By the time you get to Mistland weapons, they are going to be OP in most lower biomes no matter which you use. Some of the plains creatures can still put up a fight, but pretty much anywhere else you'll just mow everything down, bosses included. I would go with the most effective weapons in the Mistlands, possibly consider Plains and not worry about the others.

Another problem with ai not taking that into account. It's no brainer it's knife or spear. Both can be used aggressively to attack at mid range with secondary attacks. Both are very fast, culminating in a snowball effect of aggressive tactics rather than passive blocking. Then I think atgeir for it's crowd control. Then axes and swords. The maces are least of my favorite, their slow, and not nearly as hard hitting as swords like krom. Axe I rate higher because it's a utility gear that can work as side arm more so now that it has secondary that can hit something below you in uneven ground.

It's a very flawed analysys. Every plains weapon will oneshot everything in meadows, forest and burial chambers. Ocean should not be taken into account since you use arrows on the serpent anyway. Swamp too since again, if you are at mistlands level or "porcupine acquisition level" you almost onehsot everything there anyway too. The only biomes that should be taken into account are plains and mistlands and in this calculation porcupine falls flat.

By a similar process I arrived at the Himminafl since nothing is resistant to lightning, which it scales over pierce with levels. It probably loses in the calcs due to less weakness to it, but there's often ways to get a wet debuff on enemies Edit: If you rock it as a mage, it's your battle-staff and you got all elements covered

I've got to say that I disagree with this analysis pretty strongly. If literally every single enemy in the meadows, black forest, swamps, and mountains were completely 100% immune to the staff of embers, it would still be a really good weapon because its very useful against seekers and fulings. Why should I care how many creatures in the game a weapon is super effective against if there are only a handful of creatures in the game that pose a serious threat to me at the point in time when that weapon becomes available? I mostly care how it performs against that subset of creatures. By your method, you're saying that the ability of a weapon to gain a damage type advantage against greydwarves, boars, and skeletons is a meaningful factor in determining if a weapon is the best in the game....that's very silly and it isn't useful. The staff of embers is one of the best weapons in the game because its a late game weapon that does big numbers, does AOE, is ranged, and works well against the current roster of late game threats (basically everything you could want from a weapon). Another problem: in your plot, fire looks pretty good, while spirit looks pretty trash, right? Well, I'm feeling fairly confident that when the Ashlands comes out, most (if not all) of the enemies there will be either immune or resistant to fire. And on top of that, since the ashlands enemies all look like undead, I think its extremely likely that most of them will take damage from spirit. When that biome comes out, the plot you made will only change a little because only a few new enemies are being added relative to the entire pool of enemies from the rest of the game, but those are the enemies we will actually care about. Using your criteria, the new Spinesnap bow in the mistlands is pretty trash because it does pierce and spirit, two "bad" damage types. But in the ashlands, that might be really good, especially if you're using the bow to shoot frost arrows, which seem quite likely to be very effective against fire-themed enemies. And for the record, if we want to evaluate what the best weapon in the game is overall, based on its performance throughout the entire game against all of the enemies in the game, the obvious answer is the finewood bow. Like, nothing else even comes close. You can acquire the finewood bow from basically the very beginning of the game, but you can easily use the finewood bow to kill things like bosses, fulings, and seekers, since you can equip any arrows in it, and since it is a ranged weapon that allows you to hit enemies without being hit. I can't think of any other weapon in the game that you can acquire in the bronze age but is still useable in the late game. And since it is an early game weapon, it actually does make sense to care about how it does against things like greydwarfs and skeletons. Which, by the way, is pretty funny, since I would say that I've killed more greydwarves and skeletons with a finewood bow than I have with most other weapons in the game, despite the fact that it does piercing damage and doesn't gain a type advantage against those enemies. By your own criteria, if being super effective against the most amount of enemies possible is important, then in general bows must be really good, because you can change their damage type based on what arrows you're shooting.

I admire the time and effort, however I think this analysis is very flawed and could be much better if we adjust for enemy strength. Let me elaborate: Frankly once you reach Plains/Mistlands no blackforest creature is ever going to give you trouble anymore (since we look for a best overall weapon independent of progression). It doesn’t matter if a graydwarf is weak to fire or resistant to something else, plains weapons will one shot it anyways. This is why just looking at resistances/weaknesses only really matters for the later bioms (arguably not even swamp). Thus my first thought was a simply remove the early bioms and all its creatures from this analysis entirely because they frankly dont matter. Again, who cares what a greydwarf or neck is weak/resistant to. However an even better way I think would be to use a weighter system instead of removing them entirely. For example rate a creatures „relevance“ on a scale from 1-100. To figure out how important a creature is for the ranking we could take a look at HP/WeaponsDamage ratio. Thus, a boar doesn’t matter because it will always be one-shotted anyways, while for example a Lox is a much more relevant opponent as it will take many more hits. Just a thought.

