The fact that Section 80 is ignored to the extent that it is, for one given how good it is is crazy, But for two, the fact that Kendrick's discography is so great that you could ignore Section 80 is even more wild.
@EyesDontCry3 жыл бұрын
It's true GKMC was so great that people could easily see how great he truly is, AND THEN TPAB came and just blew everything out of the water, DAMN is just so good, and what really got him into the tippy top of mainstream, with tracks like DNA and HUMBLE. And I think with that more new people got to see kendrick and maybe dismissed section. 80 as the inferior GKMC, but they are truly different albums, and personally I think GKMC is the better album by in large, but section. 80 shouldn't be ignored because it doesn't necessarily live up to that. But section. 80 has some of my favourite kendrick tracks (obviously rigamortus, hol up, ADHD, hiipower, fuck your ethnicity) it may not be as conceptually "whole" with a clear story but it displayed his master work from a debut album like no other artist (there is obviously others that have great debuts, but to have a great debut and then continue to improve from that SO significantly TWICE is just crazy, going onto make the greatest hip hop album of the decade is just crazy) I think section. 80 is just a testiment to how great kendrick was going to be and deserves more attention for that.

I think the way Kendrick's sureity has diminished is literally proof of what Pac said on Mortal Man. "In this country, a black man has only 4 or 5 years where he can exhibit maximum strength" Or as j Cole spit on heaven's ep "Or has the money watered me down, that truth is hard for me" Kendrick simply matured and felt more and more emotionally overwhelmed and broken as the weight of the issues he was rapping about and hoping to enact a change in Actually hit him. He was a young man, screaming his opinions, voicing a generation and throwing three fingers in the air, and demanding hii power of the youth around him. But as the years went by, Kendrick becomes more personal and introspective, he sees these issues from his own perspective and paints them with a brush dipped in his own pain and sorrow. His survivors guilt, his disconnect from Compton, his humanity and the expectations on him and how they juxtapose with systemic racism and oppression. He realises how futile and stupid America is, that he dared to lend a hand and it shot him in the gut for it and failed to understand the pain of the streets that he tried to spit in his bars. "I see a woman, a blind woman......hello ma'am, can i be of any assistance?it seems to me that you have lost something. ....you have lost.....your life" *gunshot* I don't think Kendrick Is defeated or less boisterous, this would have led him to adopt more moderate stances and dilute his views. He simply stands for the same ideals but his overwhelmed with how to express them. At the same time he no longer wants to only talk about the system and dehumanise his homies back in the hood.

I agree to a large extent. However, and this is speaking as a dude FROM the ghetto and tasting extreme poverty my whole life and seeing racial injustice firsthand and making it a subject I’ve studied for years: I think that, while to a large extent he is a radical, politically he is essentially a centrist. He is anti-social conservatism to the extreme, but whether because of religion or simply not reading into things like the fact that every black panther, Malcolm X, MLK, etc. were hardcore socialist/anti-capitalists who understood racism and capitalism were invariably interwoven and always will be, he seems to believe that Obama is a prophet: a man who didn’t help minorities worth a shit, and barely helped the poor AT ALL and gave tax cuts like crazy and helped corporations continue destroying labor rights, and deported even more immigrants than TRUMPS admin. Because states were REPULSED at Obama’s policies and refused to allow something like those again, like… Basically his viewing Obama as a prophet and not ever including a MATERIAL analysis of the situation means him not understanding systemic racism in any way other than personal experience which is valid, but him basically thinking its just GOD CURSING the black community is absurd and harmful as a message, and him not understanding economic imperialism on black people and how much they’ve been left out of things even post civil rights bill, makes him just a fantastic poet with incredible rhymes and flow, who can name a lot of problems, but has no real understanding on how to FIX them POLITICALLY. But for what he is: He’s one of the geniuses of his generation and his music itself is second to very few. I criticize him as one of my favorite artists of all time.

But it is quite true, he has failed to look at Obama's character and actual impact beyond as a black person and representative

Looked this point. Well said. And lots of parallels revolving around power. Him (God / abuser), imperfections (natural insecurities / literal bruises), blessings (accepting yourself as you are / equating abuse with love i.e. blessings, though since it’s only used in the first verse, maybe this one’s a bit of a stretch). So him asking for no makeup becomes a cruel request, like he wants to admire his work. The song would definitely feel empty without that underlying story.

@@fort809 Preference in art is subjective, but there are measurable qualities that one could tally up to compare two similar artists objectively. Art can be judged objectively if you have a criteria. If not, you’re just going off of subjective favorites, but art criticism requires a modicum of objectivity.

It has its imperfections, but that’s what part of what makes it appealing for me. That feeling’s intensified after seeing him grow, it’s not my favorite but it makes me nostalgic for when it dropped. The hook on No Make-Up sucks though.

It doesn't just hold up for me, I think it's another one of Kenny's Classic Masterpieces. Tracks like (F*ck Your Ethnicity, Hol' Up, Ronald Reagan Era, Poe Man's Dreams, Rigamortis and HiiPower) are legit perfect, IMO. The least I could give this album is 9/10. I love every track, but S80 isn't on the same level as GKMC or TPAB.

This is easily my favorite Kendrick album. I know that blows a lot of people's minds but the vibe of the album is the most consistent, he had a vision for the album that worked in better unision then his other albums, it feels like one long ass song compared to his other albums. That is just my personal opinion, after going back and listening to his discography after the whole Drake and Kendrick 2024 Beef.

Keisha's song and no makeup are still so good. I remember I cried the first time I heard Keisha's song. It sounds silly but I didn't listen to section 80 when it first came out but I DID listen gkmc and tpab when they first came out, and when I went back and heard section 80, that's when I knew Kendrick is the best rapper of the modern era, section 80 is my favorite Kendrick album, maybe bc I'm only 21 and that's around kendricks age when he wrote section 80. Gotta love Kendrick. He's in my top 5 all time, maybe even top 3

i didn't get into kendrick until late 2015/2016, at that point tpab was a bit too daunting an album to appreciate as my intro and i didn't fully vibe with GKMC initially but using s80 really helped set the stage for kendrick and further get into the rest of his music.

First album I ever bought was Good Kid MAAD City. To Pimp A Butterfly is the best first listen I’ve ever had of an album. Somehow though, Section 80 is my favorite Kendrick album and top 5 of all time for me. He was so hungry, so wise, and most of all he was so tired. I felt like he gave the last bit of life force he had built up into this album and if it would’ve gotten no attention or success, who knows if Kendrick would’ve kept trying. This album is a masterpiece. “Keisha’s Song” and “Hiiipower” are the pinnacle of art through language. I think that’s why the art is dying. We truly reached the peak of what it could become and now, just like any genre before it, we are on the end path to the next big movement. The 30s are gonna be polarizing for music.
