All western critical production and minerals should be from allied countries with possible production in 3rd party countries who have to meet democratic, labor and environmental goals.
@rolfustroli71703 ай бұрын
In an ideal scenario, yes! But it’s extremely expensive. Like Norway is and has always been a close ally of America. But it is freaking expensive to produce stuff here. High salary and production costs. But I think this will be a good deal for both sides, and the global (western) market..

This is probably catastrohic for biodiversity in our Norwegian fiords. This is actually a gambling with the ecosystems where they're going to mine these minerals, not anything to celebrate. The Norwegian government is one of western Europes most eager countries to destroy the ecosystems and biodiversities.

Both Norway and Sweden possess enormous reserves of minerals and metals. So does Denmark with Greenland being part of the Danish Kingdom. We need more trade within the circle of Democratic partners in the world and less trade with authoritarian regimes.

What is most interesting here, is Barth Eide's speech, not what he said but what he didn't say. He was talking about Norway's current production of critical minerals but didn't mention the future projects which will be on a completely different scale if they are ever realised.

@@Mosern1977 EU is actually quite sceptical because of enviromental concerns but I don't think that will be a hindrance in the long run. It's not about whether we want it to happen, it's about what is possible. Having huge deposits of valuable minerals is one thing, getting them out of the ground is a different matter. There are four major mining projects in planning in Norway that I know of. + There's a new titanium ore mine at Engebøfjellet. That project is already sorted out and it will open later this year. Norway is already one of the world's biggest producers of titanium ore btw. + There are some serious deposits of rare earth minerals at Ulefjell, possibly the largest deposit in Europe. This is an old mine, dating all the way back to 1659, but rare earth minerals weren't really important until recently so nobody was looking for it. It's still not clear whether the minerals are concentrated enough for mining to be economically viable though. + The phosphate deposits in Dalana are almost as big as all other other known phosphate deposts in the world combined and the field also has a significant amount of vanadium and magnetite. The problem here is that most of it is so deep in the ground it can't be extracted with current mining technology so new methods will have to be developed. + Then there's deep sea mining. Norway's potential there is so big it may dwarf all the three projects I mentioned combined and Norway happens to be one of the most advanced countries in the world when it comes to deep sea operations. Deep sea mining is still a brand new concept and a lot of work will have to be done to develop economically and environmentally sustainable methods. - (Maybe I should mention Kiruna too. Kiruna is in Sweden but close to the border and far away from any Swedish ports so everything produced there has to be shipped through Norway. Kiruna has been a major iron ore producer for ages but recently they discovered the rock there has serious amounts of rare earth minerals too, possibly the largest deposits in Europe - unless it's beaten by Ulefoss that is. ;-)

@@Mosern1977 I wrote a loong reply to you but it seems KZbin ate it. I'm not going to rewrite all of it but I'll try a short one. EU is actually rather specitical because of environmental concerns. But they are also very keen on getting to those minerals of course so I don't think that's going to be an issue in the long run. The real issues are money and technology. Norway has a crazy amount of all kinds of critical minerals but having those resources is one thing, extracting them is a completely different matter. Most of it is in locations that can't be mined today so new technology will have to be developed first. Some of the other plans may turn out not to be economically viable. Only time will show what happens.

Yeah. This deal will ruin Chinese economy. They are currently the biggest producer and exporter of phosphate, and what they found in just one area in Norway equal more than the known phosphate in the rest of the world.

Wow. Blinken actually is capable of speaking to another country without threatening, warning, or insulting them?? Astounding! When a new government took power in Mali, Blinken sent Vicky Nuland there and the first thing she did was threaten them. Not listen. Not understand. Not respect. Threaten. Probably understandable as Norway and Mali are slightly different...

Well, first of all United States are very close trade partners and ally. With long history of being ally together. Also there are long history there United States has asked us (Norway) for diplmacy services between countries that has been on the edge of the war, but made them talk together as middle man and also stopped several wars because of Norway. Because United States are very well hated in many countries and can't do that them self. So they had too be contacting someone that could be neutral country and often they are contacting us for that kinda help. I don't know the history between United States and Mali, but there are very different thing. Also we wouldn't handle that kinda behaviour very well and i think United States knows that. Also we have the biggest sovereign wealth fund in the world and are heavily invested ($900 billion in United States also borrowed $200 billions too United States) that's should say little bit about how powerful Norway are when United States won't bully us for anything and what should it be? It's not much they can criticize us about things. And one another thing is that it's way different one thing too visit Mali, then invite Norway for making new deals together. It's very important too have respectful and professional relationship. And finaly! It is in United States interest too respect our nation same with us respecting your country so we can still be a trade partner and ally. Both of the nations needs it so we can be making new similar deals to this one in the future. I bet that someone has given Blinken several warnings before the meetings.

He's on the normal level for US diplomacy though? Intimidate authoritarian powers while maintaining good terms with their allies have been the gold standard kept across both parties for decades now, the only time US broke that mold and upset the US allies as well was under Trump, especially because he liked saying and doing his own things at times, undermining the diplomatic team. Only reason he didn't provoke greater reaction from offended countries, even China who usually have a very thin skin, is because he was seen as a big baby internationally and not taken seriously by anyone.