The only problem I see is that to use the staff, you have to eat mana food. To use the mace you need stam food. So swaping between weapons means your food choices will affect the effectiveness of each weapon. This also applies to armor selection. So using 2 different melee weapons allows one armor set, and less food reqirements as opposed to using the fire staff and a melee weapon.
@JonathanUsmar
@JonathanUsmar Жыл бұрын
I'm convinced the game so far is actually the tutorial. Each new biome you want different damage types to be effective. Each new light armour set buffs (and therefore encourage/teaches) a different combat style; but then gets discouraged in later biomes due to its lack of tier-appropriate-armour. Swamp basically demands a club; also a sword if you want to fight abominations. Then it gives you the Archer set, encouraging you to learn Archery before you'll need it in the mountains. Frostner is there to teach you about frost's slow effect, and it's there to make the swamp easy now that you've levelled past it. Porcupine is specifically for fighting lox, they assume your main combat skill is still clubs at this stage, and you can easily make a porcupine before you're ready to fight goblins, so you need a piercing-club to farm lox meat. And then you need to actually learn weapons properly (attack timings and distances) to overcome fulings. Then in the mistlands, melee is brutal but doable with what you've just practiced. But you need to learn magic to make the zone easy. I hope this means an endgame where either all playstyles are viable, or possibly even an endgame where all playstyles are necessary. I hope it also means a whole new array of armour sets in the endgame. (Unless... Are they trying to tell us mages should be tougher than archers and rogues???)
@YodaWasSith
@YodaWasSith Жыл бұрын
Well, mages traditionally are much more powerful than archers and rogues. I'm convinced that the game is encouraging group play. Every single fight that I can imagine in the game benefits from a group dynamic. One player focuses frost output, one focuses fire, one focuses blunt, absolutely nothing can escape stagger long enough to hit anybody in the party. Toss a protection staff in there and y'all are invincible.
@JonathanUsmar
@JonathanUsmar Жыл бұрын
@@YodaWasSith I'm not sure what you mean by "traditionally"? Do you mean in novels? In games classes tend to be balanced. The point I'm making is that it's strange to have a gear system that only supports particular classes/combat-styles briefly. It's strange to play as a rogue and then level out of the class to become a mage. And even if we accept your premises that mages are normally "more powerful" than rogues/archers, they don't normally wear stronger armour than rogues/archers; and yet that is what is happening here.
@YodaWasSith
@YodaWasSith Жыл бұрын
@@JonathanUsmar I mean in virtually every fantasy setting, ever. DnD, books and movies like LoTR, in WoW, even most scenarios in Runescape, a mage will hold a significant advantage over you even if you're wearing magic resistant gear. Mages frequently experience a type of power which enables them to become time gods, essentially immortal because they control the flow of time around them. Mages traditionally have access to teleportation, elemental control, shielding and mobility control, and they have the ability to completely shut down entire areas of maps with relatively simple spells. They forge the most powerful armors, they enchant the most powerful trinkets and gems, they provide the most powerful potions and foods. If you're at all denying that mages are by and large the most powerful characters in every sci-fi universe, you obviously don't read much or play many games. "It's strange to play as a rogue and then level out of the class to become a mage." That's not what happens in Valheim. I have multiple sets of Fenris gear, and I use them frequently in the Mistlands and Plains biomes. I also have multiple sets of trollhide armor, and I use them when I'm mining copper and tin in the black forest. Sneaking, speed, and magic all have their utility in Valheim. And yet, magic is, as is traditional, significantly more powerful than all of them. "even if we accept your premises that mages are normally "more powerful" than rogues/archers" You're trying to posit that a mage, who is typically immortal and has control of the elements, can shield itself, can brew/drink powerful potions, can cook and eat performance enhancing foods, can completely obliterate acres of maps, is on the same level as a rogue who, at best, can become invisible and perform a powerful backstab? Than an archer who, at best, can shoot an arrow from really far away? The ways in which a mage can dominate both of these characters are completely endless. For the one or two attack styles a rogue/archer has, a mage has 30 different ways to deny them. "they don't normally wear stronger armour than rogues/archers; and yet that is what is happening here." First, no, that isn't what's happening here. Obviously you haven't made the eitr weave robes, or you just don't understand how armor works in the game? The full set of eitr-weave offers only 56 armor compared to the heavy carapace set which, with a cape, offers 106 armor. You've also required to consume 2 food slots to enable the use of Eitr, which means your health will very likely never be over 100, because the third slot is best suited for stamina. Second, the mage benefits from significantly better armor because it directly absorbs 200+ damage with its bubble (+5 per level so at 35 blood magic which I have at the moment, 375 damage) for 1 minute which I can keep up indefinitely, and provide for any number of my allies. Lastly, what I was referring to when I said "traditionally" was the broad encompassing concept of magic which is referenced in Norse texts. Mages are traditionally the most powerful beings in existence. It just so happens that that concept has survived into sci-fi, though attempts have been made to balance their power, it's still true that they're the most powerful. Just look at the WoW PvP leaderboards right now. 3 mages with 91.2% win rate, 93.8% win rate, and 95.3% win rate. They are, as is tradition, dominating the leaderboards and it's not even close. Because that's realistic.

