Precisely. All the more reason I feel all this dissing of Blackbeard is unwarranted. Sure, his cowardice is a bit of a character stain, but everyone has flaws, so it helps him be a memorable, believable character. He's not just some cliche villain. I do agree that all the signs point to Blackbeard being THE ultimate threat of the series- even Oda's use of his namesake. I personally love Blackbeard as a character, and I can't wait to see what he's been up to over the past 2 years.

Yes, though forshadowing states that blackbeard was monstrous before he ate a devil fruit, jinbe states at one point that Teach has always been widely respected and feared even as young guy on whitebeard's ship the fact he was the first choice over ace to be a commander without a devil fruit puts him in league with marco and jozu (again still no DF at this point) a proper backstory will hint at this and like Akainu I reckon he has become far stronger now than all those years ago.

Shanks could have defeat that monster easily with haki (that's actually what he does just after that), but I guess he has his reasons, as well as letting Blackbeard putting a scar on him :p
