When you encounter dense trash while prospecting, its important to be able to use your detector's discrimination reliably. This video explains the secrets of how you can get accurate readings on your discrimination settings and be sure that what your detector says is trash is trash and what is not iron is not iron. This will help you find more gold.
For those who want to learn more about Prospecting and finding gold check out my book, Fists full of Gold. It’s an encyclopedia of everything on the topic of prospecting. It’s available on from High Plains Prospectors. (Affiliate) You can find it at:

Good tips Chris....I don't have the GM1000 but do have an older VLF gold detector with a discriminator that I can apply these tips to. Once while hunting a trash dump near the mining camp I found a button of silver that was mistakenly tossed out with the trash.

Those trash targets could be covering up the sound of a nugget underneath. Just something to think about. I run a GPX 5000 and run it with no discrimination. I bought your book and think it is awesome! Well done!!

I've watched both Australian and American prospectors talking about the gold monster 1000. In Australia they don't have the same amount of mineralization and trash that you have here in the USA. I guess it's because the I don't care factor comes into play. Australia has most of its detectable gold in dirt, sometimes in sand and rock. So it's easier to find. Here in the good old USA the prospector has to compete with trash and lots of it. The small coil is a great tool for those trashy places. Me, I still use an 11 inch coil. It's how I use this. (BIG SECRET). Anyway MR. Ralph. I find your opinions on this subject to be quite refreshing and your knowledge with the subject of metal detecting comes into line as my own. I've only been metal detecting for about 40 years. I started out in NZ with a garrett GTA X500 which at that time was pretty high tech. I've detected most of the north island, parts of Australia and now the USA. This country and all its trash will screw with your head. 😆
@ChrisRalph
@ChrisRalph 2 жыл бұрын
Overall, the Australian goldfields that I prospected had much worse mineralization than is typically found in the US. I've never been to NZ. The US is more trashy, that is true, but there are gold bearing places in OZ with bad trash. I was out detecting and finding gold and trash with the gold Monster and the large coil in California this last weekend.

Hi Chris, my advice would be dig everything. Frequently gold and nails lay in the same hole. I have found loads of gold next to rubbish. Plus others have walked away. Cheers HH Australia
@ChrisRalph
@ChrisRalph 5 жыл бұрын
And as I said on the video, most of the time dig-it-all is the best way to go. But there are places with very heavy trash where you would be digging more than a hundred pieces of trash for every nugget. The dig-it-all guys just walk away from these places. The discrimination of a good vlf is the other option for intense trash places. Don't know what part of Australia you are in, but my experience in WA was that there are very, very few places with that kind of intense trash.

I have used my Gold Bug II on a few occasions and the signal on gold (a gold ring) seems to sound more sharp than iron or hot rocks. Am I imagining this? BTW your Fists Full of Gold has been of massive help. Thanks!
@ChrisRalph
@ChrisRalph 5 жыл бұрын
Glad you like the book, the signal on non-ferrous targets like lead or gold is different from ferrous targets like iron or even hot rocks. However because Iron, non-ferrous and hot rocks all come in every possible size, its really hard to use that difference in ear based discrimination.
@dumpbear0
@dumpbear0 4 жыл бұрын
I have found with my GB 2 that a gold target sounds as a "zip-zip" while iron or magnetite will sound as a "wa-wa". Give it a try side by side and tell me if I'm crazy or special,lol.

A "i dont know signal" could be a ferrous object masking a non ferrous one. If you dig a iffy signal and pull a ferrous object , recheck the hole. Always recheck the hole anyway.

Hi Chris, my brother and I purchased a Minelab G.M.1000 a few months ago. I have a question about when the detector makes a noise but doesn't go either way on the display screen. I started to address what that is when your camera stopped recording. Where you saying that when it does that, that it means it doesn't know and you should dig that? Thank you.
@ChrisRalph
@ChrisRalph 2 жыл бұрын
If it gives a beep but no indication of iron or not iron, it is because the signal is too weak to give an indication. This is essentially the same as when it bounces back and forth. The detector simply does not know and you must dig down to get a stronger signal.

Would the goldbug pro work nearly as well as the gold monster 1000 in these dumps? I found this video really informative! Thank you.
@ChrisRalph
@ChrisRalph 4 жыл бұрын
No, it would not work as well. The problem is that most hard rock gold is small and wiry or mossy. The GB Pro is less sensitive than the GM1000 and will miss gold when used in a mine dump.

You'd have to ask the manufacturer. For all practical purposes in using it out in the field, it does not make any difference.