This is a pretty poor use of available data, no weighting for attack speed, additional effects, stamina use nor any weighting done by biome, meadows and black forest should be nearly irrelevent to the final determination short of trolls perhaps. Damage types are only one part of how you pick your weapons and this methodology uses them as the only criteria, and not even well(no adjustment for easier biomes).

how about taking into consideration: - the total health of a monster, so if one hit kills it though it is weak or resistant. - the population of monsters in the biome. A weapon can be ineffective for let's say a golem in the mountains, but you're mostly going to fight wolves and drakes. - ranged/melee. Please kill a serpent with a porcupine, and upload the video. - aoe/ cone/ single target. If you swarmed with wolves aoe, cone attacks might be more useful. - attack speed - one handed/ two handed

I think the atgeir is the overall most useful weapon from early game all the way up until the late game and even during the late game. Obviously, you won't use this during boss fights as there are better options, but because of its CC and stun lock possibilities, it's by far the most useful during your entire adventure through Valheim. Even while using magic in the late game I always have my 2-handed weapon on the hot bar.

Even if they are resistant you can still control fights with its reach. And that problem of resistance goes away when you get the thunder poker, enemy toaster 9000. Everything gets deleted by that thing.

Play through each biome with your favorite weapon. Then you will understand the weaknesses of that weapon and see which weaknesses need to be overcome by using a different weapon. Doesn't take long too achieve this and end up with a very short list of complimentary weapons for your favorite weapon. Experience will show you the flaws in the data presented in this video. I applaud the effort and went down this path myself at a point. But terms like weakness and resistance don't mean the same thing across the board. Experience showed me the flaws in this line of thinking.

Thank you for putting together and organizing this analysis! I appreciate all the work and planning that went into it... that said, I don't agree with your definition of "strongest" in this case; as I would not prefer taking a porcupine into the mists, even if it were effective in every other biome. A weapon's strength, imo, should take into account the threat the enemy poses, and if your weapon choice(s) are not great against more dangerous enemies, then it doesn't matter it can one-shot every other lesser creature in the game (as most Mistland grade weapons do anyway). I will recognize and respect the effectiveness of the Staff of Embers though, as it is ranged, deals heavy damage in an area, and converts Eitr into damage and recharges independently of Stamina -- aspects which outweigh any resistances/immunities other creatures may have to it. For me, whatever combo is effective against, Seekers, Seeker Soldiers, Gjall, and Ticks, and has all-around good damage stats is what I'd consider the "strongest" since I'm not that concerned about the resistances other creatures might have against the combo's damage type(s). Personally, I've found the Himmin Afl to be the most effective with my fighting style. It's great at stunning/parrying and quickly eliminating the highest-threat enemies so far, except the Gjall (obviously), and it's also a small light source! If I could only pick one other weapon, it would be the arbalest with the sole reason being that I don't need to have Eitr available to use it. This combo would provide me with the versatility and damage output I'd be content with to deal with each biome, and survive in nearly every circumstance (being low on food, for example)... if I were to carry more weapons, then the Staff of Embers would definitely be the next pick. Anyway, I still found your breakdown interesting, and it was neat seeing your AI/ChatGPT results -- getting back the _Porcupine_ was unexpected! =)

Staff of Embers is probably the biggest game changer in Valheim, because it's basically the sledgehammer but with range attacks. Generally speaking I'm always carrying 4-5 weapons to cover all my bases. Swords are probably the most overtuned at the moment because they currently don't have a multihit penalty, so you get all the benefits of wielding shield in the offhand while still being able to do multi-target dmg. Having at least one AoE weapon in your toolkit is very important I think.

