The reason the tension goes away when he's not at the cabin is because that was the point. The cabin is like a representation of all the negativity in his life. It's empty, quiet, secluded, plus he's constantly thinking Shooter is lurking around.

Loved Secret Window. His performance is really underrated. And I'm not really a huge Depp fan. I liked seeing the scenes of him alone in that cabin. And his comedic timing is perfect.

One of my favorite King adaptations, I think everything fit well and made sense for it to be done the way it was. They said that going through the mirror was supposed to symbolize that from that point forward, you were seeing everything through Mort's eyes, as he was seeing it (Shooter, the differences in his home and the motel, etc;). As for it dragging out, he was dealing with loss and depression, a state where everything feels like it's dragging out and you just don't want to deal with anything. Even the squirrel was a cool detail to include, because when you're in a moment of extreme stress you fixate on weird/random things. I think, for the most part, it did a great job of making the viewer feel what the protagonist was feeling.

Man i loved this film. I remember being on edge through the whole first part of the movie , watching every corner in his house expecting the "killer" to jump out and murder him. I don't know why i thought that would happen, but perhaps the atmosphere and music of the film just gave me that vibe. it also made me feel comfy in some weird way. Twist did throw it off a bit though indeed.

I love that he spent that much time sniffing the book. Sniffing books is good. At the time I always felt Depps quirks that he mentioned were Hunter Thompson still being in his system. HST was/is a big part of his life and like Bill Murray warned him; he wouldn't be getting him out of his system any time soon after playing him. It cannot be a coincidence that the Rum Diary is shown prominantley on Morts book shelf in the cabin.

I'm surprised that many people don't like this. Because it is one of my favourite movies. Johnny Depp and John Turturro are both fantastic, it's very original and there is a lot behind the story. There are a lot of good references in this movie which really add to the story. Also, I like the genre switches that are mentioned, for me it works really well. And I like slow movies, so the middle part should always stay in it for me. This is A+ material, no matter how bad some people rate it.

SPOILER: I don't know if it's been said yet, but I took the fancy shot with the mirror in the beginning to be plot-relevant. I believe there's another use of the mirror later on as the reveal happens. We start the film going into the mirror (Depp's mind) and then when we come out of it later on, it's the return to reality as everything he's actually been doing becomes clear. Sort of like the mirror theory for Kubrick's version of The Shining, where whenever Jack sees the ghosts, there's a mirror nearby.

The shot where the camera goes through the mirror in the beginning is us (the viewer) being transported into Depp's point of view in the movie. They explain this in the DVD commentary. Was one of my favorite movies growing up and I was poor so would watch commentary on movies I liked. I think it's a pretty neat idea.

I felt like the camera movements were Fincher in preschool, but it still worked. I do really enjoy this movie, but im ultra biased due to my love for stephen king. Also, Charles Dutton? Or Captain Jonas Cutter? Is it weird that Depps friend was Captain Cutter, while he himself was Captain Jack?

As a writer, i am looking forward to stories like this. Ending is so satisfying, and also fun and grandious. Definitely check this one out. ( sorry for grammar)

I knew John Shooter wasn't real about 30 minutes in. Nothing made sense about him. The divorce stuff was needed to show when he finally snapped. I loved Johnny Depp's performance.

the movie has to have the divorce scenes to get a deeper meaning of the anxiety and mental problems Mort is having from it. the divorce is a large part of what is making him insane, not just john shooter. this is an incredible film only to be noticed by those that look deeper than entertainment.

Yes, a really good movie, but not without its flaws. Depp's performance alone makes it worth the watch. There's a lot to love about this movie and it certainly doesn't deserve to be on any worst list.

There is this one scene where Johnny Depp‘s character looks in the mirror and sees the reflection of his back. The same scene happens in Dolores Claiborne, when Jennifer Jason Leigh‘s character rushes into the bathroom on the ferry and looks in the mirror, but also sees the reflection of her back. And this is from 1995. When this happened in Secret Window, I instantly connected these two scenes. I wonder who started it: if there is a scene in an earlier movie or if this is exactly described in both books. I guess Stephen King likes Rene Magritte (Not to Be Reproduced, 1937).

When the camera is going into the mirror in the beginning...That's David Koepp's way of telling us we are in Mort's head and we see things that he sees. At the end of the movie his wife shows up and you'll see the camera go back into the mirror now telling us we are seeing things as they actually are. Which is why Mort's house is all messy when a few seconds ago it wasn't. This use to be my favorite movie, it's now my number 2 and I think this movie is really underappreciated

I don't agree that the story loses steam in the second half. I was more invested in seeing what Morty would do to get back at the one who hurt and betrayed him the most. This movie delivered that in a cliche yet shocking way. In my mind, the mission was completed and the movie had set out what it intended to do for the most part.

I love this film! And yes, I smell my books though not as vigorously as you did. 😄 Stephen King is the absolute bomb. I have several books that he wrote, and almost all if his films. Another great film from King's short stories with Maria Bello is called _Big Driver._ I loved, loved, loved this film and wouldn't mind a review....😉 Thank you.

Hey Chris, I just wanted to point out something if you didn't notice. The significance of going into the mirror at the beginning is that it shows that everything from then on in the film is from Depp's perspective. At the end of the film after he realizes that Turturro is him the camera goes back through the mirror so we can see things as they are. I just thought that it was interesting and I think there was more too the camera going into the mirror than just being a cool looking shot. P.S. I love your work.

@@s.kanninchen105 Well, when she really want to fall in love with another man she should’ve waited for her and him ( Depp’s Character) still being legally married to each other. Also Depp’s character walking in on his soon to be ex-wife in the act of cheating w/ another man. All I’m saying he shouldn’t have killed him and her. But I understand.
