@@COIFISHGAMING 100% agree It's sad that it's sorta hard to get some people to take a look at SoE, i know if isn't perfect, but I feel like a lot of passion was poured into it, it's a shame it was mostly Square's last attempt at letting it's western branch direct and produce anything...

Skyrim's composer's first OST was an absolute banger. "A Boy and his Dog" is one of the most wondrous opening songs to a video game in the SNES era, and after the early game's mostly (for the time crazy innovative) atmospheric tracks, the more melodious songs that pop up more and more throughout the rest of thw game are just as great, or even better [Warning: Very Long Post Incoming!]: Further listening to it with a guitar in hand reveals an OST that is chock full of surprisingly advanced musicality, which I think is easy to miss given how ambient the soundtrack largely is. In some of the more melodic, fleshed out tracks, Jeremy frequently changes keys on a fly, sometimes three or four times in the same song, and many - if not most - of these songs utilize several different modes, some of them rather exotic, and uncommonly heard in mainstream music (outside of maybe modern classical music, or perhaps, in some cases, prog rock and metal ie Dream Theater and the like). Lydian b7, both Harmonic Major and Minor (with the latter being the most extensively used mode in the game), Mixolydian b6, Phrygian Dominant, and more - sometimes they happen only very fleetingly, in the form of passing notes and accidentals - but each of these and more turn up now and again, throughout, and lend the OST a distinctly exotic-and-modern-western-classical vibe. The wide range of modality is particularly impressive given the limitations of the 16-bit era's small cartridge space and somewhat archaic midi and sampling capabilities. But, while (extremely brilliant in their own right) composers like Mitsuda and Uematsu were, themselves, using some less common modes and scales, my sense is that they were often using them from a place of intuition (as opposed to technicality and formal training). However, in Jeremy's case, there is, by contrast, the sense that these changes aren't entirely intuitive but are rather deliberate and seem to point to someone who was - at least to some meaningful extent - classically trained in music theory - or, in other words, someone who either attending (or was planning to attend) college to study music theory and/or received at least some (meaningful) amount of professional training from a seasoned music instructor. Of course, it could also be that Jeremy - like Nubuo (at the start of his career) and Mitsuda - is simply a natural prodigy. Maybe he never had any formal training. Admittedly, I know little of Jeremy's background in music, so - whether this is actually the case or not - is merely a guess on my part - but that's at least what it sounds like to my ears, anyway. A prime example of song that suggests a background of musical training and/or a deeper knowledge in western classical music can be heard in what is my personal favorite track, "Puppet Show" (1:07:52). From its lush, orchestral sounding instrumentation to its baroque sounding passages, I can't say enough good things about this song The next track, "Ebony City" is an extremely early example of the style that would eventually emerge and be greatly expanded upon in Skyrim many years later, in Skyrim - which is awesome. The song after that, "Deserted Castle" is really lowkey interesting track, as it actually features piano chords - a rarity in an SNES dominated by arpeggios (which were often employed due to the sampling of an instrument being compressed and pitch shifted to the where, outside of orchestral synth voicings, can sound harsh and jagged, but not so much here). "Queen Bluegarden" is lovely and sounds like it would sound right at home on its spiritual cousin, 'Secret of Mana' (I've no doubt that Jeremy studied that game's OST in prep for this game, as it's not the only song that sounds decidedly Mana-esque). "Tinker Tinderbox" confirmed my suspicion that a subtly used leitmotif (based off a passage of a descending grouping of Lydian Dominant scales first heard in the opening "Boy and his Dog") is used throughout the OST, but which is made very evident here - and quite unexpectedly at that, given that the leitmotif is sandwiched between some otherwise pretty cheery sounding, circus-like melodies and instrumentation. The absolutely gorgeous "High in the Sky" likewise takes yet another section of "Boy and his Dog", but greatly expands upon it. The entire song sounds rather enchanting mysterious and dream-like, which fits well with its title. "The Final Battle" plays off of the title screen track and, aside from the booming drums, parts of it are notably soft, giving it a very different aura from many other final boss battle songs I've heard. It's interesting how the penultimate track returns to a winder version of the darkly magical "Boy and his Dog". The final track, "Staff Roll" is beautiful and straight up sounds like something that would fit perfectly on Chrono Trigger (which is very high praise). Interestingly, the track is subdued and in a minor key, which is somewhat atypical compared to the boisterous upbeat, triumphant songs you might hear in other Square song from the time. So, yeah - it's a great OST, and one that is much more technically than I had initially noticed (though to be fair, I never made it past the stone age area and this is maybe the second time that I've ever heard the entire OST lol) - and if it wasn't obvious, I'm particularly taken with the latter half of the album. Sorry for writing so much, but as someone who loves the music from Skyrim and who also enjoys music theory, I figured I'd chime in on something that probably hadn't been discussed before. Thank you for posting it. Cheers!

I found this OST through a column Toby Fox wrote for Famitsu, it really does sound lovely. I never played any SNES games as the Wii was already out when I was growing up, so I can't exactly compare it to other soundtracks made around that time, but even by today's standards the composing is really nice and atmospheric. I imagine it probably complimented the rest of the game very well.

Checkpoint: My younger brother and I used to play SOE in the 1990s, more precisely between 1995 and 1997, while my mother and father worked all day to keep the house and buy dinner. He and I used to walk around the city center, because there were no residents in the building where we lived, it was a commercial building and therefore, we had no one to play with and we ran after video stores and arcades. However, one day we found a rental company far away, it was about 4 kilometers to go and another 4 to come back! However, there were several North American tapes and among them, Secret Of Evermore. 3:30 Rewatching this scene of the Squaresoft logo helped me have an incredible nostalgic epiphany, which is associated with the incredible and atmospheric soundtrack. Masterpiece. Half of the interest of this game is in its sound design, top 3 of the snes at least. It is also my childhood's favorite game, I was so in it at the time, all with that beautiful guide of course.. I always preferred it to its predecessor, because of its ambient.

Just finished a summer of 16 bit RPGs. I completed Secret of Mana, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger and Secret of Evermore. I gotta say.. I'm really glad I played S of E, but my God this game is so cryptic and tedious. Chrono Trigger was downright easy compared to it imo. The ingredients system is creative, but the amount of grinding it takes to level up spells kind of takes a little fun out of the experience. Everyone should give this one a try, but it is super polarizing for good reasons.