I love the Porcupine, it's my favourite weapon! It does a decent amount of damage in any situation as well, and it's relatively easy to craft when you hit the Plains level. I do use a knife and a bow too: the knife especially for trolls and abominations, and the bow for any flying creatures. Other than that, I use a Porcupine and in difficult situations I add a black metal tower shield for that extra tankyness. And as a bonus, the Porcupine like some other weapons emit a decent amount of light. I rarely ever use a torch or dvergr circlet...

What a shame that this video is effectively a waste of time because it fails to take into account two things; monster health Vs weapon damage and monster distance. It doesn't matter if a weapon is only 50% effective against a certain monster if it will still do enough damage to kill it in one hit. It also doesn't matter if a weapon is super effective against a monster if it is a melee weapon and the monster will always fight at range (like a drake for example).

This. (other typical issue example is the sea snake that you'll kill either with a bow of stranded with litterally any weapon you want) Also, it does not take into account the "coverage" of each weapon, i.e. you should probably be better with 2 weapons that covers each 50% of the creatures but with a really good efficiency (and possibly a really really bad efficiency for the other 50%), than a single "all around but not that efficient" weapon. Typically, the conclusion is two blunt weapons with either +pierce or +fire. It's probably way more efficient to have for instance a blunt+fire on one side and a frost+pierce on the other, to cover everything way better. (I have no specific weapons in mind, that's just for the illustration)

I think the 2 weapons makes sense, BUT the commodity of long range should be taken into consideration. This means the 2 Weapons I would be carrying around are the best weapon for the highest Biome achieved and a long range weapon. All other areas, enemies and dungeons are negligible and shouldn't be considered in the rating. You forgot one detail on all your work, the number of damage, even if an enemy is resistant to a certain damage type, some weapon have enought damage to kill them, for example, black forest creatures are immune to poison, using the axe with poison damage will be effective against them, cause it's an axe of mistland biome, so you can ignore the poison damage. I feel like the thought process of grabbing the two most effective damage types and finding a weapon for each is flawed for "best 2 weapons to take on your adventure", because, even though they have the highest "effectiveness" they also have high num of resistances. And when talking about something like Staff of Frost it doesn't matter if your doing x2 dmg when they all die in 1 hit anyway without it. To me it makes more sense to grab the two types with the lowest number of resistances/immunities then your sure your not going to have to deal with 0.0% > 0.5% effectiveness (aka resist against both fire and blunt), aka the situation you really want to avoid at all cost when your running around with only 2 weapons. And in that case it looks like "Lightning" is god, and then frost(9), blunt(9) are even, with blunt probably winning since it has less "immunities". Unfortunately there isn't really any "thunder only" or "thunder, +blunt or +frost" weapons, only the Himminafl which has mostly pierce mixed in :(. So next is looking for "Blunt" and "Frost", so I'd say best would probably be: 1) Demolisher / Porcupine + Staff of Frost / Frost Arrow+Bow 2) Non-Late Game: Frosnir does both frost and blunt damage probably + Any Bow ((this is the setup I used right up to mistlands before switching to magic)). *) This isn't even counting that wet monsters (raining, in water like swamp) get 1.5x from frost damage. If your solo I feel like 1) would do better than the "blunt + fire" as I think there are less monsters resistant to both frost and blunt. But yeah I'd like to see some more Lightning weapons if you truly want to just bring 1 weapon around all the biomes, it'd be just a pure Lightning Weapon, or Mostly Lightning + Blunt/Fire/Frost to minimize the resist/immun. Still loved the analysis and ChatGPT integration. Would of loved to see the answers from ChatGPT to: 1) Whats the best weapon for each Biome? 2) Whats the best weapon for each Biome restricting the weapon pool to ones that can be created at that biome or under? 3) Whats the safest weapon for each Biome? "best weapon" being on average doing the most damage to all the monsters in the biome. "safest weapon" being maximize the highest "min damage on any monster in the biome". Reason for best vs safest is basically best weapon might be frost staff for a biome, where lets theoretically say it's doing x2 damage to almost all the monsters, however, there is one monster immune to frost, so staff of frost is actually doing 0dmg to that monster in the biome. Could make it a bad weapon to take unless u have a way to deal with that 1 monster. Vs best safest weapon which should let you kill all monsters in the biome.

One thing to note about the staff. Rain puts things out very quickly, this is particularly annoying in the mistlands, because the seekers burn out long before they take all of their fire dmg when it's raining. And it rains an abnormal amount in the mistlands to the point where it's irritating. I usually don't wait for them to burn up, and just pound them w/fireballs until they come apart.

