What I love about the latest Dune movies is just how mundane the sci-fi stuff is depicted. We have massive spaceships and interplanetary jihads, but they're treated as just normal by the characters, which helps highlight the human drama at the heart of the story.

For me, the best non-animated show of the year was also the one I thought I'd care about the least: The Penguin It has no right being as beautifully shot and engaging as it is! It lives up to the hype and then some!

I forgot that technically, Frieren is a September 2023 show, it just ended in March 2024. Makes sense for Dandadan to be the one to fight Arcane, even if it's technically just halfway through the TV run.

I was definitely about to get big mad until I remembered this. Not that I dislike Dandadan, I absolutely love it, but given the option between it and Frieren I'll take Frieren 99 times out of 100.

Personally my favourite movie of the year is the short anime movie "look back" it's from the author of chainsaw man. The manga was great, a really touching story of two friends, but seeing it come to life on a screen, with movement, colour and a stunning soundtrack while looking exactly like fujimoto's art style was even better. I cried a dozen times at the movie and it's soundtrack, it really is that good

About Dandadan, because of all the talk about it I read through the manga without watching the anime and am caught up with the weekly releases. The flashback/backstory sequences are some of the most impactful moments I have read in recently, they are stand outs in a series where everyone seems to be struggling to cope with their current problems. I have been so close to crying over some characters stories that I can't really explain it, the author just knows how to hit me where it hurts. While I may watch it sooner rather then later, I know I will need to own a physical copy of it.

Speaking about popcorn, I recently figured out a tasty mashed potatos recipie that uses kewpie mayo, olive oil, dried onions, toasted sesame seeds, chili powder, and toasted then crushed sichuan peppercorns (the cream/butter gets replaced with the mayo and olive oil). If you add too much to the mash and dry it out into a crust, you can crush or blend it into a nice flavor powder that went pretty well as a seasoning for popcorn (among other things).

For series, I think it was Go Go Loser Ranger. That one is a very VERY personal sort of story, as you have to be into both the odd story of characterizing a foot soldier of an evil army, and into the tropes of the Sentai/Power Rangers genre type it's actually set in the universe of. It reminds me of Chroma Squad, and in all the right ways. The anime is better than the manga even, due to being able to cut some of the bloat of that one's run, which had a tendency to run long on some arcs. That being said, I can see others not getting into it, so I'll also say I quite enjoy Lego Ninjago: Dragon Rising season 2. It is an interesting take on the story arc style, and even calls into question what makes a villain, without breaking the conventions of a children's cartoon, allowing the viewer to understand someone making a bad call, simply because their information is limited. If you haven't seen the series yet, it's one of the few series that try to be a sequel that understand you need to put space between the epic opening of your new series, while also preserving the good vibes of the happy ending of the original series. It helps too that it IS the same team behind a lot of it, and Ninjago was weirdly continuity driven, without hitting continuity lockout, something this series has kept up with strangely well.

wait, you're saying Dune wasn't workshopped? They homogenized the vast majority of the politics, culture, and religion. Don't get me wrong, the cinematography is a work of art, but the Syfy miniseries is still the closest to the book.

Jentry Chau vs the Underworld on Netflix is my favorite show. It came out at the beginning of December 2024 and no one is talking about it! It's under the kids section of Netflix for some reason even though the show is pretty horrific at many points. That's probably why no one noticed it. What a shame!

I highly recommend the Austrian-German television crime drama series "Pagan Peak" (Der Pass). The plot is exciting, full of twists, dark atmosphere and deep characters. Close to the German-Austrian border, two detectives are sent to investigate a dead body in the Alps and hunt a serial killer who is using a Krampus mask as a disguise. As they dig deeper, they uncover shocking clues.
