Dude, I love the way you're so transparent - no ego. My wife and I have flipped and worked on at least 12 homes here in the NorthEast and I'm the same way. If I don't know or have never done something, I'm not afraid to try. I get it done, but it usually takes a bit longer than someone else. Good for you....loved the way the door came out though - might try that in another home! I also love the way people comment and give great advice! Good stuff man! Keep up the good work!

Looks great, I done a horizontal shiplap job recently and wish I’d spent more time on painting the wall behind. The customer has their heating on full blast all the time and our 3mm gaps are now 4-5mm gaps and the wall behind is quite noticeable. Luckily the boards themselves are reclaimed and rustic looking and the customer still loves it

Since the door swings in, you could have hidden the gap in the ship lap better by cutting at a 45 degree angle that sticks out beyond the door on both sides. This would also act like a stop so the door ant swing out too far. Once it’s all painted it would be completely invisible.
@faridmohsini92255 жыл бұрын
Tomas Blomqvist Excellent idea I will use this trick in my hidden door
@jackcommons5 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing but figured 45 would be too much since it would overhang the opening. I was thinking a 15 degree cut
@creamore5 жыл бұрын
Chris Tyler that’s funny, I wasn’t sure if 45° would be enough. The corresponding cut would obviously be made on the board on the door
@dlwatib5 жыл бұрын
Because the wall section to the right of the door is so narrow, they could have shiplapped the door so that it sticks out far enough to the right to cover the whole wall and leave a seam only at the corner. Then use your angle idea to overlap the seam on the left side of the door.
@jackcommons5 жыл бұрын
@@creamore that's right it would be a 15° cut and a corresponding 75° cut. I'm going to try this in my house and adjust the angles if necessary. If it's tight enough the seam would almost be invisible.

Love your channel... A lot of people are talking about cutting an angle to better hid the door, but I think the best trick would be to continue cutting the shiplap into three pieces on both walls in the corridor. It should look as if there are two vertical columns that align with the door openings. I would do it on both walls. That should completely blending the vertical openings for the door making it look like a design feature and not the outline of a door.

You guys are extraordinary good! It might take most of us years, and years of experience to have what you accomplish since the time you first held a saw! Well done!
@zacharydomingo27235 жыл бұрын
Do you know what would fully hide it. If you used an overhang trim and put a mirror on the shiplap then you push the mirror as the door
@farmerjim-fat-man-do5 жыл бұрын
Good work. Your stuff is s great source of information for many skill levels. If you do another hidden door with ship lap ( chip and joanna made that crap way to popular) you can miter the joints at the door reveal to reduce gap even more. Miter would overhang the jamb on the hinge side of the door and overhang the door on the latch side. Takes a little more prep getting everthing perfectly flush and plumb but it looks truely hidden. Will be harder to get a good sharp edge with MDF though. And it would be more prone to chipping.

Question, if you angled the backside of the jambs a little bit so clearance wasn’t an issue, would you have been able to get a much tighter fit, or would that have screwed up the hinge installation? I disagree about running the verticals to the ceiling. I think the short pieces of boards would look odd, like you were trying to use up scrap ends. Especially when compared to the opposite wall. Great work. I’m a DIY’er, I need to trim out some new windows and your videos are really helping. Thanks!
@ITIRICI5 жыл бұрын
Tighter fit, no, different more expensive hinges could of helped but he got one of the tightest fits that you could get. A darker color could hide it more. My idea of a sliding door would make it look much more hidden and less likelihood of accident if someone leans on the wall lol.
@stoneyj1a15 жыл бұрын
Ship lap is cool but when they go overboard it looks like a store at the mall, all you need is some of them hooks that go in between. Clearance is so tight, you can see in a couple years that door will be rubbing on the jamb. Great job nonetheless

Quality work and not easy to do. The only thing I would have done differently is have the door cuts go all the way to the ceiling. By cutting the boards above the door just as you did for the door itself would make it look like a design choice with three sections of shiplap. But as it is, its unlike to be seen regardless. Great job!

Unrelated to this vid but I’ve been meaning to ask you, on base molding, is it common to just use a paint grade base mold with a piece of 3/4 round as well and when do you stop the color/design of the floor? Like a wood look? I can get matching shoe mold and base mold? So do you stop it at the 3/4 round or at the floor or...?

Would have been really hidden if it opened outward and ran ship lap all way top left corner & didn't fastened from for edge(on left) yup left edge wall & open it up that way, granted, will have over hang when opening outward like that; but would be entirely hidden. Have done hidden doors, spaces, etc...myself & love the challenge of creating the entire thing. The ribs you can do are endless, & I say, "if you can imagine it, we can build it". One if my fav projects involved covert weights, mechanisms, etc on a book case, & then another wall inside that room. Took weeks(as just can't go out & buy hardware like that, as some are specialized & C&C'd etc...). Love vids like this & always looking for new ideas and tips/tricks, even though doing these Kinds of doors since '96, can ALWAYS learn! Turned out GREAT! Until next time, A

@The351mustang5 жыл бұрын
Or you dont cut the top board and it acts as a stop that doesnt let the door come forward, you just lose a bit of height in the doorway which im guessing wouldnt be an issue in this location
@williamhoudersheldt70765 жыл бұрын
Joe, What makes you think he didn't plan it, when he made the door to that height?

It looks good. I am surprised that you didn't plan for that at the top of the door, wow, worked out well...otherwise you would have to redo just about all the shiplap. If I ever do a job like this I will be starting at the door and working from there. I still wonder about people leaning on it though, what keeps it from opening?
