We added a new carrot variety to grow this year and it is doing extremely well. So well it might just outperform one of our favorite carrot varieties.

Travis, here’s a tip for wearing your scarf and liking it. Gather or fold it into a long narrow shape and fold in half lengthwise. Loop it around your neck and pull the tails through the loop. You can leave the tails hanging or tuck them into your shirt or jacket. It’ll stay put, won’t get in your way, will keep you way warmer, and is easy to toss on.

I am always guessing at this as so many factors are at play, temperature, sunlight, wind, etc that can vary from day to day here in zone 8. It won't be long before I am hardening off my beets and kolhrabi and have tomatoes and peppers in the near future. Thanks guys!

I found that planting the carrots thick like Travis does gives me all sizes, which works great for me to have some for stews and some that are ready for just eating. I can empathize with Greg on his trouble growing them because we surprisingly found they would not grow in the spring for us but grew crazy in the fall. A question I have is about the Ammonium Sulfate fertilizer. Since it is suited to help the onion and garlic families to produce, would this work also if you use it on potatoes?

In most of our stores here in Oz, only cooking carrots are available or occasionally overpriced organic morr moderate sized ones. The usual carrots are overgrown to the maximum, are fairly hard and not very sweet. Restaurants like to serve very immature carrots, braised, as a focal point of a dish. Carrots are one of those vegetables that can be used from very small to fully grown. Good that. I've been doing more regular carrot planting, as even the smallest of spaces open up, as carrots will not outgrow their welcome, next to any crops. Even freed up space from a cabbage or a few luttuce can produce quite a few carrots. Would love one of your plots but space does not allow. Still want to grow for my family for continuous harvest and use.

I plan on planting corn for the first time this year. I have 20-20-20 and also purchased allganic nitrate mostly for the corn. For corn, is there a reason to use one fertilizer over the other? For future reference, could I get away with just using the 20-20-20? Thanks
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 жыл бұрын
Start out with the 20-20-20 when the plants are about 4-6" tall, then side dress with the Allganic at the first hilling. We'll then usually feed with 20-20-20 at least two more times as the plants grow.

I've had trouble for with my storage onions (Patterson) I start from seed bolting before they are a nice size. I live in north ID where I have big temperatures swings and always thought that was the cause. But now I'm wondering if it has been happening because when I start the seeds inside I have them on 16 hours of light. I've never paid attention, but the outside light is probably less than that when I put them out. If it is less, do you think that could be the cause, tricking them into thinking they need to bolt early? Thanks!
@gardeningwithhoss

Could be something to do with that. We recommend simulating trying to simulate the outside daylight hours, or going for no more than 12 hours a day on inside seedlings.

Will you fells come out with a humidity dome for the 162 trays like you have for the deluxe kit? Something low profile that has the two red vents?

Not likely for those. I actually moved my peppers inside the office and they all germinated pretty dang well on a heat mat without any dome.

Hi guys, love your show and look forward to it every week. You guys recommend 20-20-20. The Old Alabama Gardener uses 13-13-13. Others say 10-10-10 is best. The fellow at my local feed and seed store swears by the "Belgian Formula" (13-17-11). What gives? And if you add up the percentages of each of N-P-K of any of these formulations, those numbers don't total 100%, so what's comprising the rest of the fertilizer? (My math is sound, I'm from Georgia albeit derived from Alabamians).
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 жыл бұрын
10-10-10 is generally a granular fertilizer and more of a slow release option. 20-20-20 is water soluble and best-delivered in liquid form. 20-20-20 will give the quickest pop to the plants.

Hi guys, I have a question for the next video if you have time to answer it. If I was to till up 4 good size plots, is there a recommended crop rotation I would utilize bi annually, or annually? Do some crops from a previous year benefit the soil for different species and are there other crops that should never be planted following a specific species? Also, what crops would you pull from the roots and which would you chop and or till into the soil after harvest? A brief best practice on this would be appreciated, Thanks!
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 жыл бұрын
Just try not to plant the same crop family in the same plot in consecutive years. And try to use cover crops between plantings. Don't leave cucurbits or nightshades in the plots. Pull those plants when done and put them in the burn pile.

I have seen that before, but never really worried about. They seem to taste just fine despite the fuzz. Probably is a result of the moist, shaded environment created by the dense carrot tops.

Mr. Hoss, you're so funny!!😄 I inadvertently purchased some elephant garlic from you all at the wrong time. Do you think it will be a waste of my time to plant it right now? It looks great, btw. I live in NC zone 8a. I'm hopeful because it's been so cold. For whatever reason, planting garlic and onions always seemed so mysterious to me. So I've never had much luck. Can't wait to get my potatoes 😋!

I have a question. I watched a video a while back about bean varieties. I purchased some “Kentucky wonder pole beans” from my local farm stand that has been around for many years. They are the string beans with the string. I’ve grown up growing these with my elders in the family for many, many years. The best memories I have are sitting with my mamaw and her sister snapping and stringing these beans, and later my mamaw would cook up a bunch with potatoes (best ever!). My question is what variety do I actually have?? I have saved seeds from these beans over the last few years and they have always been prolific but I am not really enjoying the strings as I am not very good at getting them out and always end up pulling a string out while eating Lol.

Just to clarify, yall’s DTM is from seed sown and not transplant date? Cabbages as the example
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on the crop. For traditionally transplanted crops, the DTM is often the date from transplant. For traditionally direct-seeded crops, it is from seeding. DTMs can be quite confusing. We just go by the DTM date that the breeder provides.
