New subscriber here. I have been buying for almost 3 years now and still have not listed the first item. Storing instead of selling has just about run me out of my house. Time to start listing! One thing I have learned before ever listing the first item is that I have made some terrible buys. I have bought many small things with the idea of doubling my money and I didn't consider fees and shipping supplies! YIKES! I did not have the necessary knowledge. Thank you for being willing to share your knowledge with others. Not sure how I will ever dig out of this hole, but it's time to start! Hopefully, my mistakes can help someone else not to make the same ones. Future buys, like you said, will be only on things that have great sell-through rate!

I’m about halfway through the video and it’s been very helpful, thank you. Question: when you’re at an estate sale or bins, or Amazon returns place where people will run you over to get to items, how do you have time to research the STR on each item? That’s been my biggest struggle (besides procrastination) and I can’t get the hang of it. I’m bordering hoarding at the moment. Starting tomorrow there will be a week-long church rummage sale where you pack your bags and give a donation. So I don’t want to be standing around taking several minutes to look up the STR on each item bc all the good stuff will be gone. You snooze, you lose.
@Robin-gf7bd9 ай бұрын
Do you do any private coaching or can I DM you to ask a few questions? Thank you.
@desertsellers9 ай бұрын
So you are spot on, snooze you lose, So what I recommend especially at a Bin's situation is grab everything into your cart pull over and research about halfway through. And then dump out the stuff that wasn't worth it and go and do another round. I will then do a final check through my cart getting rid of things that did not fit my standards. You can do sort of the same thing at an estate sale where you make sure to grab the items and then look it up at the end putting back what you don't want. But usually at a state sales things move a lot faster because you're wanting to get to another sale so I will multitask and look up items as I'm walking through the house and grabbing other items. I am working on a course to be able to offer private coaching so stay tuned ☺️

@@desertsellers The last time I was at the bins (like in 2022), a guy had just done that (going thru his finds) with a bunch of Karate type books. Well I know that market BIG TIME. I knew why he dumped $300 in profit at my feet, the books lacked something, all of them.I will not reveal what they lacked but the savvy will know. This one secret alone is a BUSINESS. The reason is most other "resellers" are lazy dopeheads. Looking for the easy fix. If it doesn't "" they pass. Most of the books I sell are ones these lazy people left behind.

Love your videos! Do you have a video on how to check items before buying them?
@desertsellers10 ай бұрын
I dont because I dont record in the bins. So before I checkout, I take the items to their testing station and plug it in. Its not flawless as sometimes it will need charged, or a usb plug I cant test. I have only lost my money on 2 maybe 3 items there and I have made way more than that in the long run. The thrifts usually test for me. Estates I can plug in if I wish, but honestly I just make sure to buy it right so if it doesnt work, I can sell for parts :) Hope this helps!
@thriftingthe3rivers6569 ай бұрын
It's easy for people that have multiple sourcing opportunities to say if your stuff isn't selling fast to source elsewhere. Some people have limited sourcing opportunities where they live. I use to do good with online auctions, not anymore. The items get bid up too high to make decent money.
@desertsellers9 ай бұрын
I understand completely but the idea of sell through rate is so important whether you buy 5 things a month or 500. Make sure the 5 you do get have amazing sell through rates. Than as your sourcing options grow you have the foundation of buying great items!!

Always buy quality. Speed is only one part of a math equation. Let the Dopamine addicts focus on turns. The real money is reselling real value. Just as crackhead strip the wire from streetlights, so do 10 dopamine heads a Thrift each day.They need their fix. Have fun trying to outrun these people.

You will definitely want to do the research. You can search for your items on eBay and filter to sold. That will tell you how much the item sells for. I usually price around that. Hope that helps.

Way more money in breaking up many small appliances. If you just focused on kitchen stuff you could make a living. If you get into commercial items like tools etc you could retire fast. Big investment but a huge Opp. Car parts same. I have literally sold access doors off trashed roadside water heaters for $20 (carry a screwdriver, 2 mins, done).. If you live in a town where you can legally dumpster dive, there is a living in doing that alone. Sadly in my town due to the Homeless issue that's a huge no-no. BUT we still can survey the bulk at the curb.

