But I love it when someone my age recognizes one of the songs and we get to talk about how much these games meant to us as kids, and how they've still left impressions on our adult psyches. I can say the Sony SPC700 sound controller chip is one of the thing that influence who I am. It has my favorite ever sound signature. I've never heard another console system that deliver the same warm timbre combined with it's level of clarity. It creates a very warm bittersweet and nostalgic sound, but with a lot of body and clarity. I wouldn't be as much of a music lover today if I didn't hear the music coming from this sound chip as a kid, it effectively made me a lover of video games and music. None of the game consoles I played earlier or afterward have the same sound.
@DeskoDev5 жыл бұрын
Sure, I'd say it's got great warmth, but the gaussian filter + not-so-perfect frequency (32KHz) definitely drops the clarity, yet for some games the former is absolutely necessary and even the clearer, less muddy sounding sinc filter that emulators support would cause a downgrade with some of these more atmospheric ones.
@someguy432105 жыл бұрын
I don't know the technicalities of it, but to my ears depending on the games and soundtrack it does have good clarity. The SNESAPU plugin for foobar2000 have various options to play with, so I can increase the sample rate. I converted the SPC files to FLAC and listened to them on my LG with the quadDAC.
@DeskoDev5 жыл бұрын

@DeskoDev5 жыл бұрын
@@Krystalmyth MG2:SS doesn't use the MSX sound hardware at all. It uses a custom audio chip located inside the cartridge :) In fact, there were a lot of sound expansions for the MSX2 like the later MSXMUSIC spec which added FM synthesis like the Genesis. Final Fantasy is a great example of that, though it also supports PSG music. Both ways are far better than the original NES soundtrack besides some swapped around tracks.

I'm not nearly old enough to have grown up on the snes, but god does the music from this console age well. I think the limitations were more helpful than hindering when making this music tbh, but I don't know enough music theory to be able to tell you why. also, seeing fe4 music on any music comp immediately brightens my day (or night, seeing as it's 1:30am rn) calling of peace was a great choice for this playlist, it's such an underrated track from an even more underrated ost
@joshburns17772 жыл бұрын
I've got a music degree and I think your explanation was great without any more qualification - it's a well-known phenomenon that limitation breeds creativity. For me, the things I've written (music or literature, or whatever else) which I like the most, and/or which I've felt the most motivation to write and have had the least writer's block with, have been those projects in which I've intentionally imposed constraints on myself just because constraints are that useful for the creative process. If I had to explain why this works, I don't actually think I'm qualified to give a definitive answer either, but I'll give my "feeling" of how it works. Have you heard of choice paralysis? You could also call this "Netflix syndrome" - the more options you have at your disposable, the more comparative decisions you have to make. Deciding between option 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 takes more time and deliberation than deciding between options 1 and 2, let alone if your options are between 1 and 10,000 (or however many titles Netflix has available to watch). Even if this decision-making is subconscious, and even if you know what you want to watch (or at least the type of thing you want to watch) at the start, still having the POSSIBILITY to choose a different thing can, even subconsciously, cause you to second-guess yourself, or to have subconscious thoughts such as "there are so many other options, wouldn't it be worth checking them out to make sure I'm watching the thing I would most enjoy? That mystery option might just be better than what I have chosen/have in mind/have found". I think the above dilemma affects different people to different extents. I have ADHD, and I believe that this is closely linked to why the above dilemma affects me to quite a large extent! Regardless - I think you can take the Netflix example and replace ["choosing between titles" and "am I sure I'll enjoy this the most"] with ["choosing notes/instruments/harmony/other musical materials" and "am I sure this will sound the best or be most appropriate for its intended purpose"], or any other creative project. I can't tell you how many hours in total I've spent mindlessly and obsessively scrolling through the seemingly-infinite pages of Netflix titles, getting ever less sure of what I might want to watch as I go, and (a lot of the time) ironically spending as much time trying to decide what to watch as it would have taken to actually watch an episode of something. I've often literally commented out loud about how nice it would be to sometimes actually be physically barred from viewing more than a narrow selection of options, to force you to choose more quickly. And, depending on how that narrow selection is made, wouldn't it be quite fun to force this narrow selection upon yourself and thereby force yourself, potentially, to try something you wouldn't normally ever have even considered? You might just discover a gem, or discover something about yourself ("what do you know - turns out I am a fan of surrealist South Korean animated shows and just never knew it until now", or whatever). When your scope is changed - these are my options, and they are few, and potentially very different from the options I might have cherry-picked for myself - it changes how you view your options (odd things you would have glossed over before are suddenly important because they represent a large chunk of your total choice options/available musical materials/whatever else), and simultaneously make your decision-making very fast, allowing you to cut out the infinite deliberation that comes with choice paralysis and instead spend your time actually watching stuff/composing music/whatever else. I apologise - I've ADHD'd all over this comment and unintentionally written you an essay...
