam War My generation just failed. We became sullen and introspective and had songs like “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” declare “Despite all my rage I’m still just a rat in a cage…”
