The biquad is my favourite of all the directional 2.4GHz antennas so you can be sure it is on the list!

Very nice project. Easy to understand and looks easy to build.

Amazing build! Thank you! Will be trying this maybe this week as I am in need of a couple link antennas for our boat club. I was wondering how you were going to match the 1/2 wave section to 50 ohms. I am still trying to figure that one out. I know how a J pole antenna matching system works and this is something like that. The old Zep antenna. Oh and for us Americans I get 1.018 inches for a 1/2 wave for 5GHz and .509 inches for a 1/4 wave using your measurements. Using 468/Freq MHz= length in Feet I get .09Ft or 1.08 inches for a half wave at 5GHz and half that for a 1/4 wave. So the to be real close is hard at that frequency band unless we use something electronic to measure that length. Now looking at the FCC as per the exact frequencies they range here in the states from 5.250GHz- 5.350GHz and from 5.470GHz- 5.725GHz. Now I know not to cut an antenna for the higher frequencies. It is better to long than to short. So figuring 5.250GHz I get .0891feet or 1.0692 inches. for a half wave and 1/2 that for a 1/4 wave. Now actually measuring this in real life as per making this antenna is going to be really something. LOL :) So your measurements are for slightly above 5GHz and by the time I bend it and do all my Jimmy stuff to it lets just hope it's close. Hehe.. :) Have you tried changing the feed point to ground length and seeing if it gets a better match? I know on many antennas like this they simply start out the feed point near the ground foil then taper it away from it to change the feed point impedance. And I am wondering about you putting the 1/4w loop sections near the reflector as per away from it or the same distance as the 1/2w sections from the reflector. Is that part of your matching idea to match the high impedance of the 1/2w section? I was told the bullet 5GHz unit I have is 5 watts, which I do not believe. But at that I still will be wondering how much of the heat on it will be SWR since I can't measure that with what I have. I was thinking about reading the current it takes to drive the unit while it is hooked to a 50 ohm load then hook it to my DIY antenna to give me some indication of good or bad for the unit. Also measuring the heat with my laser temperature gun of my WIFI 5GHz unit on a dummy load antenna and on the sector DIY antenna. Along with some signal strength readings from a fixed access point down the street at nearly the same time of day on several antennas. I have built collinear antennas for many frequency bands even shortwave bands but never for microwave! Thanks again for your video it put things into motion here and I'll be trying this design. 73 Jimmy, WX9DX

I have some commercial sector antennas for 800, 900, 1800, 1900, 2200 and 2400 MHz i got from a cellular phone company 3 years ago. They are 24 vdc powered through the coax with an injector and are somewhat large in size but work very very good

This math conversion will allow you to modify ANY antenna to suit your needs. This formula will give you a "Scaling Factor" with which to multiply and result in the required size for the required frequency. In this case the starting frequency to change from is 5Ghz or 5000 Mhz. The formula is "Scale Factor = Starting Frequency / Required Frequency" . You wanted to have a version of this antenna for 2.4 Ghz or 2400 Mhz. Plugging in the numbers the formula looks like this: SF = 5000 Mhz / 2400 Mhz, SF = 2.08 Now with the Scale Factor of 2.08 multiply all of the measurements in the video by 2.08. This will result in a finished antenna cut for 2.4 GHZ. This can even be used for any other antenna's frequency. Remember the lower the frequency the longer the wavelength and the BIGGER the antenna. Using the measurements from the description: 5Ghz Antenna 2.4Ghz Antenna ¼ wave 12.93mm 1/4 wave 26.9375mm ½ wave 25.86mm 1/2 wave 53.875mm Back Reflector 35mm by 240mm Back Reflector 72.91mm x 500mm I hope this is of help for you good luck on your project.

@@1foxtrot70 great explanation. can we calculate wire diameter, distance from back reflector?
@michaelschmidt7014
@michaelschmidt7014 6 жыл бұрын
@ Md. Khairul Hasan - At 10.57 in the video WX9DX is using 1/4 wave of 5ghz which is 12.93 mm for spacing from the reflector plane. For 2.4ghz you would use the previously calculated scale factor 2.08 x 12.93 mm = 26.89 mm, 26.89 mm is then the spacing from the reflector plane. As to the wire size WX9DX states that he is using 8 guage wire for the antenna at 5ghz which is 0.128 inches or 3.26 mm. For 2.4ghz again you would use the previously calculated scale factor 2.08 x 0.128 inches or 3.26 mm = 0.258 inches or 6.54 mm which on the wire gauge charts works out to be 2 gauge wire. Keep in mind the 2 gauge wire will be nearly 4 times thicker than the 8 gauge wire as such the wire will be harder to bend. For every 3 wire gauge sizes + or - the wire physically doubles or reduces in size diameter. Good luck on your project I hope this information is of benefit to you.

@benwolters
@benwolters 10 жыл бұрын
To Andrew, great job of illustrating the franklin antenna! Lo Vaz; Omni and Sector, really? Sector means take the ERP (radiated powered) and aim it (focus) in a narrow direction, effectively increasing gain in that focus corridor (typically 90 or 120 degree) but sacrifice coverage in the remaining area. thus long distance coverage. Omni pattern must spread all power over a 360 degrees and thus shorter range. You could feed three sectors with different radios on different frequencies, but you would also need to isolate the sectors from their neighbour to avoid cross talk and keep the floor noise level respectable.
