Yeah I know I should get another dog, but I am still not over Dax's death, so I do not want to have another dog yet. But sometimes I borrow my aunts dog Julie. She is a really nice dog (Labrador retriever) and always stays at my side watching and guarding me :)

It's very understandable. That dog or cat sized hole in our hearts has to heal a bunch until its not a raw aching wound. Having another animal that's c loving is a good way to start the healing. My best wishes that Julie helps that process.

Yes Lilly. It’s very difficult to get another pet after one passes on. They are more than a pet, they are family. Joe Robinet just lost his loving dog as well. Both your loved ones will be missed by you, Joe and all of both your supporting fans.

Survival Lilly you’ll never get over your dogs death as same goes when it’s a family member, i mourn for my fur baby everyday, but what helped me deal with my dogs death was getting a new puppy. It’s that companionship and loyalty and just having your Bf with you when there’s no human companionship around...it helps so much just dealing with the loss. The sooner you fill that void the better off you’ll be I promise.

The best tinder I have ever used I made myself out of candle wax and makeup pads. You can buy a pack of 100 makeup pads for under $5 (US) and then you soak each pad in melted candle wax. When you want I fire you simply break the pad in half to expose the cotton fibers which easily catch a spark, then the wax will keep them burning hot and strong for 10-15 min. Another plus to using these is that they are waterproof. They can be submerged in water and still work perfectly fine a moment later (if they don't break to let water into the cotton fibers, this is unlikely because it takes a bit of effort to break the wax, but if it happens it will be difficult to catch a spark. It should still work with a lighter)

Suvival Lilly I like the second technique as well. It tends to keep the tinder in one place and puts more hot sparks on target before they start to burn out. I also like birch bark for tinder - I've never had it fail to take a spark. It's quite reliable. Fine shavings from fatwood work exceptionally well. Stay safe out there. Cheers.

Your preferred technique over-uses the firesteel rod, so you'll wear down your firesteels far more than necessary, and every time you strike you impact your knife into the tinder, effectively extinguishing the ignition! Go back to the first technique and do it again except start by holding the tinder securely with the rod (as you did with your preferred technique) before drawing the rod back against the steadily held striker. You'lll find that you will aim the spark into the tinder and light it with a single strike and you won't disturb the ignition with your striker tool or hand.

Am 57 years old and like people for most of history, have never had the need for that tool. Yes, it looks interesting and has some advantages. And next time I am in a department store, I might pick one up. I will also pick up a pack of lighters, cause I smoke a pipe and that may also explain my not needing a fire steel thing. Even if you do not smoke anything, a zippo lighter is like an everyday carry thing, also. It has a spark and flame. If it runs outta fluid, the spark still functions, and flames can be brought into being. Still, Thank You kindly for the demonstration because I do learn stuff and that is priceless.

A good companion, to a ferrocerium rod, is jute twine dipped in candle wax. Take 3 pieces of jute twine, 30 inches (76 cm) long, braid them together, and dip it melted candle wax. This makes a piece of water proof tinder about 24 inches (61 cm) long. To light it, fray the end to expose fine fibers, lay it on the striker and pull ferrocerium rod over the striker, similar to lighting char cloth with flint and steel. I prefer this technique (even over lighters or matches) for lighting my primus and alcohol stoves since it keeps my fingers farther away.

I always ended up camping in the rain or snow even when the forecast was for perfect sunny weather. LOL I found that it was handy to take along a 1 sq ft piece of tarpaper, you can rip it into strips about 1" wide and it will start a fire even if your fuel is wet. It doesn't take up much room in your pack and makes a lot of difference when your hands are numb from the cold. I've been watching your channel for a couple of years now Lilly and really enjoy it, especially since I'm disabled now and can't go hiking anymore. Thanks. :o)
