Tired of the same old sounds, try some of these sounds for yourself. Sometimes it pays to sit and just learn how amps work in order to get cool sounds.
The Mesa Boogie Mark V 25 is a gem. I did my best to keep the volume level the same throughout the whole vid. As you know, we tend to judge louder sounds as better and I didn't want that for this vid as I wanted each sound to be equal in volume so you get the idea. This meant a lot of tweaking on the input gain on my audio interface to keep things level. I tried my best.
Gotta love the sound of a Strat into a Mesa Boogie Amp

Love the level of detail in exploring this amp. I've had one since first released and it's been amazing. Hate how difficult KZbin made it to find this when searching for videos related to this amp though!

Absolutely! In fact I went through the Andy Timmons Mkv 25 video with Doug West again, and had some aha moments. Also went back through the manual again today, and it gave me more ideas. As you know, the tonal options are nearly limitless.

And with humbuckers on all of these gain settings you will get a much thicker distorted sound. I have a single humbucker guitar that I can get to sound like its going through a cranked Plexi on Crunch mode with the gain at 1 o'clock, mids at 1 o'clock (boost mode at that point), bass pretty low and a V curve to dial out some of the mids on the EQ. Sounds fantastic even through the 10" speaker.
@SaintLuminus

Yes indeed. Humbuckers will change how I dialed everything in this vid. But the basis behind it is the same.
@GuyNarnarian
@GuyNarnarian Жыл бұрын
@@SaintLuminus Oh definitely the principles stay the same. I'd say to go with less bass than you normally would with the humbuckers, especially on the neck pickup, but its just another variable.

@@SaintLuminusyour settings seem to track well with Mini Hums (got an A5 BKP nailbomb bridge mini hum in one and a Black Cat Guitar 60s Epi vintage spec hot mini hum in other guitar)-mention that because using identical settings you use gives you a good jumping off point to dial in w the approach you’re going for

I was almost wondering if the crunch mode is actually part of the second channel, the volume jump on mine is insane going from clean to crunch. The video gave me some things to try though, good stuff. Next video idea: playing Jazz on Xteme mode lol
@SaintLuminus
@SaintLuminus Жыл бұрын
Depending on how you set up the Crunch mode...yeah it can be a massive jump! I typically turn down the volume before I even play just to be safe.

Great video. Subscribed! I’ve been using the cab clone DI out the back of my Mark V25 into my interface, and then using the Two Notes Wall of Sound plugin IRs that are just incredible and offer so many options. My initial hesitation was regarding the cab clone DI but it works awesome with the Two Notes plugin in Logic. Just thought I would share that for anyone interested in another option!
@SaintLuminus
@SaintLuminus Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and sharing your own experience. I find the Cab Clone useable and just fine all by itself.....but certainly not my first choice. Two notes is indeed awesome. Have you tried 3rd Party IRs as well? I've tried some but I've never found them to be particularly amazing.
@evenstephen2000
@evenstephen2000 Жыл бұрын
@@SaintLuminus Yes, I agree with you. Honestly, if the two notes wall of sound plugin wasn’t so great, I would have just purchased a two notes torpedo or the Suhr that you have. But the WOS really lifts the cabclone up significantly. If I were you, I would look at the two notes website and their IRs are incredible. They have about 600 of them and they really divide up the categories to where you can understand what you’re getting. I really like the Pete thorn ones, the mesas are great (officially licensed) and SO many others. That said, I haven’t really had to look elsewhere. It seems like a lot of the other IRs are not quite up to that pro sounding standard. ML Sound Labs have a few solid ones…

I have done that also, but I wish we could get just the preamp without the "cabs" already on it through the xlr.

@@masterofreality230 Just the raw output would be nice, I agree. You can get that from the Big Mark V through its Slave Output. BUT, you have to have a speaker or a load connected.

It is also a good platform for pedals. I use a high gain pedal and the settings go as follows: Fat Channel - Gain at noon - Treble 4 o'clock - Mid (boost) 1 o'clock - Bass 10 o'clock - Presence 2 o'clock - Master 8 or 9 o'clock. EQ close to V shape
@SaintLuminus
@SaintLuminus Жыл бұрын
Yes its really good as a pedal platform. In fact I would say its one of the better platforms out there because of the way you can dial in the character of the amp up front to work with any type of overdrive or distortion pedal. Thanks for sharing some of your settings.
@GregoryGuay
@GregoryGuay Жыл бұрын
Do you bother changing channels on the Mesa or get your variety of clean/dirty with external overdrive?
@Rogeramirez
@Rogeramirez Жыл бұрын
@@GregoryGuay Different channels have different eq curves and volume, so it's not convenient but it can be done just for one set up Dirty/clean. When using pedals the best channel is Nº1 Fat mode, but then you're stuck to its eq curve, which could make the clean sound setting a hard task.
@SaintLuminus
@SaintLuminus Жыл бұрын
@@GregoryGuay I switch channels and use the drive from the Mesa. However if I want a variety of tones for live playing, I’d probably use pedals instead

Please somebody tell me if these amps hiss n hum at even low gain/volume settings? Every Boogie I've had is noisy as hell.Got rid of them all because of noise. I'm reall wanting this amp just for the clean / crunch
@SaintLuminus
@SaintLuminus 6 ай бұрын
Mine does not hiss and hum at low gain/volume settings. These are professional amps made to be played in professional settings. However bad power and/or ground loops can cause hum and noise. All you can do is try one out.

Saint luminus, i have a mark 2 c thats been on storage for 20 years, any advice as to delicate cleaning of this old amp. Covered in dust and neglect. Man at music store in memphis wants me to bring it in and let them clean and perform maintenance check on it...
@SaintLuminus
@SaintLuminus 10 ай бұрын
If its been in storage for 20 years, I would call Mesa Boogie and make the arrangements to send it in to their factory in Petaluma and have them service it. Or perhaps they can recommend someone closer to you. I live in California so of course I would just send it up north. But yeah, I would have it serviced by someone who really knows these amps, and I can guarantee you will turn it on after its been serviced and get blown away.
