I’m just going to pile right on, Tracy was fantastic. Maybe she needs to start the best dad-gum seed show on the radio... and internet. I’ll also say that the info/wisdom/experience that the Hoss brand throws out every week is invaluable to me. I’ve been gardening 20 years and learn something new weekly. Thank you for making one of my God given joys more joyful!

I think Tracy was your most interesting guest since the "change". The Sweet Hearts tomato sounds interesting, though I'm short on space this year. I normally grow an heirloom cherry tomato called "Isis Candy" specifically because I like the strong savory (umami) flavor that it has. A hybrid variety bred for that flavor might well make up for the main shortcoming of the heirloom variety: its low productivity.

I'm growing the Little Birdie series Compact Determinate Tomatoes this year. They are beautiful, dark green leaves, stout little plants and I am delighted to be trying them. Right now they are putting out blossom's. I planted a lot and have given some away as gift's. I have also done the same with the Hoss lunch box pepper's. One of my customer's text me yesterday, so happy to see blossom's on her plant's. I have never seen such healthy looking tomato plant's in my life as these little cherries. I did put a handful of pelleted gypsum in the pot at transplant.

Don't forget about those of us who like to grow indeterminate tomatoes. Zone 7b, we plant in mid May and have tomatoes thru October. Would have been nice to hear what the top indeterminates are and why.
@AkiyamaPottery
@AkiyamaPottery 3 жыл бұрын
If you got tomatoes through October, then you must already have some solid varieties! i'm out in Tulsa and we need heat resistance out of our indeterminates. yellow pear, purple cherokee, and black Krim do well around here. any indeterminates that hoss runs with, i'm sure will perform great if you get a lot of summer heat. I've moved towards succession planting determinates to reduce pruning and get two rushes of tomatoes rather than that steady flow.

Wonderful show. I hope you can have Tracy back as well as the gentleman from Monterey. Sakata is top of the line seed. I live in 5b at 6500' elevation but I grow in a hoop house so I need "heat set" varieties. This year it's Sakata's Bella Rose, Roadster, Red Snapper, and Tachi, and their Grand Marshall variety from "J's". Add in Summerpick. Going to trial them all against each other for vine ripe yield and flavor. Will report results.

Great show, very informative! I only recently found your channel and have been binge watching ever since. My question is: Is there a winter cover crop I can plant in my small backyard garden that will help with my rotation challenges? I mostly plant just tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers, carrots and radishes. I'm in zone 6 in the Colorado "high mountain desert" at 5000 ft. Thanks again for all you do!
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 жыл бұрын
Here is a section from a recent news letter. Hope this helps. Need more nitrogen in your soil? How about weed suppression and erosion control? Crimson Clover is a cool-season cover crop that has these benefits, plus more! A Crimson Clover is the perfect cover crop to rotate before any heavy-feeding vegetable crops. One of the best cover crops for aerating compacted soils and also improving water infiltration is Tillage Radish. A cool-season cover crop, Tillage Radish reduces pest pressure and improves soil quality. The deeply rooted radishes create air pockets within the soil to increase aeration. Needing to add more organic matter or biomass to your soil? Certain cover crops will break down quickly in the soil, providing nutrients but leaving little "lasting" biomass. Some will break down more slowly tieing up nutrients but build stable, long-lasting organic matter. The White Dutch Clover provides BOTH benefits. White Dutch Clover also helps with weed suppression. Marvel Chickpea is one of the best cover crops for reducing and controlling soil erosion. It produces a deep taproot that helps to break hardpans and condition soils for future planning. Not only is the Marvel Chickpea great for soil coverage, weed suppression, it is also used to make "Hummus". Pest management is important when picking a cover crop. The Broadleaf Mustard is one of the most popular due to the fact that it releases chemicals into the soil to reduce and suppress nematodes, and help manage other soil pests and pathogens. Broadleaf Mustard is also the best cover crop for reducing harmful soil fungi

I grow maybe ten varieties of okra each year in USA zone 6b, northern Delaware, and they all grow to 6-7 ft tall, some to 8. So Jambalaya for me is much taller than yours. Maybe we have a longer season(planted May, grows into late September, then just slows down, stops fruiting) that lets them get taller?

Hopefully this is a decent question. Never had luck with fall tomatoes. Should I be planting determinate tomatoes for the fall tomatoes? I am thinking I might have luck if I use the seeds yall talked about with the fewer days to maturity. Also when do you plant fall tomatoes?

It is according to where you are located. Here in zone 8, we plant them in the greenhouse in July
