This presentation investigates the psychological and emotional need for goals and challenges in our lives as well as considering the role of success in motivation theory. How can we help our students make tangible progress in their English all the while ensuring they do not feel the task is too daunting? We shall begin by stepping back and considering: Why are we teaching / learning English? We can agree that English is now recognised more as a ‘tool’ in our rapidly globalised world rather than as a ‘subject’ to study for interest’s sake. And does this motivate enough young people? So how does preparing for internationally recognised examinations help our students? And not only students but also teachers require a sense of direction. When it comes to planning our own lessons, getting students onside and encouraging them to push themselves that little bit extra, examinations can play their part.
