My SAI adventure: B5 Passat 1.8T 1) carbon-clogged combi valve -- replacing it got rid of check engine light, but smog readiness monitor would not set 2) no vacuum to combi valve's control port during cold start w/ pump on ==> replaced solenoid control valve (under intake manifold) problem solved

Thanks guys..disconnected battery and charged overnight,started this morning with booster charge,let battery charge with car alternator, problem went away...fuse was good but relay was stuck in engaged status..I guess system itself remedied the problem..thanks n best to you all supporting each other...God bless..

If you look carefully there should be a little plastic plug which pops out of the wiper mech cover which gives you easy access for a socket to undo the last bolt on the fuse/relay cover.

Excellent video. I have a secondary air low flow code on bank one pending. Can you tell me what monitors the amount of flow that would trip the engine light? All the other diagnosis tests proved good. Air pump is running. No vacuum leaks. I tested the valves individually they both open and close. With vacuum applied and the relay jumped out. I can feel air coming out of the exhaust when the motor is not running. So my question is is what monitors the flow from the secondary air pump specifically on bank one?

Great video, keep them coming!! Now mine has these codes, it comes and goes, I also hear an exhaust leak maybe that is what sets it off. I'm just think of removing that fuse and not using the smog pump it's loud and noisy. Bad idea?

Hey, great video! So my problem is that the port leading to the cylinder is clogged with carbon, causing insufficient airflow code. Would I be able to say, spray seafoam into the system at some point after the kombi valve going into the cylinder head? (2001 audi a4 b5 2.8). Thanks!

Good information all around. Not sure you still check this channel, but mine keeps blowing the fuse. Just removed the pump to test (and found water inside) but wanted to know what else may cause the fuse to blow. Update** I tested the pump and it works... so what could be causing the fuse to consistently blow after about 2 weeks of operation

Hey RatchetsAndWrenches , Thank you so much for this video, I have a 1994 C220, with the same pump that you tested at the end of the video, We broke the outlet hose connection on it, so we went to pick your part, got another pump, we installed it, and about 1 minute after cold starting with the pickurpart (replacement) pump it made a really loud screeching whinding noise, So im assuming we just got unlucky and got a bad pump from the yard, so MY original pump was good so we disassembled both pumps and i replaced my original compnents of the pump into the new replacement housing, that should be ok right? im currently charging my battery and about to start it, just wanted some tips ! thanks bro!!!!

Yes my neighbor actually said he replaced this pump about 8 years ago and now this one is shot as well. It should be a dry system and water should not be in there. The only place the water can be coming from would be that combo valve. It is such a pain to get to though. I'm afraid I would break something trying to get to it or worse, not be able to get it back on if I got it off haha

What type of fuse does it use? I have the same problem on my VW 2003 Passat V6 but we checked the hoses but the fuse is burn out.

My father didn’t have any codes, only issue he had was we would be driving the car for a hour and the temperature needle would barely move. Decided to replace. A mechanic told me that another reason for "Secondary air system, Flow too low" can be that sot has accumulated in channels in the engine. Do you agree and do you have a way to fix that on a 2,8 FSI? Unfortunately the channels start at the back of the engine.

I have a 2007 Jetta 2.5 and I can't get the secondary or primary EVAP to complete for inspection. Checked the secondary air pump and it powers up. I checked the two relays, J299 and J271, 100amp as well as you showed in your video and they passed. The car runs great. Have driven for over 500 miles and EVAP system still shows incomplete. ya i had the same problem on one of my cars - check the filler tube where you put your gas in - the tube gets wore out from putting the line in it to put gas in - check your gas cap gasket ring - not sealing letting fumes out - missed up the EVAP SYSTEM

I have a similar issue, p0491 & p0492. which usually means that it's something before the two tubes split, but my pump is working fine, I checked many times and the houses from it and even checked to see really hi flow from it. what else can I troubleshoot?? So i just replaced my PCV valve and hoses. Im trying to fix a misfire. i get the secondary air injection system incorrect flow issue. But I recently replaced a camshaft position sensor As well. I need to replace a catalytic converter bank 2 also. Im just trying to figure out why the car keeps dying.

@@ruirs4819 I had go take it to a shop go replace the catalytic converter its on the exhaust line, but the reason it kept dying was the Idle position sensor it was super hard to replace but a very cheap part. Car stopped dying since then.

Hey very informative but it didn't address and issue I'm having with my 2003 FWD Passat 1.8t. The SAI pump cycles on and off continuously after I shut the car off and pull out the key which kills my batter pretty quickly. No codes no obvious wiring issues. Thanks again

Good video. I am having issues with my 2000 Audi A4 2.8L SAI pump. I haven't gotten to check the fuses yet but all the vacuum lines up by the intake manifold are good and not cracked. My system is throwing the only code of P1411 (secondary bank). I took off the hose from the SAI pump that goes up to the intake box and about a cup worth of water came out. The pump does not kick in on a cold start. I am assuming the pump is junk, but I also think that the real problem lies up in the combi valve. Have you ever removed those on this type of engine to clean/replace? I have read a lot that this is where the common problem is because the combi valve seizes up from carbon built up. Any advice or have you done this before and removed those combi valves? They look like they are in an awfully hard spot to get. Thanks

+knights1287 georgia In my experience its either the hoses or the pump itself, and if there was water coming out of that tube its probably in your SAI pump and your pump needs to be replaced. I would replace the pump and go from there. The Combi valves are hard to get to, I have a video on a head gasket replacement on a 1.8L but if you look up that video in my channel it will give a glimpse of the position of the combi valve on yours as well. They work very similar to an egr I also have a video on EGR systems you should watch that before digging in to replace those. GL

I had the same problem on my '01 Passat...drained my battery completely over the work day and needed a jump to get home. From threads on Passat World, I found that you can either pull the fuse for the SAIP or the relay (both located in the PCM/ECM box on the Passat) temporarily until the part arrives. I've ordered a new/used relay on eBAY.

On my 2.7T the pump burned up, I replaced it and it burned again less than 500 miles after I replaced it. I noticed right away that it smelled like burning plastic when you started it up- so obviously something wasn't flowing correctly.. After I had replaced it though, everything was working fine (Kombi valves were working, no faults, Vagcom said no problem). What would cause the pump to burn out twice? Bad luck?

Good video as usual -- thank you! Just looking at that A6 engine compartment is a reminder that German cars are just unnecessarily complicated. The cost of maintaining these cars is getting way too high. Plastic components everywhere -- the quality of "German Engineering" sure has suffered.

I bought that car for $1500 and since I can do the repairs myself the quality of the car I would be driving for that price is about 5 folds the money I put into it.