Yes good effort. I feel like a better break down would be stages so basically break it down for accessible biomes... like stage 1 best weapon for meadows and bF. Then Bf, meadows, swamp. Then swamp ,bf, mountains, etc. Because I'm 100+ hours in and I could only recently make a porcupine... maybe. If I need to refine black metal then no. So early how about torch blunt and fire. Then club, axe, bow with fire arrows. And that works into the swamps. But I feel like the bow is the best weapon for the game over all. And really how often do most players take their axes along. Thanks for trying an analysis of. But I feel like IG has made it pretty hard to get a good long term weapon.

I'd definitely vote Mistwalker too. As far as I know nothing resists both pierce and slash and the sword thrust is piercing and punches right through resists from things like golems etc. It just requires a little more care to use effectively due to the wind-up time for the thrust. I'm wondering what he's found thats immune to fire in the swamp besides surtlings though? It's not leeches- I just tested that and they blow up just fine with the staff of embers, even in deep water. (with a use equipment in water mod, if that somehow makes a difference). They certainly fried fine in the shallows as they desperately tried to bite my tasty, tasty ankles jusssst out of reach on land.

Awesome and very informative video! I love the statistics breakdowns and healthy supply of informative graphs. If you ever felt the need to revisit this topic, I think it would also be important to note not just the DPS of weapon, but the risk factor involved in using it, the Stamina consumption to continually output said DPS, and how effective the weapon is against relevant monsters (for example, any creatures you find in the Meadow and Black Forest biome aside from maybe a Troll are incredibly low threat and effectiveness against those creatures should be weighted differently than say creatures that you will continually see in events in end game content, such as Fulings or Bats). Then that gives you a clear idea of what weapons are most effective in late game against creatures that necessitate effectiveness!

The most important thing is the weapon skill. I have had a server with a few friends/family on it. My hungarian friend has been renamed Legolas. I play the tank role and I managed to get block to 54. He plays ranged and he got to 100 bow skill. The short draw time for the arrows and the damage is just crazy. However not much is more rewarding than parrying a furling berserker.

This weapon combo overlaps blunt dmg and doesn't take into account enemy quantity or threat level. Once in the endgame I don't care if something is good against skeletons if it's weak against seekers. To be fair most weapons aren't going to be great against seekers though, and blunt dmg is really good in this game. Then there's weather to consider, rain makes fire worse while frost and lightning become stronger, plus frost brings utility. Early game you can't go wrong with blunt especially in the swamp. Having some kind of range is always good which is going to be bows until Mistlands. Once you're far enough in the game to use magic (which really should be unlock-able much earlier if you ask me) you should be able to make due with just about anything so long as you have a secondary weapon to cover the immunities from the first. By that point skill levels are going to matter more as well. Regardless, Carapace Buckler is the actual best weapon in the game. Parry dmg is best dmg.

Excellent video. Enjoyed the explanation and the rationale behind it. I must say there are two cases where I disagree about the porcupine. The drakes and serpent are not really melee targets. The drakes require ideal terrain around you when they attack for you to take them down with the porcupine. For the serpent you require the harpoon in order to drag the thing on land and kill it with the porcupine. The range of the staff of embers gives you would work in both cases, even though the serpent would only take the blunt damage. I understand their overall usefulness and that they sort of compliment each other, but there are factors that make such an analysis less effective. Overall excellent guide my dude.

but its not only lack of gear issue, the lack of builds in general, there are only 3 boats right now in the game and most players builded raft when they started a game just for fun, and now anyone rushes straight to the big one, even if you have enough resources its way better to farm a little and just build a way better one, there should be ships that are faster but weaker, or maybe with a lot larger storage and hp but way slower, there's a lot to improve in this game and dev are literally sleeping. i might sound like im angry towards them (even tho i kinda am) but i really wish best for this game

It's impossible to factor in every single data point of every single weapon. Not only are there too many, the effectiveness of some of them depends on the player and you can't measure the skill of every player. For example how would you measure the frost debuff? If a player is good at kiteing it's gonna be way more effective for that player than it is for one who is not. This is why we simplify things and say we are only going to look at these one or two stats we can easily measure.

Spear can also be jump thrown at bacside of soldiers after a parry while knife just gives you that closing the distance secondary attack that you can run around(knife has no movement penalty) seeker soldiers backside and secondary attack it.

Your breakdown is flawed since the damage for each weapon is not the same the difference between weapon damages from one zone to another's is significant. I mean the crossbow's damage easily out paces all the other bows by a fair amount even if you account for the ability to change out damage types for weaknesses as an example. Though I can get behind using the fire staff but not just for the good damage but because it is ranged area effect attack. Which was sorely lacking aside from the poison grenades.

It is much better to have more then 2 weapons, but so that they commit to same buffs rather then try to mix melee and magic and carry around ton of different food.
