Ben Simmons and Jared Dudley beefed because the long time role player saw the future

This beef requires us to remember who Ben Simmons was at the start of his career. So let's allow our minds to travel back to the late 20teens, when we were young and hopeful and had more energy and my dog was still alive, and Ben Simmons was considered the second coming of Magic Johnson. He was 6’10” but moved and ran and drove and passed like a point guard. Sure, he didn't really shoot, but we didn't worry, there was so much he could do!
Jared Dudley also didn't worry. Why worry, the guy who couldn't/wouldn't shoot was his defensive assignment in the 2019 playoffs. Instead of worrying, Dudley simply told everyone that, actually, Ben Simmons was not the second coming of Magic Johnson, he was average in the half court.
Beef ensued. Enjoy.

Indeed, he let his ego go to his head especially with the “young socialite” comments when he was talking about only wanting to be traded to Californian teams or his refusal to develop a shot regardless of the situation. Plus that comment by Embiid is not surprising, I don’t think he is actively trying to injure but Embiid is by FAR a reckless player when it comes to defence.

That would require humility and personal accountability, which is not in his vocabulary. He quit on LSU, the Australian team, the Sixers, and now the Nets. The signs were already there as far as his character goes. He won't be in the league after this contract is he continues to act this way.

The thing about Jared Dudley is he knows he's an average NBA player at best, but he's been around the game to see how the truly great players operate. What he lacks in his own physical ability in comparison to his peers, he has IQ and experience. Let's not forget though. Jared averages 4.9 PPG, but in a pickup game, he will absolutely become the second coming of Kareem against any of us.

Saying Jared Dudley was valuable for more than scoring and minutes is true for sure. He's always been a smart guy, defending players in interviews, saying the right stuff, etc. It's the same reason the Heat have Haslem on the roster right now, the same reason lots of old guys stick around for years after their useful playing days are done. It's a guy who can push players in practice, someone the players can talk to, and someone who's obviously going to be a coach, GM, or other front office guy as soon as his career is over. If you listen to the more introspective basketball podcasts that ask players who helped them the most, it's always Jared Dudley or Ish Smith or Udonis Haslem. Very rarely is it the star player or famous head coach. Guys like Dudley are really valuable even if they play 2 minutes of garbage time and never hit a big shot again.

I love how everyone blamed us Sixers fans for Ben Simmons sucking. When in reality, we were the ones who defended him the most. We got pissed off when people said he can’t shoot and said stuff like “yeah he doesn’t have a jumper but he’s elite at every other facet of the game”. But when he choked against the Hawks and the fans were justifiably angry at him, you were all like “Ben just needs to play for a less toxic fan base who will actually support him! Once he gets out, he’ll be the star we all know he can be!” Well, look what happened. It’s obvious that he only cared about basketball to get that big contract, and as soon as he got paid, he stopped caring more than any player I’ve ever seen. He’s a disgrace to sports and I’m glad that he’s not our problem anymore, even if the Sixers are choking frauds.

What I found interesting about Simmons, especially last season, is that his FG% is still relatively the same, so basically, what changed in him was his aggression, one of the most important aspects to being a superstar that's hard to quantify. Eventually, the league figured out how to guard him and he didn't develop news skills to deal with that.
@jeffreyval9665
@jeffreyval9665 11 ай бұрын
He's got about a 3ft range and was scared to even be a part of the offense in the few games he played. For being such a big guy he plays scared and gets pushed around and bullied by guys a foot shorter than him. Probably the most useless player in the game and his defense is very overrated.

I remember when Simmons was coming into the league, my friends were jumping up and down talking about how much of a "transcendental" talent he was. I didn't buy into the hype because he could never shoot in college. You can't be a franchise player and not be able to partake in the final minutes of a close game because you can't shoot, not even free throws. Unless you're such a dominant force in the paint the other team is forced to double and you put the ball in the hands of a reliable shooter on the team. He always struck me as someone who could do really well as a tertiary option on offense, but the media sold him as a flag bearing franchise player and he clearly ain't that!

I never liked Simmons either. Actually I been thinking about it - the NBA has gone full circle now - the age of the super athlete (started by MJ) is now over. The age of the super skilled big player is now here. Simmons was the prototypical modern NBA player - he is a relic from a now bygone era. The super athlete that can play some basketball..

Clara here- I owe you guys a recipe for Beef Coins. Okay, let's start with a thin cut of steak, eye of round? use cookie cutters to get a circle of beef. Might have to press very hard. Throw those circles in a hot over for a long time, let's say 450, 30 min? Enough so the beef shrinks and hardens and dries out and gives ya a solid little coin. Look, it was a literary device not a culinary masterpiece! Maybe a good dog treat? I still don't understand how professional players can be bad at free throws. Its one of the few parts of the game that you can entirely prepare for on your own. Like, you get paid ridiculous amounts of money, just go to the gym for a couple weeks in the offseason and just shoot free throws for a few hours. Its wild to me that there is any part of the game that a high school player can be better at than a pro.

Middleton, Booker, even Delo. Simmons still could be a top player in the league if he had someone like dudley as a teammate or even if he just didnt let his ego get him. Kinda sad really esp playing a few older 2ks like 17-18-19 were he had insane potential and was good and worth a massive contract

It's interesting how different Dudley and Ben are. Ben, when people thought he was good, always wanted to be the star, and always wanted everything to run through him. On the other hand, Dudley was fine coaching/mentoring from behind the scenes, contributing to his team without much recognition from the fans. One guy wants to live the superstar/rockstar life and doesn't really care about winning, while the other is just concerned with helping his team win in any way he can.
