According to legendary turf writer Charles Hatton, it took 2 lead ponies and an outrider to pull Secretariat up after the race. Clockers timed him, pulling up, at 1:59 2/5 for the mile and the extra quarter it took to stop him. That is the same record time he ran in the Derby. And he was pulling up.

You have to tip your hat to Champagne Charlie for a spirited stretch run. For a second it look like CC was going to chug passed Sec., but once he saw the other horse Secretariat hit the jets for the win. Just a second and 1/5 off Dr. Fagar's record for a mile distance.

Love that jammed parking lot for a KD sub-prep. I went to the Wood Memorial twice in the '00s and it was never half that full. American racing has let down the $2 bettor.
