Thank you for sharing this information Denis! Just to clarify, the "4 distinct categories" of swing/la pompe rhythm which you discuss here kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5KXhYaXiMqFoLc are: 1. No accents on 2 & 4 (as in Tiger Rag in 1934) 2. With accents on 2 & 4 3. With accents on 2 & 4, upstroke on 1 & 3 as well as alternating bass treble strings (as on Miss Annabelle Lee & You're Driving Me Crazy). 4. Dry rhythm, short quarter notes, more growl (Les Yeux Noirs 1940, Blues en mineur 1949)

First heard of Efferge Ware in a book about Grant Green. He took his only formal lessons from Mr. Ware. I also saw a picture of Ware with Charlie Christian on Goodman's bandstand. That makes a direct line from Christian to Green.

I have been listening to your detailed history discussions on KZbin (no peeking because I'm driving). This makes it a bit difficult to go back & find something again, or to find specific topics. Have you discussed the distinctive percussive chord stab techniques (I don't know what else to call them) many in this genre use? (for example, Dorado Schmitt, Joscho Stefan, etc...the very physical syncopated style). Thanks for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm.

On the time question. Swing happens when the tempo varies and the band adjusts. Flatt and Scruggs had two tempos on Roll in my Sweet Baby's Arms; using one for the vocals, and motoring up to a faster tempo for the solos, changing between the two so smoothly that it's undetectable unless you're looking for it.
