I finally bought some resin and had a go at making one of these a couple of weeks ago following your system. Because I don't have a work shop I have to improvise.. Splintering the wood on a doorstep works, just brace it with something and slam your foot into it. Splinters really well depending on the wood. I used a piece of Matai, the color of the ring comes up nice and dark with wood oil which doesn't harm the resin, although I did have to polish again afterwards. My sister decided she was going to have it before I had a chance to take pics, so I'll be making another one sometime soon. Lots of fun, and yeah, a lot of time. Mine took around 3 hours not including the time for the resin to set.

can you make a resin mold from an egg to get a clear resin egg you can even put a nice rose bud or something inside if you can that is
@alpakachu49498 жыл бұрын
thin of it as a marble but egg shaped
@hashtastic35378 жыл бұрын
You could make a solid egg with a rose bud suspended inside, but making an actual shell that contains something would be kinda tricky. Unless you join to halves of an egg shell form together, but then you'd have a seam in your egg.
@majesticderp8 жыл бұрын
You'd need to do a 2 part mold. Make an egg mold, split lengthwise, and cut a pour hole through the top (when laid down). Mix your resin, more than enough for both halves. Pour resin into the mold side with no hole, a bit less than half full, and add item to go inside. Quickly place other mold half on top, band or clamp it together, and then pour through the pour hole on the top, until the pour hole itself is full. Id recommend using a vacuum chamber to help kill any bubbles, unless you want them inside. You can add pearl powder, glitter, pigment, etc into the resin before or after you pour, to get different effects. Once its fully cured, you'd remove the molds, clip off the pour tab, and then sand/polish it to perfection. If you haven't worked with resin before, definitely make a few test batches to get yourself accustomed to the resin itself, and the viscosity level. It will also help to ensure you clamp/bind the mold pieces together properly, so there's no warping of the cast item, nor seepage.

Best when using plant life in your resin (even if it's already dried or something like lichen) is to first preserve it by placing in powdered silica. Otherwise, once in the resin/epoxy, the color of the plant/flower will be drained and faded or will turn a different color entirely.

I'm about to try this myself so I am just assuming at this point. I think they mix a white pigment with epoxy and carefully brush it on the broken bits of wood before putting it in the mold, then pour the blue epoxy in the mold. After everything is poured I'm assuming they use a toothpick or something to stir or pull the white epoxy into the blue. Hope that helps!

Thanks a ton for making this video!! 👍🏻 It really helped me out cutting and polishing epoxy like this. FYI any flat faces can be scraped using a utility knife like a card scraper, then it's ready to go straight to 3000 grit. Doing that shaved off a ton of sanding time for my project, I didn't have any rounded surfaces like yours though or I would've gone through the grits just like you.
