Secrets to Refilling Your Butane Lighter

In today's video, I demonstrate the proper way to refill a butane lighter.
I showcase my favorite lighter, the SD Dupont Slim 7, highlighting its compact size and convenience. This is an exceptional lighter, who's compact size makes it perfect for the Gentleman that loaths bulky items in his pocket. But the slim size also requires that the tank be fully filled in order to light as many cigars as possible!
Before refilling, it's essential to completely empty the tank by depressing the valve.
When trying to squeeze as much butane in your lighter as possible, you can also place the lighter in the freezer for 20 to 30 minutes to allow any remaining air to condense, maximizing fuel capacity. Next, when filling, make sure you use the proper butane refill, place the lighter upside down on a flat, sturdy surface, and fully depress the butane nozzle to fill. Following a simple protocol, you can enjoy a well-lit butane lighter for your cigar-smoking pleasure.

Love the channel, but never use a metal object to empty a lighter. I recommend a golf tee, maybe a wood chopstick. Basically, something that does not have the possibility of damaging the filling port.

All you do is add more butane. Push down on the inlet for a few seconds to let the air out then top off with butane. Works like a charm and fills 98% of the tank.

I also doubt the thermal expansion valving in jet lighters wants to be exposed to freezing temperatures. The man looks great in a suit, i doubt he knows much physics or can swing a hammer.

after purging the lighter, shake it to expand the remainder gas inside and purge again. you will be surprised when it whoshes again. remember gas under preassure turns to liquid, so when you shake whats left in the lighter you heat it and expand it. that's why you purge, shake, purge, shake, purge.

On the can it literally says not to shake it. You want the butane to be transferred as a liquid. The reservoir is drained to relieve pressure. You will have butane as a gas filling that volume at a lower density. Emptying it fully lets you fill with the butane as a dense fluid. More burn time.

not purging the lighter is that ruins refillable lighters. the butane comes with air to aid with preassure so if you don't purge your lighter it will start to fill with even more air and less butane. so after refilling it it will go empty super quick

​@@azteco nono. The butane gas refills are almost 100% pure butane. Adding ay oxygen rich fuel to that would be a recipe for disaster. Any air inside the tank will eventually be whisked away with the outflowing butane and pushed out by the pressure.

@@sirflamedrop6165yet if you don’t purge, you don’t have as many lights. Weird, and every cigar shop owner, cigar smoker and even butane lighter brands give these tips? To what, sell more butane? A Colibri 500ml refill tank costs 6€ and lasts a whole year and maybe even 2 if you’re a normal (1-2 a day) smoker.

You don’t have to do all this. Make sure to leak light ofc and then refill. Let your lighter sit 20 minutes before reusing. That is all and thank you.

you do understand that the butane goes in to the lighter because of the pressure of the butane in the can and not because the lighter sucks it in.....

No need to overfill it by cooling it down. It might make you lighter spit in the first moments of use. Fill it over head, pump 2-3 times. Thats it. Who cares for the 5% on top (you loose it pretty quick anymway)

i will atest to this method, my lighter has a see through chamber so if you dont empty the air first mine will fill just below half just below 2/3 if the air is let out and all way to the top if i pop it in the freezer.

By freezing the lighter, you also shrink its tank, thus the capacity isn't increased. Instead, only chill the gas.

The propellant & butane are inside the same pressurized can, of course they are going to be mixed that's how it works! I've had far superior results since I began shaking my butane..

That looks like a bottle of Colibri. You really should be using the gas St. Dupont distributes. They will not honor the warranty if you use other brands of gas.

This is all pointless. To fully refill any lighter just press the button to light it, it should be empty so no flame and keep the button pressed while you fill it, the extra gas that would stop it being filled will come out of the lighter and let butane liquid in instead.