Hi Jennifer, I'm curious about your return policy. When a buyer wishes to return one of your items due to buyer's remorse, how do you personally handle the refund? Do you refund the original outbound shipping cost in addition to the item's cost, or is the refund specifically for the item's cost only?

It is definitely overwhelming when you first start out. And the FOMO is real. Focus on learning in this stage and only hitting one or two goodwills. You don't want to rush through the stores just because you feel like you have to. It's okay to slow down while you're learning.

I rarely go to Goodwill but I see the term “Goodwill bins” mentioned often. Is this a specific section of the GW store or are the items all jumbled together in a “bin”? Same question with “Amazon bins”. How do I find those?
@desertsellers9 ай бұрын
Great question. Goodwill bins are separate from Goodwill stores. They are commonly called Goodwill outlets. You should be able to Google those in your area. Amazon bins are kind of hard to spot because they always have weird names. You should be able to search for liquidation centers in your area.

Solds divided by available quantity on eBay. 5 sold last 90 days / 25 currently available = 20% STR. But know this, there are dozens of sales options (size-color-withoffers-free-shipping) which can dramatically skew these general STR calculations. Example, most shirts 2x and higher size sell 3 times the rate of L-M sizes. Meaning just buying 2x and higher shirts can triple you business if all you sell are shirts. Color is a big variant. The tech term for this sort of thing is called the vertical.
@johndough232 ай бұрын
The absolute holy grail of reselling is to always ask yourself this...WHO would buy this from me? If you are looking at a 1946 teacup from an estate donation, the odds are pretty good nobody randomly scanning rBay at 2am in their shorts would. If you can however envision (or already cater to) some Bohemian fans, then spend the $1.29. Learn about that market niche (extremely hot). Always ask yourself WHO before you ask how much. Target hungry buyers not high STR items.

This is most of us so these gloryhole tactics are not possible. Instead you must focus on areas the dopeheads running thru Thrift Stores miss. It is so bad in most Metro areas now many of the resellers you see in stores are paid scouts. The scik sck sck people in the racks. They get X$ per Ralph Lauren, Louie, or Filson. Why shop when you can simply pay somebody $10 for a $40 shirt?

How do I find ebay sell through rates you are talking about
@Annie261.9 ай бұрын
Find out how many sold in the last 90 days and divide that by the number of them currently listed then multiply by 100 for the percentage. This can also be calculated for 30 or 60 days. I usually do 90.

How do you determine " sell through rate" ?
@desertsellers9 ай бұрын
Great question. When you search for an item you will see a number of how many are available. Divide that by the number you find by going to filter and sold. That will give you the percentage of sell through rate. You want more sold than you do available.

Once you search for an item on the app it's at the very bottom it'll say how many are available. Same once you filter the sold the number is on the bottom. If you're on the computer I believe the number is on the top left to tell you how many of that search are found.

@@desertsellers So if you found say a AZ Cardinals bucket hat for $3.99 with a sell thru of 29%, you would pass? even though in a year you are almost 100% guaranteed to double your money? 29 x 4 = 116 sold. Avg price including shipping is $20 end of day say $10 profit. (this is a real life example using real numbers BTW) I'm buying the hat myself.

Honestly the only style of reselling which makes any sense to me anymore is spending weeks in an RV traveling around to the glory holes sourcing and then listing from the RV. If you stay at home the chances of finding even 5% of what you sell in my market is like finding Big Foot. Example, I have not found a sellable digital camera in at least 4 years. VCR? try a decade. It is rare to even find a remote anymore. If I find a Patagonia anything I duck because I expect the lighting-bolt to hit close any second. Reselling is no big secret. We all know what sells. The big reveal is in most markets you are never going to be able to find good items in enough consistent quantity to ever go FT. This business is no secret to half the population. If an item IS IN A THRIFT, it is high odds it is a POS. Unless your thrift is staffed by clueless morons and you sit next tot eh door where they drag the new stuff out, odds are high you are wasting your time.
