I also have a Lima E680. It runs great and I love that the whole motion links are just one solid block! Super little engine.

Hi It's amazing that the old locomotives are still running. I also had a lot of analog and old models. But since I switched to digital, I sold them all. I have not regretted my decision to do this. Greetings Torsten

Hi Torsten, I was amazed too 🤗 You are right, DCC has of course many more possibilities. No comparison to DC. Especially for my steam locomotives DCC would be an interesting addition, but at the moment I like to keep it simple. I find it relaxing just to turn the button and run the train… 😎 Thanks for watching and commenting 🙏👍 Greetings, Erik 🙋♂️

Wow, thank you for taking me down memory lane with these models. LIMA models were a big part of my childhood while growing up in Europe. I still have a couple of engines left in their original box.

I had Märklin when I was young, but I am starting to appreciate Lima too. Lots of their models were low budget but not bad at all. And when treated well, they can survive a long time. Thanks for watching and commenting 🙏 Greetings from Belgium 🙋♂️

Many thanks for showing the Lima E680 "Jumbo" 1-D or 2-8 gauge, very interesting your thinking on the possible attempt by Lima to replicate a real-world locomotive. I always thought of it more of a BR44 series type of replica, rather than a BR56. But your hypothesis of a Soviet model is fascinating and I think probably more on target than any previous speculations. This should be researched further. MANY THANKS!!

Hi Erik, the Lima 2-8-0 looks in great condition considering how old it is, it also runs quite well even before you service it. Very Interesting that these were made from 1965 it looks more modern than that. These Mehano 70000 Locos have 2 types of motor, the older version had what I call the open frame type while the later ones have a can motor. The can motor types are better as they are smoother and more reliable. The open frame type have exposed brushes and will run well if not worn too much. I like your idea of fitting double motors you will notice a great difference in the pulling power. You will probably need to look at the pick ups to make sure you have plus and minus from the tracks. You may need to check the back to back of the wheels, I found that on two axles the wheels were too tight against the inner sides of the rails and it made the Loco de-rail on the points. The Axles have steps on them so the wheels cannot be pushed further on. To reduce the back to back measurements, I carefully filed these steps until the wheels moved in a little more. I have a total of 3 of these Mehano 70000 Locos, I think they are a great design, (one is cut down and the other two are dummies), Only one with the newer can type motor was any good, I fitted one of the open frame motors in my Corvette Ship as it was too noisy in the Loco. If you are lucky and the open frame motors are good they are quite powerful so you should end up with a very strong double drive Loco. I am expecting 2 Ho scale display model Diesels tomorrow, they are based on Diesels that ran in China, I am hoping the body shells will fit on my Lima BR216 Chassis. Cheers, Paul.

Hi Paul, yes the Lima looks promising, although it is clearly a toy train (they had two versions of this locomotive, the Express version was the low budget one, often sold in supermarkets). But I like it and I hope to convert it into a TO-series. As for the Mehano-locomotives: one came in damaged, the motor bogie was out of place and it couldn’t run normally. But it was easy to put it back in place. Both seem to have a closed motor, very small. I am not sure how to clean such motor. They run more or less but have very little pulling power. And yes, they sometimes derail on points, thanks for your advice, I will take a look at these wheels. I have vague plans on using the undercarriage of these Mehano for building soviet locomotives, but lots of other things to do now, so time to think about it 😊 Thanks for watching and commenting 🙏 Greetings, Erik 🙋♂️

@@railway187 Hi Erik, thats good news about the motors in the Mehano Locos, they are better than the open frame type. You can strip these motors down but its not so easy. I have done this a few times first measure the distance between the worm drive and the plastic brush holder, this is important to keep the gears inline when re-assembling. Use a very small screwdriver bend back the 4 securing fingers that hold the plastic brush holder in place then carefully remove the brush holder and shaft together, there might be a shim washer on the end of the shaft this controls the end float. Now you can use some brake cleaner or similar to clean the armature and brushes. I noticed my 70000s did not pull very well, its worse when the track curves are a tight radius, as its a long Loco with 3 axle bogies and there is a lot of drag, Double drive will cure this. Your plan to possibly use these chassis for some Soviet Locos is a good idea as you can cut the chassis down and shorten them. I added 2 x 25gr car wheel weights close to the drive bogie for extra traction. Cheers, Paul.

Little help please-just been give a E680 I have two problems when I sent it on the track the wheels just start to spin quickly but the train struggles to move forward it has traction types on the back plus it has come in two parts so how do fit together
@railway1872 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff, if the wheels are spinning I would think the traction tires are in need of replacing. Another reason could be that the locomotive is blocking itself on the tracks, for instance with a loose part that is hanging down in between two sleepers. As for connecting it: there should be a plastic rod coming from the front bogie of the tender. It fits on a plastic pin at the end of the locomotive, right under the drivers cabin. Thanks for watching my video! 👍🙏Greetings 🙋♂️Erik

Hi Erik, The steam locomotive has excellent potential as an SZD loco. Convert it as you planned. The good thing about Russian steam locomotives is that many German types can be used due to the Soviet Union taking many German types after WW2 as reparations. The Soviet Union re-gauged these locomotive's for the broader Russian gauge and used them throughout the 40's, 50's, 60's and early 1970's. The French locomotive's would be difficult to convert into Soviet looking Locomotives. The look of French diesel loco's are very distinct and unique to France, so very hard to make look Soviet or RZD. I would use the chassis of these engines for RZD/SZD cardboard models. Keep us informed of progress Erik. I'd like to get in contact with you to discuss some ideas for RZD layout and other Russian Railways. Is there a way I can message you?
@railway1872 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, yes the Lima has to become a TO-locomotive, no doubt, it is such an interesting one. As for the Mehano, I will probably use the undercarriage for selfbuilt soviet locomotives. I have vague plans on building some locomotives with cyanboard, but for the moment I have only built one open freight car, so a locomotive is a bit scary still. I have an Instagram account (Railway187_) private messaging is possible on that account. Feel free to ask questions on layout or converting models, but I am not an expert, just lucky I understand Russian to some level and therefore I can find lots of information on the internet 😊
