"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

He's saying they're worse than people that tortured, killed, and starved millions including children in unimaginably inhumane conditions, largely on the basis of race and white supremacy. The strict carnivore diet is one of the least crazy things about Peterson. I don't think I would try it for myself, but I know people who have and they generally report feeling great. It is something to approach cautiously since the goal is to fundamentally change your gut biome and metabolism. You can make yourself very sick if you don't give your body time to adjust to a massive diet change, but beyond that most people can make the change if they wanted. I would think that you could probably get most of the same results from a strict keto-diet.

For those who don't recognize the reference, it's about Magnus Hershfeld who founded the Institute of Sexology. One of, if not the first, medical and social organization to ethically and empathetically explore LGBTQ issues. They did a lot of really great work through the late 20's and early 30's. For obvious reasons it was targeted by the Nazis resulting in a raid that lead to likely at least one death and many "disappearances." The images that are so famous as the first major book burning took place in the square outside the Institute and was largely the Institute's library and medical files. The loss of knowledge haunts the trans community to this day.

I remember hearing about transsexuals as a kid and never getting an explanation on the nature of their existence and plight whereas explanations for other stuff was forthcoming. It’s a weird issue honestly. I do some anxiety about irreversible surgeries on kids, and puberty blockers. Again we’re talking about such a tiny % of the population that I can dismiss this as basically a distraction from the greed and corruption induced decline of our nation and world.

​@@placebojesus5652Medical and psychological issues relating to youth concern people for understandable reasons. My recommendation would be to seek out solid sources of information. And remember that these are medical decisions happening. For minors, any medical intervention requires the informed consent of the youth and their guardian(s), sign off and oversight by a psychologist or psychiatrist, ongoing involvement of an endocrinologist with expertise in this area and a general practitioner who knows the youth and family. This kind of treatment isn't a 15 minute appointment with an overworked GP in a walk in clinic. This is usually a years long process with an actual team of medical professionals. Try to think of _any_ youth medical process that requires this level of consent and oversight. I don't think it exists. Trust doctors, families, and youth to make their own medical decisions, the same as you would for any other issue.

I can remember at 6 years old going to sleep wishing I'd wake up as a girl. I repressed those feelings for nearly 30 years. For most of my life I was depressed and would think "if/when things get bad enough, I'll just end it." I finally admitted to myself I was trans in my mid 30s and imagined coming out and transitioning. Suddenly, my problems felt worth solving because I could imagine a life I WANTED to live. I'm 12 days from my 40th birthday, and for the first time in my life, I'm genuinely happy. It hurts so much to see the hate from the Right. They quite simply don't know what they're talking about and how incredibly important it is for us (trans people) to be true to ourselves, live authentically, and be accepted.

Wow! I have a very similar experience actually. I drank to excess in my 20s trying to suppress my feelings. Finally admitted to myself who I was 4 years ago. I’ll be 40 next week and am just getting going with therapy and hoping to start HRT next year! It’s always comforting hearing about others with similar stories. I’m so happy for you and proud of you! Have a very similar story as a trans man. I told people I was a boy already from age 4, but met nothing but disapproval from adults. Tried to suppress myself for 15 years after that, all my childhood and teens. In my teens I cried myself to sleep almost every night wishing I could just wake up as a boy and feel at ease finally. I figured I’d probably either die or totally seclude myself forever somewhere in my twenties, because I couldn’t imagine living with the body I was steadily developing. It felt completely alien and violating. Like a poison or cancer slowly making my body unusable and bizzare to me. When I found out you could in fact transition, I was terrified of the shame that would involve, and thought I could never access it, but instantly knew that was what I needed. My mom eventually understood I was trans (it was extremely obvious) and said she would help me transition if that was what I wanted. I cried of relief. Today I’m a happy, thriving and comfortable man. I experienced love for the first time two years ago, I was intimate with her and it was ALL I ever dreamed of. I am finally comfortable, my life feels possible, I don’t even have depression anymore. I’ve experienced joy I wasn’t even aware was possible. Every single day I’m grateful for my life now, even as I have normal life struggles. It’s been 4 years since my last surgery. I remember crying in hospital bed of relief and finally thinking «now I can finally live». And that’s exactly what I’ve done. Trans care works. That’s why it’s done. We are a small minority who just want to be left alone and for our doctors to just help us based on the medical knowledge established about our care. Every surgery I had, and hormones, has permanently elevated my quality of life from being suicidal misery to comfortable, optimistic, happy and thriving.

Trans healthcare saved my life. I remember, as a guy, just staring out the window at my job thinking: 'I no longer want to live, because my body... who I am... is fundamentally wrong, and I'd rather just not suffer anymore.' I gave myself one last chance to just try out HRT and transition, with no expectation of it working, because if it didn't I'd at least be allowed to go. But, it worked. It did way more than many people first think. Yes, I was happy with the bodily changes, and that helped, but so many people gloss over just... how much more normal, and healthy my brain just... feels on the right hormones. I wish people like rogan would get that. It's MEDICINE. it literally fixed whatever my brain was constantly screaming about, and I feel like a complete person now, not a shell. My transition is still ongoing. I'd like to get bottom surgery, but I would never detransition, even though a lot of people in my life would like me to. I refuse to be unhappy for their preference.

