"In 1746 after the Battle of Culloden a prominent Jacobite fugitive the Laird of Balnamoon hid for many months in a cave in the upper reaches of Glen Mark....There was a large price on Balnamoon's head...One rainy night he was very nearly caught. Dressed as a servant he was sitting by the kitchen fire in a farmhouse in Glen Mark, when suddenly into the kitchen came a party of soldiers in search of him. The farmer gruffly ordered Balnamoon out to clean the byre. The fugitive lost no time in getting back across the muir to his cave". In Glen of the Rowan Trees, D. Fraser, 1973, Standard Press, Montrose.

Well done in finding this cave my attempt back in the 1970's failed with landing at the wrong side of the river with a party of hill walkers shouting its over here mate.

Are you speeding 😂 Cheers for showing us this interesting place in a beautiful area of Scotland 👍🏻 You need to take a decent torch with you instead of relying on a weak phone light.

If I remember correct Balnamoon made a visit to his kin the Carnegie's of Lour and hid for a short while in a secret hide place between the floors of the Estate mansion house. I was given access to see exactly where he stayed when working there in the early 1960's.

A good video about an interesting area in Scotland’s history. However a wee bit of research on your part will reveal that Prince Charles was never here. Probably he’d already hightailed to France. The Laird of Balnamoon (Bonny moon) certainly used this cave at a pinch. There are different versions of the story of the fugitive laird at the farm, probably garbled over time.

I think that the moss and lichen on those walls is thousands of years old rather than a few hundred.

BKR your right Balnamoon gave this cave a few visits, but I doubt Prince charlie ever gave it a look that would be to close for comfort.

As you were coming out the cave i thought wouldn't it have been as funny as anything if people were coming down the mountain and just saw you popping out, i have a feeling they may have had to search out some large leaves as would have crapped themselves. You mentioned once Charlie was inside he may have sealed up the entrance, i think you are right as the stones to the left and ones on the right look the exact size to fit. Curious as never seen you do it, do you not drink the water from the highlands? i can't go near a fresh stream without filling a bottle up, best water ever.
