That was absolutely awesome Australia you should be proud of everyone involved. I remember reading everything concerning the Australian boat and the Americans Cup And I lived in New Zealand. Little did I know New Zealand was going to have a challenge in the 1987 Americas Cup with our boat kz7 and so began our involvement in the America Cup. If it weren't for the Alan Bond and the team of Australia II bringing the cup down under. New Zealand may had never got involved. Being proud of one's country can never be underestimated and felt by all.

I did like the 12m Class, probably the only metric measurement the American's have ever acknowledged and embraced

After the victory of the US Olympic hockey team in 1980 against the Soviet Union, this is arguably the greatest victory in sports history. In both cases, it wasn't just a champion was crowned or a record was set - those happen many times every year. History was also made at both events. That's what made them special.

+Dennis Nayland Smith 1. leicester city. 2. this 3. miracle on ice

NS PACKATTACK I don't know if I'd rank Leicester City as number one in this list but they deserve to be included.

this was far bigger than miracle on ice. Leicester City winning the PL and the 2013 cup are the other 2. The rules in 1983 were set against Australia II as where the miracle on ice was a single game.. Leicester though wow! Leicester for me is the greatest victory.
@georgfriedrichhandel43902 жыл бұрын
@@12from121 Yes that was a significant victory but with all due respect, that was just a game. The US Hockey gold medal and the 1983 America's Cup were historical events. Something we will most likely never see again. And that is what makes them special.

@@georgfriedrichhandel4390 OK We are talking separate issues. In terms of political impact nothing ranks with the miracle on ice. But if we are talking sheer odds then Leicester city winning the PL (38 GAMES) is the most unlikely. 1983 is very rare as well as the Americans weren't after a fair race

Denis Connor refused to attend the trophy presentation. So maybe your grandfather was right.

Not too bad an effort from the American point of view but glosses over the controversy of the 'Winged Keel' and its resolution as well as the seven races of the finals. It also doesn't show the revealing of the 'keel'. Still, a reasonable attempt. There was a miniseries made in 1986 called 'The Challenge' (starring John Wood as Alan Bond and Nicholas Hammond as Dennis Connor) which also covered this event.

They changed the rules many times over the years to prevent losing the cup. Sportsmanship is not in the US vocabulary.

If you read John Bertram's book the advantage of the winged keel was mostly phycological. It was never universally adopted.
