My take away tip... Angle the dowels.. Thanks Chad, that was definitely a 'Knock out', video.. (Sorry, someone had to say it). 😁

Excellent rundown here! Great job and thanks for the advice! It actually would have been far more useful if I had found this video a couple of weeks ago, but still much appreciated nonetheless. I just recently finished building a Nicholson inspired workbench in my garage. Along with the (possibly excessive) amount of bearers I shoved into the underside of the bench top and the doweled half lap lower leg bearers I decided to roll with a half lap dovetail planing brace, much like the one on Richard Maguire’s joiners bench. Except in this instance, it was quite problematic. All due to my poor planning, my decision to include the planing brace was a rather late afterthought, and was faced with the challenge of making drastic modifications to the quadruple doweled and glued half lap joint on that side. I made it through with surprisingly good results, but still wish I thought about it before 😂 the angled locking dowels are an awesome idea! Looking forward to seeing more great content in the future. You’re doing an awesome job! Kind regards from Australia! 🙏🏻

I got one of the chip carving knives because of your recommendation. I don't use it as much as you do but I certainly like it and I'm glad I got it. Cheers Chad, stay healthy.

Glad to hear it, Mark. I don't do dovetails without it. But then again, I do a LOT of dovetails. :-)

Nice informative video Chad. I'd love to see your take on how you would do the same work with hand tools. I was glad to read you have a sponsor for your newsletter. I'll be sure to look their way when it comes time for me to buy my next finish. Also, your post on making your mark was very touching and a great tribute to someone who sounds like he was a great man. Sorry for your loss.

Great video Chad. Your techniques for the half lap dovetail are very helpful. I second your recommendation of the Marpels chisels. I have a set and have found them to be very good. Last year on another video you mentioned the chip carving knife. I bought one and it has become a very valuable tool in my shop. I’ve used it a lot on some recent projects. Hope all is well with you and your family.

Another great video. I've been meaning to ask, have you ever used that torch sitting on the shelf behind you? I've got one kind of like it that my grandfather had. Mine has a little area on top that according to my late uncle you filled with gas, lit the gas and that helped bring the fuel up to the torch. He said my grandma use to take the kids out of the house whenever he used it, which would have been almost 100 years ago.

Great video on half lap dovetails. Would utilizing the draw bore technique improve the firmness of the joints?
@ChadStanton4 жыл бұрын
Yes i'm sure it would. However, if you wanted to knock it part, you probably won't get it back out.
@mwrcrft4 жыл бұрын
@@ChadStanton Point taken. Both of my benches are knock down-able. My split top Roubo with Benchcrafted vises top sections are some heavy chunks and it is only knock down in the sense that it can be taken apart to move. My naked Nicholson with plans from Lost Arts is truly knock down and portable but it has plates and bolts and when I lost a bolt I had to go buy another one I couldn't just make a peg from scrap. So I will be interested on your take of the knock down bench when the video comes out.

I used that joint on a chair I made. I glued it in because I didn’t need to take it back apart. Great idea to angle dowels. I think you can do that with nails to get same wedging action in other applications.