No one’s pushing breast enlargement as a moral imperative and the long term effects of breast enlargement are well known (you need to get your implants replaced regularly or they might kill you). The long term effects of puberty blockers aren’t as well known but they include either imparement of bone calcification or the decalcification of bones, some of the kids who were put on puberty blockers have lost all their teeth in their 20s because their jaws decalcified. And people are pushing them as some sort of moral imperative, even though for centuries trans kids have been growing up with no access to puberty blockers and manage just fine.

Usually it’s the adults in their life pushing it, for example if you’ve got a boy who likes stereotypically feminine things and their parents won’t let them do them because they’re afraid it will make their son gay they may present an ultimatum where the only way the kid is allowed to play with the toys they like or wear the clothes they like is by identifying as trans. The fact that several of the prominent trans kid parents have been caught on record saying they were afraid they had a gay kid until the kid turned trans says a lot. Beyond that it depends on the social group. Some online social groups are really into alternative gender identities because it makes them feel free. You’ve got this fact, you’re male or female, and you can’t change that but but them saying they can identify as something else gives them the illusion of freedom, even if it’s really stupid and ultimately pointless. Anyway these groups can bully you if you’re one of the cis children so children in these social groups start to identify as trans or non-binary because it lets them fit in.

I realized I was trans in 2015 but didn't get a gender dysphoria diagnosis until 2021. It took almost a year to get hormones after that. By this point, I was in my early 20s. Many of us don't medically transition until we're adults because our parents either don't take us seriously or would kick us out. Also getting trans healthcare before age 18 is super difficult because you need to be seen by many specialists over the course of several years and have approval from family on top of said specialists. Very few of the trans people I know started hormones before 18. I don't know if any got surgeries before 18. Maybe one? And this is liberal areas of Washington which is why there's any trans kids getting any healthcare at all. None of the people I know detransitioned, in fact many feel like their childhood and teen years were taken by not living authentically earlier. I share their sentiment.

What amazes me is how they treat this subject as if there were a group of doctors who want to change genders on a whim. I mean, don´t they realize the amount of careful and thorough research that is behind any medical procedure?

There are detransitioners who have said they went into planned parenthood, said they were trans and gotten a prescription for hormones after a small evaluation that amounted to a psychiatrist just asking them if they were trans. So no, there’s no long evaluation process. There used to be, but activists removed that because they felt it was cruel to force trans people to undergo evaluations about their identity. Also the careful and thorough research is funded by the companies making puberty blockers, of course it’s going to find them safe and effective every medical company buys research showing their product is safe and effective. Do you know how many drugs have been recalled that were initially OK’d because all the research showed they were safe and effective?

Its not that researched. People read and listen to detrans people. Many are left with complications. Even those that affirmed are the chose their gender, the medical side of it is hard and surgery is not anywhere near where it should be. You are mutilated and lose function

@@cathygrandstaff1957 Yes, there are detransioners, each one of them a very sad story, but they are 1-2% of all cases. This means that in 98% of cases, people´s lives are improved. And BTW, the pharmetheuticals behind puberty blockers are AbbVie and AstraZeneca. For these huge companies gender disphoria is a a very niche, small use case. Moreover the same drugs are actually also used for prostate cancer and CPP, much bigger markets.

As a "social conservative" and "Muslim," I find it hard really care when there are more important things to think about. Poverty, homelessness, joblessness, imperialism, corporate tyranny, etc. Social issues are secondary to class issues. @@themessiah5950 I don't defend them. I just dislike that people will fight over this but pay no mind to things of far greater importance. I am Muslim, but I'm not fully read with the Quran (read at least one English translation which sucked so I'm reading another) or Hadith but declared my shahada. I also am socially conservative. I just don't like labels. Also, in terms of practice I do not pray 5x a day in ritual format. Found no evidence for this in the Quran and upon looking into things found strong evidence for 2x a day. I do pray at least twice, Dawn/dusk and usually mid-day as well. I eat halal, do not drink, but I do listen to music without glorification of things that are Haram mostly instrumental music. I'm not perfect. And unless I fully embody something, I put the quotes. Use the same when I call myself a "communist." Also, my economic beliefs aren't much in line with conservatism.

A lot of young men discovered him when they were in that awkward hormonal phase growing up - Couldn't get a girlfrield, forever arguing with parents, questioning who they were, wondering why life seemed all so unfair to them and their struggle. Then here's this Jordan Peterson guy giving lectures online, coming in and telling them "Hey, it's not your fault. You're the ones who have been let down! If you study them, you realise women are naturally evil and need to be kept in their place. The world has abandoned its conservative Christian heritage, which made society grow weak, betraying the needs of men like you!" All complete and utter bollocks, but when someone's 14 or 15 this all sounds profound and life affirming. So Peterson gathered an army of young male acolytes whose life he supposedly "saved" by providing them with the red pills to see the truth. Thing is those kids are all now moving into their 30s and have families of their own, or long ago realised Peterson was a fruitcake. He's just some pathetic old relic from an alt-right yesteryear. Andrew Tate has done much the same thing for another generation. But at least Jordan Peterson isn't a sociopathic rap!st and human trafficker.

It's a ridiculous notion to say being gay or trans is a trend. I'm gay and my attempt to try to be straight only proved to me that I was actually gay. The only peer pressure I was getting was from my straight family and friends to be straight. But I just don't have the connection or attraction to women like I do with men.
