When you started asking him to do 7th chords he had already been doing them for quite a while. Probably best to just sit back and let him go. Funny that the whole thing was kind of boring and basic for the first 7 minutes and then he started to actually play and the whole thing took off like a rocket. Wow. What a testament to the difference between knowing your arpeggios and chords in all their positions, and actually having a personal vocabulary with those tools as the foundation. The first part is a big task, but eventually achievable by anyone willing to do the work. The second part is the magic that really can’t be taught. But examples like this one are good!
